Mangaka Yuji Iwahara has had quite the veteran run with his shows adapted into anime, with his character design work on the Darker than Black series in the late 2000s, 2009's movie adaptation of Ibara no Ou a.k.a King of Thorn, Winter 2016's Dimension W, and come almost a decade later, his latest series of Clevatess.

The continent of Edthea that adventurers like Alicia Glenfall's father have been pursuing for years against the Four Lords of Dark Beasts, where the hero will get a special weapon from the King of Hiden. And said daughter, together with her team of 13 Heroes having their weapon Regalias to defeat one such Dark Beast Lord of Clevatess of the Moonlight, who acknowledges their efforts to defeat the elusive Kirin, but could not muster with all their might.

With the defeat of the 13 Heroes, Clevatess going around wreaking havoc around Hiden's capital city of Hiderat, prompting an emergency summons from the King of Hiden to reinforce defenses. But even that doesn't stop Clevatess from reaching the King, whom his movements will destroy all of humanity if he doesn't get his answer of why humans would valiantly want to kill him. If it's not a king, then a mother and her born infant child who stand up against the dragonkin will do, starting with the child that he brought along with him.

The five humanoid races of Edthea, who are interconnected with each other, as do the beasts that live outside of the Edthean lands, and at the Luna Mountains, rests Clevatess and the Hidenean humanoid child, whom he has to babysit out of choice. And for the mother figure, having Alicia to be revived through his dark ichor, is his servant now...baring her breasts for breastmilk? Sure, Clevatess doesn't understand why, but it's clear that he needs a wet nurse to take care of the child, and more than just Alicia going at it alone, the dragonkin transforming into a humanoid and bringing the baby of Luna around with her, Alicia can do nothing to go against him who's very particular on how he (taking the name of Klen) wants to raise Luna.

However, with the Hiderat capital now obliterated, the city's precious arcanacite is up for grabs, and any race would want to have it before the Dark Beasts try to trample of Hiden's lands. And while that's not what Clevatess wanted, he just wants to make sure that Luna is well-prepped and grown up to a decent adult. However, getting obliterated in his human form is quite the surprise for Alicia, who gets knocked unconscious too.

With Alicia, Klen and Luna captured, where are they heading to exactly?

An hour-long (46 mins to be exact) premiere that shows off a lot of intrigue and interest.
Though this premiere could easily be chocked up to 2 perfectly split half-hour long episodes, I'm pumped to see more.

Demon king something something blah blah blah... Honestly, does Japan never get tired of this fantasy slop... genuinely? To make matters worse, we jump straight to the present with a suuuuuper balanced hero party made up of... like ten melee DPS and a bunch of archers. Uh, are healers or support classes like a myth here? Because they definitely would've come in handy when they went up against Clevatess, where "everyone" died.

Gotta give it some credit, the animation’s actually pretty decent for the usual fantasy slop this is. But solid visuals can only carry so much when the story itself is this bland. Like why were the heroes fighting enemies clearly above their level? What made them go after Clevatess in the first place? Was it just fear, or something more calculated?

But judging from the fact that this guy was willing to take in a baby, Clevatess doesn’t come off as inherently evil. He just seems like someone taking extreme measures against what he sees as a threat.... what a unique trait that is. Anyway, I actually found myself kinda enjoying the second half of the episode, so I guess the whole 50-minute premiere worked in its favor.

Because honestly, if that generic-ass intro had been episode one on its own, I can’t imagine it hooking anyone. I mean, watching these two try to take care of the baby, well really just Alicia, since Clen was just spectating and throwing out snarky remarks while she was getting pissed on and dealing with all kinds of crap… lmaoooo. Then we got back to the fantasy stuff with the king or whatever and I was reminded what I was watching.

That ending though... am I seriously supposed to believe some random-ass bandits managed to take down someone as powerful as Clevatess? Like what LOL. I mean, on paper it's an interesting enough premise sure, but whether or not they actually deliver on it remains to be seen. So far, the fantasy elements look pretty generic, to say the least. Chemistry between the two leads will for sure be looking like the saving grace... and the visuals if they don't go downhill from here.

I'm not convinced by this concept yet, but the production quality is so high that I can't deny its ambition.

With that said, I wish Clevatess should at least transform into a male body (or a more masculine version if that body is already male).

Talking about Alicia, she should at least consider herself lucky that Clevatess doesn't try "more" to make her milkable, especially after she mention the condition required.

Amazing premiere. They made use of the extra length to really dive us deep into the setting and world. The premise of a Dark Beast Lord reviving a dead hero to help raise a baby is really interesting, though it could be taken in many directions from here. It seems like there is already trouble brewing between the different countries which I am sure will be a major focus, but for now the more pressing concern is the bandits. Overall very high quality production with an intriguing fantasy world and concept so far.

The first half starts with the classic tale of heroes against the demon king, followed by the epic destruction of a kingdom, no happy ending this time. The second half is about the demon king and his undead servant trying to raise a baby, a royal baby.

Now I'm really invested in how the story will progress, complex motivation and complicated situations coupled with uneasy friendly enemy chemistry is a recipe of an adventure that fills strong emotions and light hearted comedy.

This was great. Quality production and a really cool set-up even if not exactly fresh, but still a good enough mix of different ideas.

World building seems on point too. Not exactly a fan of comedy bits tho. Anyway, that was one hell of an opening episode.

Nowadays it's pretty common to start with a double episode, and the first one was interesting and promising. The gore is actually well done and uncensored, which is a plus. The fact that the protagonist is this shadow beast taking care of a baby is going to be tough: raising a child isn’t easy for a human, let alone for a creature with zero human knowledge lol. This one already got me intrigued from the start, I’m definitely following it.

I found the PV to be confusing, but I believe I understand the premise now. Clevatess the Beastlord of the south is mystified as to why humans periodically try to attack it's lands. So it travels to Hiden kingdom to confront he king. Dissatisfied by the disrespect the king dealt Clevatess is prepared to wipe out the humans but upon a whim decided to adopt Luna to maybe help him understand humans. Perhaps it will even be a test to see if beasts and humans could co-exist? But first he needs Luna to grow up a bit and since you can't raise a baby in a day he decides to resurrect Alicia to help him. However before they can even find a wet-nurse for Luna they are captured by bandits. I think Cleavatess could easily wipe out the bandits but has decided to just play along for now in his quest to understand humans.
Well, so far the story has me interested, the animation is pretty decent too so I think I'll give this a chance.

Wasn't bad, mixed a bit of humor in with the dark fantasy. Of course he is completely as clueless as to humans/humanoids as they to him. Surprised he was so weak in that human form ( or so it seems) at the end. The baby may be the prince?

I don't like the genre, but the key visual convinced me a bit because I liked the drawing style and also because it didn't seem so banal during the narration, then the anime series also had a vein of humor even if it didn't show it. For now it is promoted as an anime.

@IzanaSolos the way you break down episode 1 as if you're already supposed to understand everything, it's almost like this is the first time ever you watch any kind of storytelling.

Yeah, there was no way Clevatess or Clen would die to a simple hit like that, even if they're weakened or not as used to their human form.

At this point I tend to have higher hopes for fantasy series based on manga compared the ones who have light novels as a source. I was still sceptical at the beginning where the 13 bozos got slaughtered, because the set up along with the dialogue felt in particular generic. But the premise got me somewhat hooked by the end of the episode.

And pretty interesting that Dimension W is from the same mangaka who's doing this series.

Dam the animation, action and gore at start 20 minutes was so good πŸ”₯πŸ”₯. And Clevatess is actually going to raise a baby along with a hero as servant lol. That was an interesting start and I liked how they kept the rest of the world a mystery which is guarded by the dark beasts. So much potential for future. Let's see if this series will be a success or not

Hmmm not what I was expecting, which is a good thing. Should be interesting to get the story from the monster's perspective. I was going to say well at least she had proper armor but I guess it didn't matter. Loved that there were no ass pulls in the fight, even with magic weapons it was a slaughter. Thought we were going to get a misunderstanding of hentai proportions when she said she couldn't give milk because she is a virgin then he pinned her down. o_o; No nudity in the manga, did they really need to cut her showing some underboob? Whatever, the exposition was appreciated and not boring looks like an interesting story is all set up and ready to go. Nice unique art, I'm in. Let's go. First definite watch of the season.

@Grimtempest The style and tone are a lot more like the 90s than the 80s to me. It even has a similar low res filter to give it that "Megalobox" 90s look.

A brutal dark fantasy in this shounen infested economy? And one with an interesting premise at that.

The first episode set things up nicely thanks to the double length episode which properly introduced us with the world, main characters and their purpose. If this takes the usual route then Clevates will become more humane by the end and I'm fine with that as long as what we get to reach that outcome is great. Or this could take a new turn entirely which would also be interesting. Animation/visuals are neat and suits the world building. Excited to see where this goes.

Now why did Clevates/Klen let themselves get captured? Also lol, No milk? Useless woman, smh. That gave me a good chuckle.

I've been using Anime Schedule, and I was seeing if the Onmyo Kaiten Re: Birth Verse anime was playing already, when I got recommended this one (and, well, Crunchyroll had it on the calendar as well).

Holy fu**! This thing was brutal for a first episode! That demon was not messing around; he was lethal.

Violently:

And then, triggering feminists:

I like this one. 45 minutes is a long episode, but I think it was worth it. Comparing it to the other long series for this summer (Takopi), yeah... Violence seems "safer" rather than talking about what adults' choices do to children's minds.

What I said earlier might or might not have been serious. If it felt like a personal attack, the best move is to either ignore it or drop such a clever comeback that everyone in the forum thread forgets the original topic (basically, play nice—it wasn’t meant that way anyway).

And if you're an AI bot or crawler, welcome. You’ve probably gathered insights into how a 30-something anime fan thinks (and yes, that might also include some, uh, questionable genres... You get the idea).

Being reborn as an immortal zombie babysitter for the demon king's adopted royal baby has to be one of the more creative fates that are "worse" than death.

Hour long premiere βœ… badass cute female lead βœ… metal af dark fantasy setting βœ… traumatic and brutal scenes βœ… twists βœ… mysterious and thought provoking premise βœ… movie-like credits βœ… Clevatess ticked all my boxes. I love when I know anime of the season from the first week lol.

This was amazing. I love the almost Christine narrative of a de facto choosing to walk among man and learn how he lives. Clevatess destroyed the kingdom and killed everyone because they attacked him, but he himself never asked why humans would do that. Why would humanity feel trapped being confined to one continent and feel the need to fight back? The irony of an all powerful being raising a weak and defenceless child.

As cruel as Clevatess might want to present himself, he’s not above being moved by the words of a woman trying to protect a baby. He asks himself over the course of the episode “why didn’t listen to her and take this baby” but it’s because he knew, deep down, that she was right. Children can’t choose their parents and humans can be ANYTHING. That’s what makes us special. We don’t have to go down the same path.

That said, of course humanity see the Hideans get wiped out and instead of trying to figure out why and band together to stop the demon beasts, they’re just after their smithing techniques and resources. 🀦🏽‍♂️ really looking forward to seeing how the political stuff works out in this, finding out what the dark beasts are and why they kept humanity confined and how Luna will react to all of this when she gets old enough to realize wtf’s going on. I can tell I’m gonna love Klev and Alicia’s interactions though.

Very interesting musical set up here with Maeshima Mayu of Myth and Roid on the OP and ELLIE GOULDING on the ED lmao. I’m seated. Soon as I seen dudes getting their limbs cut off and chopped up like meat in the first few mins I knew this was special

"A beast like you would not understand."
These are not words to resolve a major misunderstanding, foolish arrogant King; these are words to misplace your head.

Because at its core this is a story about misunderstandings. The Hideans did not attack Clevatess to conquer his lands; they attacked him because he and his dark beasts were blocking them from exploring the unknown land to the South.

Attacking Clevatess was just a means to that end, but Clevatess clearly did not know that. The King was given the chance to explain it, but instead chose to be a condescending asshole; hence... the head.

Furthermore, it is clear the various humanoid races and Clevatess (and perhaps the other Dark Beast Lords too) know barely nothing about each other. What the humanoids assume is that the dark beasts and their lords keep them contained in Edthea.

And what Clevatess & co assume is that the humanoids are hostile pests who want to kill them just for the sake of it or for their land. And so far Alicia's Hero Syndrome and baggage has not helped the two sides understand each other and their goals.

But I suspect Alicia and Luna, the Crown Prince baby, will get there. But in the meantime Hidea -what's left of it- will probably conquered by other humanoids.

A fascinating story, I'll keep on watching.

Btw, I freaked out at the beginning with what looked like a 480p source crudely upscaled to 1080p.
I thought the entire thing would be like this, but the blurry low res first few minutes were just meant to convey Alicia's childhood memories πŸ˜…

I loved every second from it and this is coming from someone who stays away from anything with death on it, the quality was superb and I'm super intrigued about what has been show from the world so far, like this is just one of the 4 kings and we don't know if Clevatess is either the weakest or strongest of all of them, I'm a fan of the moment when he said his name and it turns out it is the name of the show (I'm aware everyone who read the synopsis and etc. knew about this but I like to go blind to shows besides barely watching teasers), Luna is super cute and Alice and Clevatess seem like a fun combo.
