I offer you half a million per year to work on a potato farm out in the sticks with no internet/cellphone reception, do you accept?

For the purpose of this thread, I am now the new happy owner of potato farm really far back in the countryside, and I need a few workers. But I don't want to be the kind of boss that exploit their employees too much so I'm going to be real generous with the salary: 500k USD for a full year of work. This won't be easy though; there will be a lot of manual labor. Gotta work hard so that people can damage their health with chips and french fries. At least 60 hours a week! That's how it works with farm work! And don't forget that you have no access to the internet and can't get any reception with your phone (but I'm willing to let you use the landline if you ask nicely). So how do you feel about this work opportunity? Would you still do it or do you disapprove of it so much that you fell like getting me Luigi'd?

So long as it's location isn't too far and certainly not in Wales then possibly.

Doesn't sound that hard, if I work a few years then I can almost guarantee myself being set for life.
I worked in the forestry before and I pretty much lived in the middle of nowhere, wouldn't be my first time without internet or any reception at all.

Here's my counteroffer: 40 hours a week. 350k per year. 1 year.

I'll work hard, and accept the rest of your terms. I won't be needing the landline as I'll have all the entertainment I'll need.

It is, of course, non-negotiable. Well, unless the farm is in dire need of a new owner.

Make it a 30 hour workweek for quarter of a million (and free meals obviously, I could put up with a heavily potato-based diet just fine) and you'd have a deal. I'd bring a laptop with singleplayer vidya installed and with a hard-drive full of pre-torrented anime, and some art supplies.

@Little_Sheepling Well, it's pretty much the point that the location is far. It is the middle of nowhere in my province so you have to take the plane to leave your country!

@JaniSIr Well that's obvious. Most agricultural workers in my country are temporary foreign workers that are basically slaves. The locals don't want the jobs since the salaries are way too low for hard manual labor so only immigrants are willing to do it. And as this thread has demonstrated it, people don't seem to care that much if they have to work harder if there is good money attached to it (of course this is very exaggerated example).

The stipulations don't say I can't use the money to eventually improve the place by slowly making those things possible so yes

also it doesn't say I have to be there until I die, or that I can't take vacations so it's not that hard

No cellphone and no internet would be a tremendous loss for me, but the salary is incredible, and so I'll still ultimately take that 500k USD job offer. For personal entertainment at home, I can still read various kinds of books and manga, play console games, watch DVD movies, watch downloaded anime, movies/film, and TV series on my laptop and desktop, have a bunch of hard drives with me, and make personal artworks if I'm bored of everything else. Making huge down payments for houses that I would like to purchase would no longer be as difficult anymore as well, so yeah, sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.

There isn't really anywhere with no internet because satellite and radio internet unless you have a lot of trees with no openings. Even then you can set up a meshnet in theory at least. Plus if I had landline access that means I can tap into it to use DSL internet.

Not like it's too difficult to figure out. Usually people assume no tax in hypotheticals without a specific place named. Lets go with 2024 federal numbers for US.

$500,000 would fall under the bracket of 35% tax so $175,000 per year

60-hour workweek is 8,760 hours/year

So that comes to $19.98/hour though there is also state tax... Regardless at this point it is higher than minimum wage.

But there is more. The median annual income for farm workers is only around $25,000 to $29,999 (im not sure if that is before taxes or after, hopefully after for their sake). In terms of agricultural work that is a very good pay in comparison.

If it's under the table work (tax avoidance) then $500,000 per year at 60 hour work week would be $57.08/hour

@LoveYourSmile So you want to extort me so that I don't have to deal with a madman, and by that logic if I don't pay you're bound to eventually show up. But I don't mind it if you come to play in my territory. I can't say if you will like the game though.

Very nice, actually. I'll read a lot of books in store and such. I could send letters almost every day to ask for items and this would be the added benefit of improving my penmenship.

I'll definitely have my lofty dream of taking care of an ass (the animal, not one's butt) or a mule. Obviously because my tradition dictates that pigs are dirty and shouldn't be touched with human hands.

A lot of manual labor, bruh my profession is physical job and in Poland it is popular to go to such physical labor, in the past it used to be even slavery labor as there was a lot of controversy and criminality with such jobs in France, Italy, Germany etc.
60 hours a week and you ain't mentioning if it's only day work/whole weekend, if it's whole weekend that's just normal shift, where's the difficulty?

But I refuse,

I'd rather get less and have opportunity to spend time with archeology colleagues and drink some vodka with them.

The pay on offer for the position is many times higher than any potato farming job in history. The average potato farmer in the US makes ten times less. In various other countries it can be vastly less than that.

Suspicious... Perhaps under the "potato farm" there is a secret military installation with experimental technology. Now it all makes sense that communication with the outside world is forbidden.

Or perhaps the prospective employer is a MyAnimeList user who lacks a fundamental understanding of economics.

Most farm owners don't make over $100K per year from the entire operation, and that's before all the expenses. If you're seriously offering $500K per year per worker, forget about turning a profit and continuing the business...at that point, it's a matter of seeing how quickly you go broke.

@SmugSatoko Farming is NOT a business where you wanna turn a profit. 99% of a farmers income is Government Aid.

You just pulled that statistic out of your ass. It took a few seconds to search and find this:

"According to recent data, around 25% of US farms received government payments in 2022, with the average payment accounting for roughly 5% of gross cash income for those farms that did receive payments"

Hell yeah. Also if I just stay six months, I'd get 250 k right? I don't need more.
If I'm doing alright after the six months, I'd go for the full year.

Gotta work hard so that people can damage their health with chips and french fries. At least 60 hours a week! That's how it works with farm work!

It kinda doesn't, at least not in that climate. In the winter you work way less than the busy months a year.

This is a one-year contract. But if it can convince you, the farm is surrounded by woods and there is a mountain lake nearby.

LittleOwlbear said:

Yeah, it'd be more realistic that you'd work like 80hrs per week in the summer and do pretty much nothing in the winter, but I wanted to keep it simple. For the sake of this thread, let's just say that I built the largest agricultural greenhouse in the world just so I can cultivate potatoes in the winter.
