OK WOW!
I came with 0 exceptions, and got to see a great story, with a really really tiny plot hole which I don't think that effects the story, but keeps me interested
yep, only this one.

Other than that, the story took a really cool route, which is to not focus only at the main character, but to main focus on EVERYONE! THIS IS IMPORTANT!
Really really entertaining to watch how all of them bond together and reach the simple yet difficult realization of what they have in common with all the other of them.

A really good movie to watch when you are not that happy, or you had a rough day, but also keep in mind that,
"The things you are wishing for, may have just been Infront of you, before wishing them."

9/10

Had a really fun time with this one. The story was actually very entertaining and the wide variety of characters meant it never got boring. Had a few pretty cool twists at the end too. Definitely don't miss this if it gets an English release.

Just finished watching it, and it was an enjoyable watch. But with most time travely stuff there were some glaring issues. Namely the fact that after they were told "no parallel universes" that the nerd didn't immediately think of time shenanigans. And even earlier than that, the fact that subaru/akiko who are from 1985 and 1992, didn't say a thing about the PSP/Vita type thing masamune was constantly playing.

The jump in technology they saw between the massive bricks that were cell phones at that time, and the difference in video resolution on the portal being better than their home televisions, should have immediately tipped them off to time shenanigans. Would have been such an easy plot hole to avoid too, just don't have him carry around a piece of tech that should have immediately tipped off half the cast.

Well I had high expectations but it was quite the disappointing film, the characters were so bland and boring. I found it quite funny how they were all from different times but none of them realized ,and they spent so much time together.

and the million dollar question is "HOW ZA HELL DID WOLF LADY SET EVERYTHING UP"

Opened some random thing that i saw on the website i watch in and it turned out to be quite enjoyable for like the first half of the movie then bam it just kept getting worst and worsting and the writing was just falling off the characters were one dimentional and just maybe bipolar? and the ending is as random and stupid as youd expect

My only gripe with it is honestly the person that chose the music who puts rock music on a (hope i dont get banned from the website for the 2ed time for saying this) sexual harassment/r-a-p-e scene ,honestly every single piece of music choice from before the point for a while and till the end were really really bad

But still first part had great dialogue and great honestly everything

I'm Japanese reading the original novel.
  • They avoid talking about the real world outside the castle. Because they hate the real world and come to the castle, they don't want to poke each other's wounds. It is an unspoken rule in the castle that it is forbidden to bring up topics outside the castle. So they didn't realize that they went to the same school and that the time was different.
Akiko doesn't play games, and Subaru says, "I've never played a game before, so I didn't know that recent games were amazing until I met Masamune." Also, Masamune is telling people around him that he is playing a game console that has not yet been released as a test play from a game production company. At first, Kokoro is surprised by Masamune's unfamiliar game, but she is convinced by his explanation.
  • By the way, in the original story, when Kokoro says to Subaru, "You look like Ron from Harry Potter," he asks, "What is Harry Potter?" She's surprised that Subaru doesn't know Harry Potter.
Masamune says, "I have PlayStation 3 and 4," and Kokoro says, "3!"
Masamune  "Normally you should be surprised at 4, you're strange.
Although they don't notice the time difference themselves, But they both think they are strange people because sometimes their conversations don't mesh.

Well, if you think about it normally, I think it's difficult to think of people of the same age in front of you as people in the future or the past, because they can only see things subjectively. We viewers are easy to notice because we are looking at the story from an objective point of view.

Gotta be honest. The source material is good, and with that context the movie was pretty much an inaccurate adaptation. Ya'll should give the LN or even the manga a try, its pretty well written. Ya even get conclusions on
and more character interaction/development.

Characters have some stiff expression sometimes, especially Kokoro.

The moment where Ureshino came back all beaten up was so sudden felt like comedic timing.

Climax felt awkward with the whole stairs part, the wolf not doing anything when Kokoro is there, and how they showed getting Anzu back.

All of this, the LN/manga addresses much better. Nice movie still.

Your description doesn't make any sense, because Masamune lived before the launch of the PS4. He and Kokoro don't even discuss Playstation in the English translation. The Harry Potter scene is different as well.

"Subaru-kun, has anyone told you that you look like Ron in Harry Potter? The first time I saw you, I thought there was this clear resemblance."
   "Harry Potter?"
   "The book."
As she said it, she realized the image was more of the character from the movie than the book. But Subaru shrugged. "That's the first time anyone's said that," he said, shaking his head. "You really like books, don't you?"

I'm Japanese, so I haven't read the overseas translations, so I'm not sure about that point, but Masamune was asked by a game production company to test play the PS4, so he said he owns it even though it hasn't been officially released yet.

P. S. I haven't read the manga version either.

i get this movie target demographic is young kids, but the story line and characters just seem written in a way that is too simplistic for the purpose of moving the story. doesn't hold a candle to a ghibli film that's for sure.

I accidentally voted wrong and pressed hated it while trying to press the vote button, damn dat thumb! :(

Anyways, I liked this anime. The pacing felt a bit confusing to me but it's still enjoyable. The part where they showed the bullies going to Kokoro's house is really well done, you can feel the dread and worry that they'll actually physically hurt Kokoro. Once you get enough information, you can figure out that they're not from the same era and the real identity of Mr. Wolf (they're kind of cliché after all). The biggest gripe that I have which I commonly have with movies like this is that it has an ending that's more open to viewer's interpretation, while I enjoy endings that shows the conclusion clearly. They did show us Kokoro, Rion, and Aki in the real world. I suppose the businessman that passed by Kokoro near the ending is actually Subaru. I might have missed Fuuka and Urashino? Still, I wanted to see the gang interact in the real world.

That was weird ending. They absolutely ignore all the characters who were not some way connected to fl from the ending (that like 4 characters). On the other hand they were overfocused on the wolf/sister character (like Music box goodbye was enough, not need to extend to unnecessary disappearing postcredit scenes).

It was a great movie storywise. animation and pacing were not up to mark. Though ending is what left me most unsatisfied. I wonder if novel has more to it which they didn't adapt

Edit- just checked out manga version. The kitajima story line of meeting the grandma's friend and husband and then being a free school teacher. Especially the emphasis of school name and all...those were way way better ending than movie. Though even in that they ignored other characters.

This was good until we were told Aki wanted to stay in the castle because her dad(?) was an abuser/rapist and she was punished for not wanting to go back to that home life.  Also, the upbeat music over the chase scene just seemed gross.  major docked points for the way they handled her backstory, ew.

Overall an OK movie it just at the end we dont get a closure about other character's stories end, i do love the twist about their situation. Such a good refreshing anime for a people that interesting in watch animovie without thinking too much and want to take a normal one instead a big plot. After all simple is the best

I never read the LN/manga. Just watched it in theaters. Overall an okay movie. But...I felt the execution of the film was lacking for 75% of it. I like the character development of everyone and it was an awesome reveal at the end. But I feel that there was a lot of content missing (animation-wise and story-wise) to get me hooked. So much so that I want to go read the novel to give it another chance.

Is it a trend to use new voice actors for movie adaptations now?

1-2 big insert song + mcs have voice actors with little to no experience. Natsu e no tunnel, KimiAi/BokuAi, now this... It wouldn't be so much of an issue if there weren't scenes where the voice acting clearly break the immersion.

Conceptually, the movie is great. But the execution was pretty bad- like most other animovie adaptations last year.

Honestly, it seems like the director just doesn't know what the story is trying to portray and goes about adapting it for the first hour before squeezing all the big moments into one climax before ending it off in a sort of 'happy' note.

Was the movie supposed to be about friendship? Cause it doesn't help that the more than half the friendcast peaces out of the movie with their farewells, when the movie alludes they'll try to meet again in the real world.
Or is it about Kokoro overcoming her trauma? Since that plot point was resolved 40 minutes before the credit rolls when Tojo Moe reveals everything.

Okami-sama/Rion sisters reveal feels unexceptional since the first mention of her existence is only 1 hour into the movie and her second time on screen is 15 minutes before Rion somehow realizes this at the very end.

Although it was enjoyable to pass the time, more often than not, I end up thinking how good this movie could have been rather than what it ended up being, since the adaptation really failed at making anything believable or memorable.

To be fair, the movie was enjoyable in passing the time but really spent it's two hour run poorly. Overall the movie just had unfortunate pacing and directing, given it could have been quite incredible.

The anime omits what I feel is an important detail in Fuka's backstory.

I was feeling lenient at the theater, but the lack of urgency during the climax together with the criticisms others have shared will keep me from recommending this movie over the book.

Ok movie, aart and animation were really good, but that's all. Themes were kinda all over the place, molesting one got especially fast and shallow look. We don't get any type of explanation for why Wolf and the 7 Lambs was in the midst of it., what has that got to do with Rion's sister.
Since BD got out yesterday, hopefully official subs will be better.

It is often hard to adapt written works: a page long description can be rendered in a two second shot. Nevertheless, the seemingly uneventful first hour conveys the sense of isolation of the castle perfectly. A lot of coming-of-age stories describe fugues into alternate realities, but I can't think of any that captured the feeling of a safe space as much as this castle did. Despite being a fantasy story, it all felt very real. Which is definitely the strength of the movie: the sobriety in direction reflects the sobriety of the source material. The cast of characters while being stereotypical to some extent, never fall into overdramatisation. In contrast, in Bell for example the take on the same serious youth issue of alienation is diluted by the feel-goodness of the tone, which ultimately reduces its importance.

Another interesting aspect of the movie was the time perspective. While every generation likes to think itself special, the struggle against a prescriptive mold is eternal in the different shapes it takes throughout the eras. It is worthy of note that the moral of the story is the same as in Tojimari no Suzume ("it'll be fine, you'll grow out of it"), as if the social divide between generations couldn't be resolved directly through words anymore, but had to be addressed through the mediation of a cinematic experience. In that, it truly mirrors the signs of the times.

Just watched the movie. It was decent where I could guess the plot and mystery. But the last one when the boy and the girl meet, it produce a plot hole where in the story it's 7 years gap, but how he and she can met?
Japanese plot always make predictable storytelling but the predictable is still not deepest ice berg where it still has hidden mystery that could produce plot twist like I didn't realize that the wolf was his sister, but this plot twist made the story a little unbelievable because there is no foreshadow how the girl wolf is his sister.

It's easy to miss that they were from different times since the school was same and all were helped by Kitajima Sensei. Also they had other big problem in life, and later were so focused on finding the key that finding about their origins wasn't priority. Also being exactly 7 years apart meant time and seasons were same for them. And it's not that far fetched. We are so lost in our lives that we know nothing about people we spend hours with daily. I didn't have a troubled childhood like these kids, but if I think about it, I know nothing about my classmates I spend hours in school and college with.
Speaking of the movie, I really enjoyed it. The story is told from the perspective of Kokoro and hence we don't get to see what happens to other kids. I don't think it would be possible to fit stories of each kid in the movie without cutting important parts.
Someone above said that Kokoro's trauma was resolved 40 minutes before end. This might be true but that doesn't guarantee a happy ending for her. Ureshino got over his trauma and went back to school, but he was still beaten up. Rion having all the memories and supporting Kokoro in school does give an indication of a happy ending. It's different from others who might have switched schools. I also think it's not justified to evaluate it solely as a mystery anime, since mystery is a minor part of it. I feel it's more about facing the wolfs in our lives, and you might see a different message based on your life experiences. You might not see any message at all as well. But for me who had some sort of trouble going to the school (I went anyway, but my attendance was low) at some point in time, I think the story resonates with me. There was someone who supported me openly. And wolves didn't ever attack me, it's the sight of them that made me run away. So my life was easier.

I think the story is about gaining confidence to speak out, which characters gained when they met each other and talked. They realized they are not alone in this world, and their close ones will surely hear them out and understand their problems. Their memories might disappear, but their changed feeling won't, which will help them live better in the world.

@Another_ZHODY Im gonna give you a quiz question that may be outside of your capability to answer, but ill still try, ok here i go ... Where can a person potentially fix, or attempt to fix their problems ? A: in a real world, where the real things happen, or B: in a fantastical castle that does not exist ?

You have three guesses. But you can guess it in one.

There are some things here in there that feels rushed but this is still indeed one of the best anime movie I have ever watched, the strong points isn't the story but definitely the message behind it which is that it is OK to seek for help or stop.

I am actually satisfied with the ending, it's the viewer's imagination that should decide how the story will go on.

9/10. but I feel like this movie isn't for the overthinking type of people.

@mitsuhataki Thanks a lot for this! I liked the movie quite much, but found the ending rather unsatisfying. It felt very unfair that Kokoro and Rion got a happier ending than the others (in my opinion, at least) because they didn't have to part ways and Rion got to keep his memories. The visuals you shared don't change this, but it still made me feel a bit better to see the characters not be miserable after the end of the movie. I think they should have included this in the movie, maybe during the end credits. Anyway, thanks :)

If not parallel world than the obvious answer is different timeline. I had a feeling Kitajima sensei was Akiko too. But damn that ending still got me good in the feels, teared up, specially with the ED visuals with the sister watching over Rion.

So I'm guessing Akiko remembered the events cause it was her wish which was granted. Not sure whether Rion remembers too but seems like it? As for everyone else, they don't cause Kokoro reacted to Rion like she didn't know him. Wish they all remembered though but alas.

Akiko/Kitajima sensei went on helping every one of them in the future, she grew up to be a great girl. Also I hope Fuka and Ureshino ends up together. Lucky guy, will get an older woman.

Nice movie, osts were good. Aside the ending part with the reveals and all of their stories, the movie was a bit boring at times but interesting concept nonetheless and they delivered with the ending so was worth it.

A really good movie to watch when you are not that happy, or you had a rough day, but also keep in mind that,
"The things you are wishing for, may have just been Infront of you, before wishing them."

9/10
Great Movie!

I have a question about, so rion and aki has castle's memory but then why Kokoro doesn't?

OK WOW!
I came with 0 exceptions, and got to see a great story, with a really really tiny plot hole which I don't think that effects the story, but keeps me interested
yep, only this one.

The plotwist dawned upon me when Subaru says how advanced the computer has become, it was still just a guess, though.

Decades apart and the school's uniform design stays the same. Talk about consistencies.

Ending was alright, a bit disappointed 'cuz they don't show how the other kids live their life.
