What anime has left you with that "empty" feeling?

You know the one I'm talking about.

After you finish a really good show or series and you're left with that empty feeling. I usually get it from most romance anime, or anything with a really good ending. I know it happens to me because I get really attached to characters and relationships, so any tragedy just messes me up.

Shoutout to Your Lie in April for making me feel like a trainwreck for a week.

The closest word I've found that embodies it well is "Saudade"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudade

Thanks Brazil for having the words to describe my emotional state.

first of all, i love non-portuguese speakers who are fond of the word "saudade", it's like a little national treasure c:

i felt like that after serial experiments lain and shoujo kakumei utena, especially the latter. the ending was so powerful and so different from anything i'd ever seen before, it really stuck with me for like a week

With an "Empty Feeling" you mean that it was really sad? Like being depressed, afterward?

If so, then YLIA would be the perfect answer, from me.

Just anything that made the viewer have a distinct feeling of missingness or longing for more, or something along those lines.

Even something not inherently sad like Cowboy Bebop caused that for me. But I might just be a baby.

Akage no Anne would be my first choice definitely. Cried twice.

Sucked when the spice and wolf anime ended inconclusively but I just read the novels after that.

I remember feeling disappointed after I finished the black lagoon ova.

Nothing else really. All the mainstream "feels" anime do little to nothing for me and everything else doesn't affect me enough for me to have that feeling.

There's just straight up not an English word that comes close to it from my understanding and research. I'm fluent in German as well, and the closest thing we have is "sehnsucht". It's always interesting to see how different languages and cultures can portray emotions through a different concept or word that isn't present in others.

Quite a few shows, YLIA for sure. Kimi no Na wa and The Garden of Words too. First real anime I watched was SAO and I felt wrecked when I finished it. At least until I started watching better shows.

I didn't know about the word before. Sennen Joyuu is basically about this feeling (thank you OP, I finally have a good description) and this is also exactly how it made me fell. That's what I love it so much for. And the second one worth mentioning is Cowboy Bebop.

Death Note actually did this to me too, but I feel like it was amplified by the fact that it was my first anime. The post anime depression was real.

Funnily enough apart from your typical, Tokyo Magnitude and that lot, A Place further than the universe? I felt really bummed out after finishing it. Maybe because I'd miss the characters a lot, or I'd never have an experience like that or something along those lines. Maybe it's just me, cause the show was lovely otherwise!

i really hate those feelings. this empty feeling doesnt only occur when the story was sad or depressed but also when it was a great adventure or amazing story which left wistful and nostalgic immediately after finishing.

finished monogatari second season and i'm totally empty right now. first arc was low but holy shit the story and char developement was so good.

as a child i always felt very empy after finishing DB and DBZ. shinsekai yori is another one. and FMAB. and psycho pass and steins:gate. fate zero. and many others. dont have to forget little wihich academia

I've never really felt that way. I've left anime wanting more (like Dragon Maid), but if an anime ends well enough why would you want to ruin that? Exception being Kare Kano which didn't have Hideaki Anno for the last 8 episodes so ofc I felt like I was empty after watching it

Why don’t we become monsters and really mess up this awful world? Just destroy until there’s no more evil, no more sadness, no more anything…
Wouldn’t that be great?

As much as I loved the show, I felt that Zombie Land Saga should have more than what we where given. Even worse that it's an anime original so there is no source material to rely on (then again, Gainax is a lot like that). Sure it may have a second season in the future and the anime answered a few questions we have in mind when watching. The ending just made me want to say, "I want more!" topped with several unanswered questions in my head. In fact, you may think the same if you've seen the entirety of Zombie Land Saga.
It isn't just Zombie Land Saga. Basically, every anime with incomplete adaptations made me feel empty. There were some anime like Noragami, The World God Only Knows and Ouran that made me feel less empty by reading the manga. We also have stuff like Fruits Basket which I felt less empty due to the announcement of a new anime adaptation.
And then we have cases like Haruhi Suzumiya, Baccano and Konosuba which are all incomplete light novel adaptations. From where I come from, it's not easy to legally get access right away to read the light novels (not to mention that the latter 2 are unfinished). Oh, and there's also Full Metal Panic which

So yeah, there are a lot of anime that made me feel empty.

A romance anime that messed me up would be Oregairu.

BTW "Saudade" doesn't mean this kind of "empty" LOL

White Album 2 one of the worst endings I have seen when it comes to anime + the anime was made for one reason.
advertising for a Visual Novel, sigh.

Manga woud be Henshin, don't think I have ever read something as fked up as that.
Happy that Henshin got a alterntive verison now.

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen, too.
The ending is horrible and even if the anime got a sequel it coud not really feel that emptiness that got left behind.

From what I've read, it definitely describes the feelings I get. We all experience after-anime sadness differently. c:

That usually happens with long shows. It happened with DBZ and Bleach. After spending so much time with the characters, you miss them.

Also happened with Digimon Adventure 02, and Digimon Tamers.

Texhnolyze. Even though the whole show is full of nihilism and depression - and i had no expectations from the end whatsoever - it still felt really brutal...the way it ended that is.

I completely agree with that, with the last few episodes, along with how it ended, I’d say that I had a stronger “empty” feeling than usual with Texhnolyze.

this happens to me very often, the strongest was probably welcome to the nhk though, way too relatable. recently, madoka magica gave me that empty feeling too, and so did the rebellion movie, although the emptiness that came with rebellion was much darker.. cute girls doing cute things also does this a lot too, such as new game or yuyushiki
