When do you feel that girls on the Internet aren't exactly for real? Usually when I notice that a person is trying super hard to act like a female instead of naturally acting like one, I immediately can infer that it is actually a guy who is trying to seek for attention, while I might be totally wrong, that is just what my gut always says. Case in point, it's hard for me to make female friends here for a reason. And you, MAL users? |

At most, you could only have a Probability that a Person is of a specific Sex, which could be influenced by the Writing Style and by Information you're reading about him or her, unless you meet them in Person. I don't think too much about it, because I don't really care about what biological Sex anyone here is. |

Yeah that's why people can be catfished, lul I always look into styles too. If it's done in such a fake/shallow way, I immediately think it's trap-worthy. |

When a profile reads that they're female (not specified too, for the most part), I believe that they're female. I mean, sure, pretending to be a female on the internet can get you more attention. I've just always had a hunch that it doesn't happen as much as people say it does, though. I'm gonna go ahead and say that I'm no good at pointing at those kind of people. |

But why do you even need to know, unless you want to date? I think that you should let people be whoever they want on the internet. And these witch hunts are rather annoying. As for your question, if a person tries to impersonate a girl in a dominantly male community, he has specific goals, i.e. attention whoring, benefits, trolling, whiteknight support. Normally said person won't have enough patience to play it straight. So if a person is too hard on these things and/or slips from time to time, it's high chance that he is a fake. Some manage to keep the image for years though. |

A bit off topic ... The way i treat users is not correlated with their self proclaimed gender/sexual orientation. If they behave like a delicate snowflake ... then i will treat them accordingly. If they identify as female and have the mouth of a salty redneck truck driver ... then im sure as hell aint treating him/her/it/watever the f like a lady. @OP having said that , i do not really care one way or the other if they are females or males IRL nor do i actually have the means to distinguish one from the other. |

Even those who are not new sometimes claim that they use less curse words around me. On the other hand, I've been in bad fights there, and there're some severe gynophobes who start to bash me straight from the start (or any girl for that matter), or people, who end up any discussion with "but what a woman like you can know". It isn't always easy to tell, but I don't think a lot of people lie about their gender on this site. It's just a hunch of course, but anime isn't really something that is primarily dominated by one gender or the other (maybe it leans slightly more towards males nowadays though), so it isn't the same as say, a video game forum or MMO, where people are more likely to pretend to be female for the laughs, attention or to try and get special treatment. As others have already said though, if someone seems to be trying too hard, or comes across as being a bit "fake" or too stereotypical, they're most probably lying. Edit: Nico- said: Don't get me wrong though, I have plenty of female Internet friends, but it's the ones who are so into their "gender" that always give me a bad impression easily based on past experiences of being catfished in the past. This too. If someone seems to keep subtly (or not so subtly) referencing the fact that they're "female", it just feels fishy as hell. Most girls are perfectly aware of their gender, they don't need to keep reminding themselves and others. |

We had a season of traps once, when there were two cases of traps created specifically for trolling one after another. And then there was that one "girl", who even provided a photo with a nickname. It was his sister, as it turned out later. I thought the user was female too! Frankly, I don't know why he did it, he didn't really reap any benefits, at least he was acting as a sane female person of the type that doesn't get much benefits. There's a time i talked to a girl for like 6 days we got to know each other, she has a very beautiful pic in fb. but when i tried exchanging skype or viber, she wont. It turns out she's a male. It's always been a bit of an enigma to me, I just assumed most did it for attention or they wanted to get some cheap giggles. Girls have never been very open with me online though, maybe they think I'm a male in disguise, who knows. Someone refusing to talk over Skype could just be they don't have a mic or webcam, but even if that is the case, you might want to start assuming your female buddy is male if that happens. I personally can't talk over Skype because I don't have mic or webcam (not on my desktop anyhow), but I have 3 different headsets for 3 of my gaming consoles. They're the only thing I have to "prove" my gender. I wonder if some people go as far as getting their sisters or girlfriends to talk for them over voice conversations though? That would be taking things to a whole new level though, like the Twilight Zone of creepiness. |
