i DO NOT ask this as someone who can't acept that people don't like what I like. I am FINE with people not liking Angel Beats. I am just really curious of the exact reasons why people hate/dislike the show.

Please be as specificas possible!

Also, do you feel YuiHinata was forced or adorable/ I see a little of both ._.

Hearing opposing view points is really fun!

OP, Why are you so obsessed with trhis short 2010 show? Hm, it givesme lots of creative inspiration, me tihnks.

I think it's because the anime was too short and rushed, and they didn't show the backstories of the other supporting characters.

Most people here love Angel Beats...

I hate it.

The anime tried too hard to make you cry. It was just bad. The plot was weak. Oh, so we're all immortal? Plz... The most interesting part was the protagonist's backstory, which is a shame for the anime. The final scene is ridiculous. The characters are one dimensional. The music is painful to hear. The jokes are overused. They are also not funny. The art is fine, but only the art.

I think it's mostly because of the pacing and constant infodumps/insufficient explanation of important plot details. I personally felt that the series had MUCH more potential as well (since the premise is admittedly quite unique), but it tried to do too many things at once with too little airing time to work with.

There's little to no context for the moments that they're trying to sell as emotional most of the time. It's like playing extremely sad music and then showing a loli crying and screaming "NOW CRY WITH HER." Why?

With that said though, I gave it a 7 for a reason and I think it had everything else going for it save for the rushed drama which turned into melodrama.

Didn't care for episodic structure and how seemingly unfocused it was, didn't find the plot, characters, or setting particularly interesting, and felt the drama/ sad parts were forced. Although the beer bottle scene is absolute gold.

Interesting premise. Great animation, great music. Looked really professional and looked really strong from episode 1.

But by the end there were a ton of characters and most of them weren't even developed, like not even in the least. They all have back stories, right?

They laid the drama on really thick. Some parts were tear-jerkers but others were eye-rollers.

Had some fairly big plot holes too IMO. That said, I don't hate it, I did enjoy the show overall, but I can see why people might not like the anime (especially if they were a fan of the franchise).

It has too many characters, but the hate is unwarranted, but hey that's MAL.
Yoshii Kiria took over as leader of Fairytale and rebuilt it and became one of Tsukunes formidable enemies but let's save that story for another time

Hehe, let me introduce him to you again, kid. This is Shuzen Issa (who is MIA during the final battle), who will become your 'trainer' starting today. You still have much to go if you want to become the headmaster.

I don't hate it but the ending was really rushed and didn't deliver the emotional impact it was clearly trying to provide at all. I mean it was intended to be a longer show initially and you could really see that it should have been.

I'd rather it have less characters with the same amount of episodes, then more episodes and the same amount of characters. The length was sufficient for the story.

Except the story was supposed to be about these characters getting over their pasts; it's more of a character driven show so the length depends on the characters not the plot. With that in mind, the length was no where near sufficient considering half the cast was nothing more than decorations by the end.

Everyone basically named all the flaws with Angel Beats! thus far. Rushed, too many characters for development, unexplained plot, etc. I've watched it a couple of days ago and it wasn't bad by any means. People were just comparing it to After Story so naturally I had high expectations.

The lesson I learned is high expectations is fine...just not when you compare something to After Story xD.

It's r--Damn, everyone already took the good replies.

As much as I liked the art, music, and the fact it was one of my first shows, it's still very flawed and overrated, especially on this site. Most characters are bland, one-dimensional, and/or generic versions of famous archetypes (e.g. Yui being the eccentric hyperactive girl, similar to Fuko from Clannad, funny considering both were written by Jun Maeda). Obligatory complaint about rushed ending here and hope that the VN will fix everything.
And I mean that in the most sexually painful way possible.

Yeah but they could have had less characters and more time to develop them, then have so many characters and develop them all in more episodes.

You can set an amount of characters in the series. More characters doesn't mean it's better. In 12 episodes, they could've developed each character more. Some of the characters were pretty pointless and didn't really fit in with the group anyway, like T.K. who was only for comedic purposes.

If someone told me it was like After story, I would have very low expectations. Good thing it wasn't comparable.

Yes of course, but my response was directed at you saying that the length was enough for the story. Since this show is character driven, there's no 'enough length.' They could have just kept adding new characters entering the after life and have 500 episodes and it would still work.

Fundog said:

No one said more == better.
Yes but obviously Jun Maeda didn't expect to be told "hey we'll end it pretty soon so wrap it up."
Fundog said:

This just goes back to the original point that there wasn't enough time. None of the characters would be pointless if this was 26 episodes or something.

It was bad because the story was a mess. Jun Maeda planned a darker plot for Angel Beats! but drop it because Key wanted the anime to be watchable by anyone. Judging the said plot, Angel beats would have been a 24 episode anime.

The plot involves Otonashi discovering that he was killing his friends by freeing them of their regrets (turning them to shadows) and basically tries to save them.

I wonder if the visual novel will follow this plot.

Rejoice there is a visual novel with part/beat/volume 1 coming this may. All characters will be fully developed and realized in this visual novel(s). Also when the visual novel series is done there is a very high chance of an anime adaprtation since its key and angel beats is very popular.

I don't think we'll see another Angel Beats anime before 2020. The VN is ridiculously ambitious (6 volumes / 19 routes) and judging from all the trouble Key went through before deciding to release volume 1, I'm expecting a lot of delays.
Also, all I've seen from the VN are pantyshots and hints at "pick your own waifu" routes (Iwasawa), so I'm not getting my hopes up.

While it is true that AB was originally planned to be 24-eps-long, the rest of this post is nothing more than (interesting) fanfiction. Especially considering that the bolded part goes directly against the themes of the show (damaged people managing to get over their regrets and going back to the cycle of life), and even if Jun Maeda wanted to write a darker story, I doubt that he would have completely changed the themes and message he had planned, instead of just fixing the story.

I liked it, but there could have easily been 10-15 more episodes. Really could have had more episodes like Yui's where they go out and help main characters. Get to know their backstory and really help them.
Did we ever find out Hinata's backstory? If not, then thats stupid cause he was such a big character (in his own way) as was Noda.

It was just very rushed and thats not what you want when you start a series

Don't worry, there are plenty of people here who hate on Angel Beats. It's in the elitist club's list of shit/overrated anime and there are plenty of negative reviews who get a lot of upvotes.

Yes we did, in episode 4.
Also, I don't think that your wish to know more about random side characters who got 3 seconds of screentime each translates to a flaw of the show. I also don't think that repeating the formula of helping more of those characters over and over would have added much to the show's themes.

Technically it did though. The show WAS supposed to have more episodes and explore the other characters; that's the expectation it built up. Suddenly cutting it short like that and making the mess that was the last arc lessened the enjoyment of many.
