Manga is great :)
I entered the anime world because of One Piece. I was flipping through the CN channels when I chanced upon One Piece. After 30 seconds, my sister pulled me away and showed me REAL anime. And what do I mean by REAL anime? Subbed. (No offense INTENDED). Though at first I really didn't like subtitles, I grew accustomed to it. I started watching other series as well. My sister would tell me was happening "in the future" of One Piece, and I would always badger her to tell me more. Eventually, I think it was she who introduced me to manga as well. I just wanted more One Piece! LMAO. :D It was a bit weird at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Since then, I've been reading manga for now... at least 7 years. Even still there are series that get confusing. I think The Breaker had a few chapters that kept switching between left to right, and right to left. You just read a few pages and if it doesn't make sense then go back and try reading it the opposite way. A good tell though is setting. If you see a big left panel, and two half sized panels to the right of it, then it's probably left to right. If it's vice versa then it's right to left. Also, if you had two equally sized panels for instance, side by side and you don't know which is the right way to read it, then try LOOKING at the panels. Sometimes the right one will have a boat in the middle of the sea, and left one will have a close up on the character who is fishing on that boat. Just by looking at the pictures, you'd be able to tell that in this case, it would go from right to left.
Webtoons are a bit annoying with reading confusions. I can never remember which side to read them. I know that korean manwha and webtoons tend to be left to right, but I don't think they all follow that rule... Thankfully it doesn't matter too much, because you just read from up to down anyway. Bubbles don't tend to be side to side :)
Anyway, you just get used to it. If you want start out with Manwha, or Korean Manga. They go from left to right, and can help you get used to the format of reading the boxes.
Once you get used to reading manga, it's actually quite enjoyable. For series that have anime adaptations, like One Piece, I can legit "hear" their voices as I read. For many series I sometimes THINK I saw the scene in the anime, when in reality the scene hadn't even been adapted yet! For instance, Hajime No Ippo! I thought one of the comedy scenes I love so much, was a scene I saw in the anime! But in fact... NOPE. :P Goes to show that once you get used to the medium, you don't notice the colors, lack of sound or animation. It's kinda awesome how that works :D |
