Went to watch it 3 times now, on different screening formats. Even brought some friends and fam. It still has me transfixed, and I wasn't even a big CSM fan before this despite having read the arc already. What a win for MAPPA, though I think they were fully banking on it having positive reception to help get S2 greenlit earlier.

In terms of format preference, I enjoyed Dolby Cinema the most for its superior surround sound audio implementation and brighter picture, but IMAX was not too different and was perfect for the slightly bigger picture and boomy audio. 3D + 4DX had me a little miffed at the janky seat motions and the poorly-timed light flash effects. The 3D popped at first, especially for environmental scenes, but quickly desensitized me as soon as the action began. Wind effects were cool though.

After the movie ended we started arguing with our friend group to find any flaws in it considering the impact it had left on us. Sure, one of them said the music was a bit too loud at some point, something that could be blamed more on the theatre. Another one said that action bits were maybe a minute too long and there was one who said (in other words) "if you think about it, they pulled a Ranma 1/2 on that scene".

But yeah, in essence, it was incredibly solid, more so than we were expecting probably. It had a nice build up to the relationship between Denji and Reze, the twist regarding her nature, another traumatic event for Denji, and diabolic tactical and outstanding set of battle shots with the camera going all over the place along with some crazily drawn animation, one of the best opening themes of this season and an ending that hits hard. The writing, the characters, the cinematography, the soundtrack, everything is set into the right place and time to do what it does best.

I've got no complaints, maybe just wondering where did Reze find panties during "that" scene. Of course, after you see how many times she flashes to the camera you can see why they were necessary.

Just got to see the movie in theaters and I must admit, I was kinda underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, this was by no means a bad movie, it's just, why was this arc adapted as a movie in the first place? I honeslty feel, this whole arc would have hit way harder, if it had been part of a regular anime season with weekly episodes. That way we would have had way more time to get invested in Denji's relationship with Reze, her betrayal and finally her death. Each new week/episode would have basically had a new plot twist. Instead we got a movie that went: "This is Reze, isn't she cute? Aaaaaaaaaand she's dead". I feel like a 1 hour long movie doesn't do this arc justice (and this is coming from an anime only watcher). I envy the manga readers who probably got to spend a lot more time with Reze in each new chapter than the mere hour we who watched the movie got. Honeslty felt like Reze was more of a random one off villain, like the ones you see in non canon movies. But this was a canon movie! And with how many Reze cosplays I had seen at conventions over the years leading up to this movie, I kinda expected her character to have a more important role (or at least a longer lasting one). Oh well, guess that's on me for setting my expectations high. Certainly won't deny that Demon Slayer Infinity Castle probably played a part in that, concidering I only watched a few weeks ago. Speaking of Demon Slayer tho, I really hope Chainsaw Man does what Demon Slayer did with the Mugen Train movie and re-releases the Reze movie as part of the next CSM Season. I would love to rewatch this arc in an episodic format :)

I saw this in the comments of the pool ost and wanted to share it

The fact that the ED is named "Jane Doe" is extremely sad

Growing up as a guinea pig in Russia, the name Reze itself might also be fake. No one knows her real name. Hence she is the Jane Doe that suddenly appeared in Denji's life

Reze has been lying to Denji throughout the entire movie, but I think at the moment before death, she thought to Denji not as the Bomb Demon, not as Reze, but as herself: Someone who also grew up without any attachment, never went to school, never had a normal day throughout childhood, and as ironic the fate is, met another similarly aged boy, who also grew up in the pit of hell. Two lonely soul discovered each other, which is why deep down, Reze knows why she didn't kill Denji the moment when they first met. Her excuse of not running away with Denji is also because "She killed a lot of people", but never "I don't like Denji". But Denji doesn't care if she's lying to him or not. His mind is simple and he knows he's an idiot that can't control his desire. Despite in love with Makima his body still moves for Reze

To Denji, he would never know why Reze didn't come, and what her thoughts are. To Denji, it just seemed that he got dumped. After a good meal, a promised date with Makima, he'll immediately forget about Reze, meaning Reze, as someone who had existed so shortly in Denji's life, had officially became *Jane Doe*,

Just came back from watching this in the cinema. If you can, watch it on the big screen, it’s absolutely worth it!

Very good adaptation of the manga. Beautiful direction and Reze’s seeiyu knocks it out of the park. And MAPPA delivers.

I wouldn’t go quite as far as scoring this as the 2nd best anime of all time, but MAL’ers love the hyperbole.

Just watched, holy shit it was amazing.
But it has been years since I saw an anime on theaters, so I think my impression go really high too.

The story was short but fun. And even if I never read the manga I somehow knew it was going to be Makima the one to finish Reze in the end 😭

holy that was insane. start to finish. CINEMA

like so well produced from the get-go. this chill/trendy/awesome vibe into romance/beautiful to NONSTOP peak action for 50 mins into a sad poetic ending

crazy. loved all the extra character depth too (not a manga reader). eg seeing more of the angel devil

10/10. deserves its score

@ScarRufus Nah, Chainsaw man and Demon Slayer movies production-wise is an outlier.
I watched Haikyuu and Kuruno Basket movies on the theatre before, production-wise they're just slightly better than the tv series, but nothing mindblowing. Demon Slayer and Chainsawman is on another level production-wise, with lots and lots of anime original combat sequences too.

This movie pulls on your heart strings and tears them out of you with such delicate grace that cannot help but be amazed by its skill. Like, since my first viewing, every visit so far has been an agonizing pain. Just knowing how twisted the outcome will be and yet hoping and wishing for a better outcome. Only for it to come crashing down and be taken all away again, like a rug being pulled from under... I have yet to see this film five times in total, but I swear that I will do so

Beautiful adaptation. Mappa making actually followable action scenes is always a treat. Typhon devil in particular was jaw dropping to see in motion. Usually with these movie sequels, I find the pacing NOT worth sitting through, but Fujimoto's writing and the staff's condensing of this arc was near perfect. Nothing but love tbh ❤️

The animation was stellar. I just returned from watching the movie. The music, voice acting, sound, all that was awesome! I see why it is so highly rated :)

While the action scenes were stupendous, that pool scene was so well done. Forget the nudity (it wasn't sexual at all) but the animation there showed you the love they put into the film.

this movie made me think that denji wasn't a bad mc at all unlike last season you can actually understand him since where he is
coming from and how he grew up i feel bad for denji all the women in his life want to kill him except for
reze at the end where she chose to go to the cafe and meet him but met makima first that was isane, i have to say that i feel bad for denji all the women in his life want to kill him.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWW FUCK MAKIMA

I was so excited for the Reze redemption arc, for the two of them to meet each other at that cafe, fuck. I was so excited. I'm still so pissed thinking about it.

I wish there was one more date scene, like another 30 minutes of slice of life before the balls to the walls action spectacle. And that entire action sequence, spectacle as it was, immersive as it was, made absolutely no sense. That was a non-Euclidean action scene.

but yeah Reze is new best girl and fuck Makima.

I am so glad that I was able to watch it in theater, this movie was phenomenal!

I really liked how they integrated the intro scene in a manga style, and some manga shots like with the shark riding. MAPPA did an outstanding job and delivered everything perfectly.

This movie reminded me why I love and enjoy Chainsaw Man so much.
