The numbers they use to compare the weight of minerals like garnet versus sediment are from the periodic table?

Mineralogists can compare minerals by using "specific gravity" (Nagi mentions this when talking about placer mining in this ep). basically it defines the weight of a given mineral by finding the ratio of its mass compared to an equal volume of water. Nagi mentions that gold has specific gravity of 19, which is quite heavy (by comparison, garnet is ~3 to 4 depending on the type, according to charts)

Specific gravity charts are what ppl use which include the weight of most common minerals (not found in periodic table) as they are well documented for their properties, u can actually find these charts online for ur own practice

What a good episode.

Ruri trying to find gold so that she could be very rich learned the hard way about finding gold. First she gets trolled my pyrite, then she got rained on, which was a good thing and then she learned that gold can smush together and make a really beautiful gold blob. I wonder how much that would go for, seems really expensive but I wouldn't sell it either, just like Ruri.

Nagi places value in things Ruri doesn't even know about, this leads to some great learning moments for Ruri, enough for an episode to start and end on two completely different thoughts. Ruri is so attractive with her enthusiasm.

What satisfactory is to see this anime, gives a peace in the heart, is only kind of boring when MC starts talking and not for more, but otherwise it is perfect, the animation is very good, the feeling that the episode wants to pass too

As a geography lover I can't believe I was almost considering passing on this show earlier. But the power of Onimai director and Nagi's backside prevailed. It takes me back to the couple of general ed geology courses I took in uni. Still, I've learned a couple new things from this episode. It's just a little bittersweet for me, shows like this and Yuru Camp make me wish that I could get out there in nature quicker on my own terms.

Hey, I can boast of having found the gold of the city once. Picked up a thin beat-up 14k necklace in a parking lot once, sent it to a refinery and got $300! I only barely went for it, thought it was brass from a distance!

This anime easily has one of the best animations I've seen in my entire life. It even rivals KyoAni in many aspects. This is one of the year's peaks.
Pretend there's something flashy and cool here.

Man, Studio Bind flexing their animation in episode 2 and this anime in general. It's just so beautiful and visually beautiful. Ruri's smile and expressions are so kawaii and fun to watch. I just love watching her get up to what she does. And she got some character development in this episode too. Ah, so peak.
This and Bad Girl finna be CGDCT of the season for me.

Beautiful! It's not always about the monetary value, there's already a value to discovery and understanding how the world is.

It's really cool how minerals form their shapes and how there's a pattern to it, and that it's being done naturally without a touch of human hands.

Ruri went from greedily wanting to make money until she realized how priceless that discovery was at the end, a masterpiece of mother nature, she's been rewarded for her effort!

The visuals are just so pleasing to the eyes, having it every week is a such a treat.

This show makes me want to go out, find something to collect and just bring it back home for some reason lol

I was born and raised in California and currently live near a historic California State Park from the gold rush days. They do gold panning there and you can even gold pan in another town a few towns over which ALSO has it's OWN State Park (though not for the same thing). I used to love learning about gold and other minerals and rocks and precious gems and always wanted to go geode hunting because I thought they were really pretty, but I never did it. Kind of wondering now if I should look into it. I think my niece would like an activity like that (she's 16 and constantly complains about being bored since she came to live with me lol. She's limited in what she can do due to the reason she came to live here in the first place, but this would be something to occupy her and maybe one of her friends would find it interesting enough to want to tag along, idk). Though... geode hunting is more in the next county over, but that's like... 15 minutes away so not bad at all. The anime is making me interested in things I haven't thought about in like... 20-ish years lol.

Make Nagi's breasts, thighs and ass bigger, add close ups of her ass and crotch not in the manga. Ruri's panties not allowed. Asinine logic.

That scene during sunset was very beautiful. Not exactly my personal favorite, but probably the prettiest and most polished show this season.

The characters are still kind of whatever... They look nice, but they're just digging and dispensing information and there's just not much going on here.

The anime industry will never be the same again. They now have to censor panties because some sensitive westerners are going to be offended. What a shame.

This censorship ended up having a funny result, as it seems that Ruri doesn't wear panties, similarly to Aqua from Konosuba.
@Ryoketsu Yes, Westerners are weak, but the Japanese don't care. If you're looking for an anime with fan service, Nukitashi the Animation will premiere this season. It looks like it'll be pretty heavy, but I hope it's also funny.

Not sure if I'm onto something but i feel like they're coloring the end of episodes in the color of the episode's gems.

Episode 1 had a very reddish tint at the end for garnet

And episode 2 was very golden for gold

That has to be intentional.
@MisterSneed Wow, cool observation! Hope it's intentional indeed!

Perish the thought. That would truly be a cataclysmic turn of events; horror untold.

But in this particular case I'm not sure where the sentiment behind this comment is originating from anyway, since it is and has always been a Seinen anime series (based on a Seinen manga). Now, just as with any other demographic category, what people like in practice is more fluid and not always so strictly defined, so obviously anyone can read and watch Seinen. But it principally targets late teenage to early middle-aged men, 18 - 40.

They clearly increased Ruri's sex appeal too though. Didn't you see the bedroom scene? This is studio Bind we're talking about, they like their sexy lolis as much as their thicc women.

Ruri is funny.

I have some pyrite and it indeed has a very metallic smell. In fact i hate holding it because of this reason.

Cute how Ruri didnt want to sell the gold since she found it more valuable in other ways than monetary.

What a beautiful episode. Beyond the monetary value of an object, which is usually the first thing we care about, Nagi's words really strike a chord. His perspective is linked to something much deeper: not only the world around us, but the world we live in, which means that it inevitably connects with us as well.

Giving value to a piece of pyrite, which is worth almost nothing, because of all the circumstances that had to come together for it to end up in a place where it shouldn't be... or seeing not the money you'll make from the gold you found, but the millions of years it took to reach your hands... that's a really beautiful way to value something.

I'm very glad that someone like her is by Ruri's side, especially now that Ruri is beginning to see her own world as a treasure that she would never, in a million years, think of letting go.

For reference:

Gold has a density of 19.32 g/cm^2

The current price of gold in Japan is just under ¥16,000 per gram

That piece she found looks to be at least 10 cm^2, which would weigh 193.2 g

Meaning, what she found is worth at minimum ¥3,091,200 or $20,825

I kind of doubt she would have elected to keep it instead of selling if she knew what it was worth

Really enjoyed this episode, I wish they went more into detail about the different theories on the formation of gold nuggets, though, because it's truly a poorly understood phenomenon. While gold is considered the most noble (least reactive) of metals, evidence suggests it can mobilize under specific conditions. Nagi describes the formation of nuggets by way of cold welding, but the chemical or biochemical accumulation of gold (facilitated by certain bacteria) could have also produced the supergenic enrichment of smaller gold particles, increasing their size. Alternatively, nuggets could just result from the weathering of larger chunks of gold.

Even if you kill me, even if you kill anyone, even if you reset science… There’s always an idiot who will try anything, and the shiny monkeys will inevitably create a technological civilization.

@Budpoo That price is for 99.9% pure gold. I doubt that nugget is that pure. By it's widest part could be 2.5 - 3 cm only with a thickness of 0.5 - 1 cm only
