MARIN IS SO BEAUTIFUL IN THIS EPISODE, what a joy in my heart to see her, I really like Akira-san, she has a very cool style, looking forward to the next episodes
@pansz The nails Marin had seemed WAY too long to be practical, but I've never even applied acryllic nails, most I've done is some crossplay makeup and that was one time, it's not practical or cost efficient for me, and that's even if I just focused on that, which might be a solution, but I honestly have been out of practice on that and have been on a con sabbatical since 2023

Is Double Clutch a Slam Dunk spoof of sorts? The manga is surprisingly over 30 years old and will even be 30 years old from its conclusion next year, it was that long ago. Older than Yu Yu Hakusho, older than One Piece.

Arguably one of the series' worst episodes. I still can't believe we're focusing on the whole crossdressing plot point. I get it, the series wants to show all the aspects of cosplaying. But they've focused way too much on this particular point.

Never thought I'd say this about this show, but I was more or less checked out this episode. The first half of the episode was nothing but glazing for the femboy. The second half felt as though nothing happened either, except for the reveal at Juju is back.

When Marin said she was going to meet up with Femboy McGee, as soon as the camera cut to Gojo's phone with a photo of Akira, I knew instantly that it would be a woman. It mirrors the whole gender thing they're doing with the femboy. Akira herself is really pretty, but the whole weird thing she has going on with Marin grew old after a few minutes. We were given no context of what her issue is, but I can assume it's likely she's a fan of Marin's.

  • So we got a misunderstanding or love polygon-in-the-making with Akira? Or is she just an ordinary fangirl?
  • It's notable that this season has seen our couple with college cosplayers rather than high school ones.
  • I've been waiting for our cosplaying-tsundere to make her return.
@KM_31 Wakana sounds like a girl's name and Akira like a boy's, so there's confusion on both their parts with that, but if they share particular aesthetics and interests, there's certainly a possible spark that people could see

Just a guess, but Aoi could be a consultant for the mangaka, like Kurare for Dr. Stone (and I think something else more recently?)

I'm not sure what to make of season 2. There were no notable romcom moments between Marin and Gojou. The new episodes try everything to make Marin seem less attractive. All the cosplay elements were informative, but also really lame. There have also been few good comedy elements so far.

It's good that Gojou is finding his place and making new friends, but it seems so undeserved. It goes from 0 to 100. Everyone loves him, no one is jealous. A few problems at the beginning and a slower build-up would have made this more realistic.

Currently, it's a romcom without romance or comedy. It's been replaced by gender issues and makeup tips. I don't want to badmouth the season, but it lacks tension and chemistry between Marin and Gojou.
@Bandulf This whole series, first and foremost, is about cosplay and otaku culture. The author is a hardcore cosplaying fan and she wanted to show the experiences she had while learning about cosplay in manga form, and wanted to convey other messages like "always be yourself". Obviously a manga just about cosplay wouldn't sell that well so she had to add a story and romcom elements to it. A lot of people including me picked this series up because Marin is hot, or because they want to read a cute romcom, but harsh reality becomes clearer as you read/watch it, especially in parts we are at right now (Coffin cosplay arc). This is a cosplaying manga, and there are romcom elements every once in a while to keep us from being bored. Unfortunately we are gonna be seeing A LOT OF cosplaying from now on.

@AnimadoHAHA Western values also don't necessarily treat crossdressing as wrong, pathologizing it is fairly new (along with complaining about it as if children seeing it means they'll just change like they're a weird Ditto Pokemon), it was more often just regarded as against ethics. Shakespeare was done with drag, guys playing women, since women weren't allowed to perform in Victorian times as I recall. And crossplay in terms of theater has other manifestations, like drag in many forms, some evolving into a cultural style all their own, like Takarazuka for dansou

@takkun_ What I noticed in this episode is that they might have ran out of budget or something. The animation was much more stiff and more like a regular seasonal anime. Especially compared to the previous episodes where everything were much more dynamic and vivid. Maybe because this episode was always gonna be like a filler episode so they just wanted to be done with it. I remember completely spacing out in these parts while reading the manga. I know this is gonna be like a setup to a new sub-arc but the way the mangaka handled it was very bad.

@rickjdraws If you're upset about Gojo thinking that maybe gender doesn't matter and people can use the first person pronouns they prefer, then you both misunderstand the angle of the series, it's not gender critical tripe, plus Japanese pronouns aren't strictly gendered by the same stroke that English insisted upon based on conflating gender with sex

Which Japanese speakers would at least have some support for the argument at face value, the kanji for sex is also used for gender, not sure there's anything approximating the distinction English has that goes back to Latin, genus and sexus as roots for gender and sex, which do have distinct meanings that at best overlap on a slight Venn diagram

I was just thinking about it being a shame Juju/Sajuna hasn’t showed up this season, but hey there she is! This nun cosplay is about to go hard af, very excited to see it, although the Akira thing is very weird, clearly Marin has got to her just by being present and her friends know about it but aren’t saying anything, is she a really big fan or something else? Guess that’ll get addressed eventually but it was a bit annoying here, I kept thinking are they gonna get on with this or what lol.

Other than that, this was just a really fun cosplay event episode, featuring the additions of some new characters like Miyako and Akira, I actually called Akira was a girl before the reveal so I’m kinda proud of that lol, her interaction with Gojo was wholesome, funny how they both thought the other was the opposite gender. And we also got to see Amane again (I was calling him Himeno before but the show is going with Amane so I will too lol), his cosplay was yet another beautiful idol character, can’t get over how good he looks cosplaying girls still, I know he puts a lot of work into looking that good but it’s still amazing, I’m also weak to blue haired waifus so this was a critical hit lol. Ngl tho, I wasn’t super into the information segments it cut away to a few times, I didn’t need to be told angles change how things look and where to party at with a whole separate cutaway complete with its own cute intro lol, but really it wasn’t a big deal, I don’t mind a cute babe teaching me things even if I already knew them.

Did I miss something about Akira? So she and Sazaki have a history which we don't know about? And her initial reaction to Marin? Maybe from the adverts Marin was depicted in? This episode left me a bit confused to be honest. I liked the background information and the break up of gender stereotypes but it felt somehow like I skipped an episode after Marin and Gojo tested the new camera in the park.

@KM_31 YEah, even her initial reaction feels strongly like a fan meeting their idol and the pattern is probably in other series as well, someone super serious, but will geek out over something particular, though it's often a woman, so the seriousness is almost more an ice queen than some stone faced guy like Golgo 13 who'd keep the same expression even when having sex

Amane cosplay just looks so pretty, it really wanna awaken something in you lol. Forgot about Akira and Gojo both misunderstood opposites gender. She's one of the best characters of the series. Her and Marin relation is fun to watch as..

Miyako sneaked her work frustration in between glazing dolls was wild.
The cosplay group is so much better than their non chara school friends (except Nowa).

Juju & Shinju will be back soon..
I am excited to see the nun arc getting animated. It's so good. Huge improvement from cringe fest Rei sama arc.

Okay, I don’t have anything against femboys, tomboys, or whatever, but my god, this is like the third plotline this season revolving around them. Is there really nothing else interesting we can do with cosplay at this point lol. And yeah, I guess at least something is here to spice things up, finally introducing a proper love rival after a good twenty episodes!

... Buuuut then I remember that we’re on episode twenty, and Goujou probably still doesn’t even know that a boy and a girl can fall in love with each other. That’s where his character development is at. But yeah, this episode, especially near the end. made me realize something: people who do cosplay are seriously... weird in the head. Did find it funny though that Akira just went back to being a background character after literally being introduced lmao.

But hey, at least we got Juju back at the end! Also, anything with Marin and her whole crew this episode was totally boring. Sorry, not sorry.

Just as spoiler: Don't get too excited about Akira being a "romantic rival". For Gojo and Marin. In that aspect she was one of the disappointments of the manga 😅.

I forgot to mention this last week. With the prevalence of phone cameras it was thought that actual cameras would be phased out. Kodak even went bankrupt trying to hold on the commercial film market. But while the low end digital cameras are little better than what you find on smartphones these days, the same cannot be said for cameras priced in the thousands.

I wonder what Akira's problem with Marin is?

@Embient the first two episodes looked a little off, but they quickly corrected whatever issue that was and everything is perfect now :)

@Kipo0007 Marin is like a superfan, other photographers be like, that is a cute looking character. But Marin shows a deep appreciation for the character and notices all the little details the cosplayer probably agonized over for hours to get right.

An enjoyable episode to watch.
Seeing someone look so different from their original self through cosplay feels like watching living art.

There are many misunderstandings about gender in this episode, and I find that funny.

Oh, and why does Akira seem flustered whenever Marine is around? Does she like Marine?
Hmm, a girl liking another girl 😑

@Yeetious Your last line is not true at all, we just got over the most cosplay heavy part of the Manga with this episode, now the romance will take the focus again in the next episodes until the end of this season and the last Manga arc that should be adapted in season 3 (assuming there's one) is heavy on the romance too.

Not saying Cosplay trivia and infos will completely disappear don't get me wrong but saying we will keep seeing episodes as heavy on cosplay as this one is misinfo for anime-only.

Season 2 is vastly inferior to season 1, i been watching the episodes so far because i loved season 1 but i feel absolutely nothing during or after watching an episode in season 2.
The episodes are not really memorable either, i liked the first episode the one with Nowa singing and her blurting out the question, Gojo and his introspection. But everything else has just been a forgettable watch.

This episode as well, i feel like i watched nothing. i don't even get that feeling of 'can't wait for next episode', it's all just 'meh, ok, i watched an episode'.
