Don't know about the others but I really love this monster playing the role of Hikaru, Yoshiki's friend. I mean every humans do have monsters within, just not in physical form.
Also a toast to Yoshiki's future plan; the sound of it is music to my ears. 🔥

Got some backstory so we can kind of sort of piece things together but dang, the emotional parts of this story are all messed up.

He loved his friend. But Hikaru is dead. And new Hikaru has caught feelings for him. That scene was disturbing, IDK what to make of it. At the end I think he's catching feelings for New Hikaru too.

IDK what is going to happen but I'm so invested in this right now.

Man, you know shit has turned serious the moment Yoshiki doesn't laugh at Hikaru's goofy faces.

Superb episode with some excellent direction once again. Really invested in the story now that Yoshiki has decided to accept this new Hikaru in his life. Looking forward to seeing what problems that may bring.

Okay, summarizing to see if I'm properly getting the underlying message beyond the literal interpretation: Nonuki represents Hikaru coming out as gay to his best friend (who he also has feelings for) and the story is representative of Yoshiki coming to terms with that, dealing with the internal homophobia he probably grew up with given they live in a small rural town, as well as slowly realizing he might have similar repressed feelings of his own. This episode represented Yoshiki initially finally reacting and rejecting Hikaru as a person (lamenting what he sees as losing of the friendship they had), Hikaru being overwhelmingly upset by this and SAing Yoshiki, and then later Yoshiki accepting that he can never view Hikaru the same as he used to, but that he still wanted him in his life regardless.

Loved the episode, although it was a bit confusing. Honestly, I don't even know anymore if Hikaru is good or bad. I can't tell if Yoshiki is secretly planning his downfall behind the scenes, or if he's actually starting to grow fond of him. I have no idea what's going on or who's on whose side anymore.

Guys, is it gay subtext when it's in all caps?

Yoshiki feeling very conflicted about Hikaru right now. He should be afraid of him, but he also loves him.

Asaka Yokoyama’s SB really shows Hikaru’s breakdown well. His identity crisis and obsession turn into horror, and it fits the show perfectly. Most of the big moments are in the second half, but the slow start helps build it up. The repeated summer shots show how anxious Yoshiki is feeling.

All the episodes show this kind of horror, but this one stands out. It’s not just about ghosts, it’s about the town, the people, and how they act. Yokoyama and the team also find smart ways to show scenes from the manga, even if they can’t match the drawings exactly. One panel of Yoshiki melting becomes a cool, longer scene here.

Important question: When is Yoshiki getting a haircut?

The pacing of this anime is not what i expect, he messaged that woman this early on...

"So that's what this is about. You're mad I ain't the real Hikaru" no shit!

Still think episode 2 was the best one.

@amentet i don't think it's meant to represent SA, that would be dark.

Well, grief is complicated, especially when you are the only one aware that the person you love is dead and everyone else carries on like normal. The presence of the monster prevents Yoshiki from being able to "properly" and openly grieve Hikaru, but in some ways he doesn't want to move on.

It is also mentioned this episode that Hikaru was the only kid in the village the same age as him and they spent their whole lives together. Yoshiki is afraid of being left alone. Maybe that is part of the reason why he empathises with the monster so easily, he is also lonely. I guess it is a bit selfish to accept the monster, but I don't find it that ridiculous. I think that Yoshiki's though process, while messy, is kinda understandable.

As for the "probably killed" part, Yoshiki did confront Hikaru about it in ep1. The monster said that he didn't do it and that Hikaru was already dying. Whether Yoshiki choosing to accept that is justified or just denial is unclear at this point.

Yoshiki has been my fav character since i read the manga, but from the anime i can't help but feel myself loving Hikaru more. i love both of them though...aAAAAGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. i have said this before and i'll say it again, the color pallette of this anime is so comforting that i can't, but the themes it has just....well. loved the episode, especially the end scene where Yoshiki caresses Hikaru's cheeks, wipes his tear with his thumb and says, " You're more of a brat than Hikaru ever was. " with that LOVESICK, ADORING AND ADMIRING look on his pretty pretty face and warmth in those eyes. damnnnnnnnnnn cn't wait for the next ep

Ahhh, another amazing episode that had me all tensed up throughout all 23 minutes.
This anime is doing a great job at making you feel unconfortable, uneasy and suspicious at everything.
And the direction of the scenes is just incredible. Look at the conversation between Yoshiki and that lady from the last 2 episodes, the different shots, the contrast between their talk/feelings with the cafe they were, incredible.

Talking about that, we get to know that Lady reached out to Yoshiki, to help him in this situation, since she also went through the same, with her husband. However, she doesn't really give us much details, she just said it seemed her husband, but it gave their son a wound that would never heal (I wonder if it's a physical or a psycological wound). I suppose we are getting more from her in the next episodes, since she actually appears quite a lot in the opening.

This episode really focused on giving us more info about the characters. We also get to finally see Hikaru (Monster) leaving in his house, we also get to see his mother, and we discover that his dad actually died shortly after the moment from the flashback of the beginning of the episode (so while Hikaru and Yoshiki were kids). Interestingly, Hikaru's father died in the same mountain, around the same time in the year, as Hikaru, which might really suggest that they both died of the same cause (maybe some ritual or pact that went wrong?).

What surprised me the most in this episode was the characterization of this Monster Hikaru. That scene with it and Yoshiki at the school was really intense, and you end up worrying about Yoshiki's safety, but by the end of the episode, I ended up feeling sorry for Monster Hikaru, as it just seemed lonely, and regreted being violent with Yoshiki, since it really just wants to be with Yoshiki, as it said, it doesn't care about who Yoshiki talks to or does, Monster Hikaru just doesn't want Yoshiki to hate it.
Like, we all know how creepy it is, with how it just possessing a body from a deceased person, how it's implied it was the cause of the death from the old lady of episode 1 (although I'm having my doubts now), and how it literally said in the 1st episode it would kill Yoshiki if he just didn't continue living his life with "Hikaru" as normal.
Like, wow, they really made me feel bad for it, and they gave it actual human feelings. Now I just wonder if it's really theirs or just Hikaru's feelings.
We got that weird flashbacks too, to that woman with a baby, not really sure what that is, maybe it's related with the origin of Monster Hikaru? I don't know, it was giving me Attack on Titan vibes.

But I have to say the saddest part of the episode was right at the beginning, when Monster Hikaru thanked Yoshiki for being there with him, just chillin', and Yoshiki asked why he said that out of nowhere, and it just replied that it wanted Yoshiki to know it's true feelings, and then Yoshiki just thinks "I should have done the same", implying he should have confessed to Hikaru his true feelings while he was still alive :(

This episode really shows how Yoshiki is moving on from Denial, and it's starting to assimilate that Hikaru is dead. Even if by the end he may be swayed again by the temptation of using this Monster Hikaru as a replacement, even the way Yoshiki is treating it is already different.

Once again, this episode with the symbolism, this episode is with the withering of Sunflowers, that are linked to Hikaru, since his house used to have them. It does seem to indicate that Yoshiki is assimilating Hikaru's death, but I'm not sure if that's only it.

On a side note, I found it really funny when the anime had like 2 seconds of CGI students, when they were showing the school, because it was just so random, I didn't notice its use anywhere else, and the CGI was decent, but I don't know, it was just so random, and only for 2 seconds, that I just found it funny, without taking anything away from the episode!

This anime is by far my favorite this season (from the ones I'm watching)! I love how they always find a way to surprise us. This time around, the episode ended up on a much different note than the other 2, with a more dramatic tone, and focusing on the characterization of Monster Hikaru, while the other 2 episodes ended on a creppier note.

Can't wait for the next episode! Do we really need to wait a whole week to get it?

love that review! You described my feelings and favourite parts. Thank u. Its my fav anime of this season too ♡ Im so excited for next episode !Σ(×_×;)!

And in another way, the entity also understands that he’s not Hikaru, that he’s taking over a body that doesn’t truly belong to him. He feels guilty about it, but still wants to live that life. That duality is so well developed.

And this part was really interesting, because it makes you start thinking that this "Monster" might actually have human feelings too, and maybe it's being truthful about what he feels about living this life of a human (and not an excuse for some masterplan of killing humans)

We have got 3 episode of a truly masterpiece imo and i can't wait the next episode!

I kinda feel like you shouldn't get too ''attached'' to Hikaru, 'cause he is some kind of demon/possessed vessel but i can't help myself liking Hikaru he is a great character.
At the same time i feel bad for Yoshiki, 'cause you can see how hard he is trying to adapt, that Hikaru is really gone, but can't give up on Hikaru 'cause he really is just like a brat, clinging to his mom.. xD

I knew this episode would start with the watermelon flashback! lol Adaptations tend to bring mid-chapter flashbacks right to the start of the episode to build anticipation.

I don't like Hikaru's child voice. It makes him sound like a 50 year-old woman! lol

I like the way they seem to have some kind of motif or metaphor every episode. Episode 2 had cicadas and chicken, and this one had sunflowers. I loved the way the sunflowers all died, and then immediately went back to normal like nothing was wrong. It's nice seeing directors trying to explain the characters with their own metaphors; it makes it feel like they understand the story.

This episode as well removed the chaotic side of Kohei, Hikaru's dad. I wanted to see him mildly panic when he sees the kids crying.

"hikaru" eating the watermelon was so freaking adorableee!!!

So, things to note: Kohei is dead, so is Hikaru, and both died around the same time in the same mountain. We have also learnt that Hikaru's family has a ritual they perform, which has now failed. The family members seem to carry a tiny human head that wards off spirits.

I kind of noticed something that I didn't pay much attention to when read the manga: When "Hikaru" easily reveals his deep feelings, Yoshiki wishes he could also have been as direct. Damn, that little stab of regret he's always carrying around.

The rain was so beautiful. And, I was so happy with the way they animated the scene of Yoshiki melting; they even added their own twist!

Very important world-building information revealed: "Hikaru"'s insides feel good. And touching them triggers some sort of memory. Was it Hikaru that Yoshiki saw?

I was wondering why the full version of the ED hadn't released last week. Now I get it! They wanted it to be here first!

Kurebayashi is a nice person. She's very compassionate, and doesn't blame Yoshiki. And, her late husband seems to have come back like Hikaru.

Why did the anime cut the part where Kurebayashi thought Yoshiki was talking about his girlfriend returning? It was a moment of calm and humour in a stressful situation.

The anime also cut out "Hikaru"'s dream scene, which bothers me. Instead, they took elements of the dream and mixed it with him . . . well . . . "ejaculating" his dorodoro thing.

Episode conclusion: "Hikaru" behaves like a lonely kid who knows nothing, and he needs to be taught how to behave. Knowing the character is a gay metaphor, I really think Yoshiki reached the wrong conclusion!! lol

Yeah, I kinda wish they left than in fully as well. Especially the part with the mirror. I'm pretty sure that was the first scene fully from Hikaru's perspective (there was part of the forest scene before but it was short). It probably got cut for time, but maybe they are also trying to make Hikaru's nature even more ambiguous for now.

I've thought of a theory after that kinda flashback of seeing Hikaru holding Yoshiki. There's also that legend Hikaru's father told him about them having to present their wives to Nounuki or else Nounuki would take them for him or something like that. But what if Hikaru went to the mountain to present Yoshiki as his "wife"? But things went wrong and Nounuki indeed got Hikaru's wife.

That's my interpretation too! And it would explain why Monster Hikaru is so clingy with Yoshiki - it views him as belonging to it. I think that Hikaru might have known that Yoshiki couldn't be his "wife" (because marriage gives immunity and they can't get married) and is not immune to the demon/god so Hikaru decided to sacrifice himself instead. In the flashbacks Hikaru seemed to give hints to Yoshiki that he reciprocates his feelings because he knew they couldn't be together and wanted Yoshiki to know his feeling for him before he's gone.

Beautiful direction in this episode.

The ending was very hopeful and uplifting: the sunny mood and the nostalgic, redemptive ED conveyed a comforting feeling. But the shot of the wilted flowers at the end? That was definitely not just symbolic nonsense. I'm convinced that ignoring the woman's warning will have dire consequences. This anime isn't going to be happy for long. But there is no turning back now with Yoshiki's decision.

As always, emotions get tangled up in all of this. And I don't blame Yoshiki: he's known Hikaru since childhood, and seeing someone who looks exactly like his dead friend must be deeply confusing and painful. Honestly, it might be even more dangerous to abandon Hikaru in his current state.

And yes... their bond is strangely beautiful. There's something deeply touching about Yoshiki's attachment to a supernatural entity, oddly enough.

This episode was intense! The mystery aspect was put aside in favor of the relational drama. I enjoyed the depth this lent to the Yoshiki/Hikaru relationship.

Yoshiki's struggle of missing his actual friend, but also enjoying the company of what replaced him is relatable. The "kimochi" scene was something else, huh?!

Also, I really liked that final exchange between the two of them in Hikaru's room. I thought it was sweet. I'm really excited to see how it'll turn out!

Now it is possible that yoshiki may start to not only have an understanding simpathy for the monster but also grow to accept the monster itself, instead of seeing him as hikaru or as just a freaky monster. The monster tried to viscerally connect with yoshiki, even in a "dangerous"-like way in regards to being a threat but since the monster has feelings for yoshiki it only served as a way for yoshiki to feel a bit of what is going on with the monster's feelings and even a curious scene played out. Another damm good episode with great visuals, the aesthetics never cease to amaze. Tbh the monster seems very sympathetic so far, so it is not far fetched that he indeed would be satisfied with yoshiki's acceptance, that would be good for yoshiki too since the true hikaru is gone and it may help him cope or get over it in a way... though that would still be hard since the monster is in the body of hikaru in every way.

Someone could put some edits of this anime in the future, maybe when it is completed (this season atleast) in some music playlists (chill ones especially) given how atmospheric it all feels just to look at both in pic and even in gif. Would work

Is Yoshiki being manipulated by the monster wearing Hikaru's skin or does it really love him? Or is it that Yoshiki is projecting his feeling for Hikaru on the monster out of regret for not telling him how he felt? And what's more dangerous, to be used by a monster or for that monster to really be in love with you and for it to act that love out in a monstrous fashion? Scary stuff!

This creepypasta yaoi anime is getting boring by each episode.
@-_Dread_- This is not a yaoi anime. Yaoi is sex between two men, there are no sex in the manga. They do not even get together. The manga focus on the body horror part and the mystery (especially the village past) if you actually read it, don't want to spoil it though. Also, just because the MC has a subtle romantic feelings for his childhood bestie who are the same gender as him, doesn't mean that they get together or even worse, has sex. Also, the MC is a human, and his current childhood bestie is not a thing.

@noiden_owl I'm afraid you took my comment too seriously...
If you have time to think of a beautiful end, then live beautifully until the end.
