I don't think the English VAs are bad, but this dub is really flat. Some of the characters sound really robotic and remind me of Data from Star Trek in their unnatural lack of contractions. A few of the VAs did a pretty good job, but overall, everyone sounds bored. I'll rewatch with the Japanese VAs later and compare them.

On the show itself, the animation was pretty good, but I think with the amount of action here, I wish they had the budget for more frames. I like what little story we got so far and the music was great. Smooth action and Jazz still work for me. Seems odd to have the futuristic vehicles all sounding like internal combustion engines still.

Cowboy Bebop is still one of my absolute all-time favorites (and I love the English cast). So far, Lazarus is not reaching that level, but they've got me interested. I'll keep watching.

It was a fun watch, however I think it personally misses the Watanabe magic every one of his series has for a first episode. Dunno about people complaining about the dub however some shots looked choppy will watch again because I think Watanabe and his team is gonna give me a good time
EDIT: ok i rewatched some of the dub I see what they see however going to give it episode 2

I wonder if the music is at fault. It sorta comes off as.... flat.

Nothing against Jazz but time and place. If it's on the whole time and at the same tome without highs or lows then it just brings the whole thing down.

@cvillano "couple of nods", LOL. This anime lacks any own identity, it just feels like a "remember Cowboy Bebop?"
@MyllerPhiem yeah you're delusional if you think this is anything like Cowboy Bebop. Oh its got a jazzy score during the prison escape! Totally Cowboy Bebop - room temperature IQ idiots like you

It’s hard for me to root for anyone yet—especially someone with an 888-year prison sentence (what’s the backstory?). I enjoyed the parkour, but the chase scene felt too drawn out. That said, it did allow for introducing all the characters. Maybe not my cup of tea, but... I’m still looking forward to the second episode.

Had to watch on animesuge to get Jap dub with Eng sub and though actual quality isn't great (kinda sounds like a camera recording?), I'm hyped for the show!

Really stupid plot thus far. Humanity does not deserve to live, and I'm killing literally everyone! Unless you find me, in which case I'll arbitrarily change my mind. I'll get you out of prison! Nope, I'll just cause a massive situation by breaking out instead of walking out because I'm THAT GUY. I hope it gets better. The visuals and music are great, but the story isn't hooking me at all.

It blows my mind seeing that Bonobo is part of the music for this one.. I don't know all his music but I can vividly remember listening to "black sands" many many years ago lol.

The plot has got me a bit invested, the music has got me jamming out, and the art style and animation are great so far. I hope the side characters are just as interesting as our mc.

Also grateful to find the Japanese version (it's simply a must for me, eng dubs just don't sound right to me anymore)

This is a random bit, but I think the amount of parkour animation/scenes will top Bubble. Also, around timestamp 16:25, this wall climb & cat to cat are 100% spot on parkour techniques!!! Nice detail imo

Respectfully ofc

Its definitely a wait for the sub angle.
Any other recent Toonami/western anime situations, to use as a precedent, for the official english subtitle release?
@Slick_Pickle it feels like they're tripling down on the misinformation about Bebop's dub to try to replicate another hit (Watanabes only one)

@Old_School_Akira has there ever been a more blatant media campaign for "please care about this series you liked this other series right guys remember bebop right guys?"

What a great start. I already love the premise, and the action is well choreographed just as expected from John Wick's director.
And the music being fantastic is just the cherry on top with Watanabe's production!
I also noticed that this anime has a lot of diversity in the types of people. Something I noticed that I have almost never seen in any anime, were Muslim women. Quite interesting to see that representation, as I see them all the time where I come from.

This show got me thinking though, I think it has been answered somewhere before but, why is original anime made if the anime industry was made to advertise manga and merchandise?

And another thing this show got me thinking was to never take a popular drug that seems too good to be true O_O
Wonder what Mr.Skinner is hiding under.

Overall, a great episode. Would love to see this show further. Excited to see the opening in the next episode!

Pretty fun to watch. The sense of urgency (x days left) makes it interesting - I want to know more. The secret team gives bit of "High Card"-vibes (they had a small secret group as well ... in a modern-like setting). The action and music are nice and I'm looking forward to see more of the characters. Wondering if they just have extreme abilities (physically) for the show so it looks nice - of if there is actually a reason. At least the older dude found it weird that the guy that escaped from the prison jumped down there. So not everything seems "normal" there. Lol.

Setting/plot seems okay - nothing special and I guess it won't be too good at the end. (Japanese often have too much and too weird plot twists.) But with MAPPA there are hops - usually liked stuff they made when the plot was original (adaptions I liked the stuff they chose less).

Seems to be set in the US (prison design and the white house in the news) - though the names of the cities are different. Odd that at that train station though ... they used names of German cities in the background lol. Though the city had a fictional name + all signs in the setting were English (US). I guess they did not want to have it empty or usnig some unreadable stuff ... and just randomly copied something from real train stations.

Berlin-Spandau, Hamburg Hbf (Hbf = Hauptbahnhof - the central railwaystation, biggest in a city with multiple ones), Kiel Hbf ... sounds all like the north east of Germany. (Neustadt exists multiple times though but the "(H") must mean a northeastern one as well. Also a polish sounding name. North east is close to Poland.) Maybe they took this from Berlin Hbf - since it mentions a station of another part of there (Spandau).

The dialog is so bad :|. The english dub is unwatchable. Between the deliveries and incredibly awkward lines... and slowing down to try and match... I can't do it. It's like FFX in English kekw. Nah this is an L. Really too bad they didn't release the Japanese dialog.

Best chase scene in anime I've ever seen honestly, well done to Mappa lol...

That "29 days left" thing is interesting too, maybe the number of episodes left to watch? Or the amount of days the story will last for.

Looks great so far.

The voice acting is absolutely abysmal. Its almost impressive how overhyped this show was to have such bad/robotic line delivery.

Shinichiro Watanabe back at it again with another banger.

The premise reminds me a bit of Eugenic from Tynion's Apocalypse Trilogy.

I love that escaping from authorities is just Axel's hobby. I wonder where it's set, because I have a hard time believing it's America with all the advanced trains and the lack of cops shooting recklessly.

It seems pretty good, nothing will ever top Bebop but im at least interested to see where it goes. I unfortunately find parkour like in the first episode dumb when used in media, there was that few years where every action movie had parkour sequences and it just became really corny.

Story seems interesting, Im keeping my expectations realistic though.

the visuals and action was pretty good as expected. the jazzy ost during the escape bored me though. the chick reminds me of fujiko mine. was a good, not as good as i was hoping but i'm still putting my faith in this. i just need it to be better than cowboy bebop, and it can do that. hopefully doesn't follow an episodic structure either.

That was terrible like all other AS originals. Generic everything, dub, character design, plot, colors, shouldn’t have wasted the time. Whose idea is it to keep doing this? Just let Japanime be Japanime, give them some budget and get out of the damn way, stop trying to write stuff for them. My god.

I’d rather watch a cheap isekai than this, give me any seasonal. There’s nothing creative here, just dumb gray and ugly.

I really want to like this anime but I can't get past the dumb premise of the whole world taking a cure-all that can mutate into poison and somehow slipped through the scrutiny of whatever lab and factories are mass producing them. It also relies heavily on the premise that somehow the majority of humans took the pills at roughly the same time. As we have seen with covid vaccines, even with worldwide effort distributing and making sure everyone took it was a huge challenge. Many people had to wait months if not a year just to get one. Also equally dumb is how someone can escape a prison just by doing some acrobatics. They literally had to make the guards extremely dumb and incompetent just to make the character looked good, which is not a good thing at all if they're already starting with such a low hanging fruit.

What a waste of animation resources.. then again I could probably say the same for the gazillion trash isekais produced every season. At least this one put some effort into telling something.. maybe not a story but something.

damn! that was... whew... :O one of the best 1st episodes of anime i think i've seen in 30+ years.

it was like MAPPA grabbed GoHands' crazy whackafreakindoodledoo camera angle flips/rotations/panning... and improved upon it!

it was pretty, awesome soundtrack, premise was kickazz, storytelling not just dialogue but visually told/shown, the technical/mecha/back n foregrounds/vehicles work was a smidge TOO CGA but definitely LOVELY and kinda-sorta well blended but in places too obvious, and the fight choreography was awesome!

definitely an entertaining 1st ep. they've hooked me hard with this one! :D
just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.
