So, for this final episode of the 1st part of Sakamoto Days, we get the resolution of the casino situation.
Overall, seeing the characters just trying their best in the games, while using their skills was quite amusing to watch.
We also saw Wutang's backstory and him just destroying the others in the games. He actually was able to win against Sakamoto in that final game, if Sakamoto didn't cheated xD
We now know why Wutang admires Lu so much, she was the only one that believed in him, and appreciated his own skills (in this case, his intelligence).
The Mafia didn't want to play Wutang's games anymore, so they go against his orders, and decide to eliminate him, alongside Sakamoto and the others. With the help of Sakamoto and his bluff, Wutang is able to escape that situation.
Shin was also a bit sidelined here, it's actually interesting Wutang was able to oversaturate Shin's mind reading abillities. But at the same time, Shin's mind reading abillities have been nulified so many times in the show already, that you start to question why they added them. We're only in episode 11, and Shin wasn't able to use them a bunch of times already.
After that we get introduced what I suppose is going to be the arc that is going to be adapted in the 2nd part of Sakamoto Days, and that 4 death row prisionors that escape with the help of Slur, and are now sent to kill the members of The Order (including Sakamoto). They do seem really dangerous. I wonder how our team is going to deal with them, and if The Order is going to take care of some of them. But I was surprised to how graphic the anime actually was with some of the deaths here.
Also, the funniest part of the episode was just Wutang talking about how the death row prisinors are out there, killing people in Japan, while proceeding with the payment of the groceries of the old lady, and even asking if she wanted a bag.
This begs the question, is Wutang going to continue to work at Sakamoto's, or was it just 1 time thing, and if it was, why he went to work there for a day? If he's going to continue working there, it seems that he is going to fill the "brain" role in the group, that so far was still free. I wouldn't mind if he became part of the main cast, I actually liked Wutang.
So, with the end of this 1st part of Sakamoto Days, I have to say that, besides all its flaws, it's actually a really enjoyable anime. It has a certain vibe, that just makes it really amusing to watch, and the cast of characters, for the most part, are really likeable (as I said previously, I really like Shin character, for example). I actually was never bored with the anime, and if I'm having a good time, than the anime is good.
At the same time, the show does have a lot of flaws. The biggest for me are the story, artstyle and animation. The story, while it surprised me at first, seems to be already getting repetitive, and the way the anime utilizes the characters makes me worry about Lu, Heisuke and Wutang going foward. Also, the anime sometimes sacrifices the story just for the comedic side. There are a lot of stuff that just doesn't make sense, but you end up ignoring that towards the end of the anime (like how Sakamoto isn't killing anyone, while literally breaking their necks). Because of this, I can't really connect that much to it and the characters, even if they are likeable. An example was the lab arc, where Shin's childhood was explored, but it had such a poor resolution. Or they made Shin a psychic, just to make him unable to use his mind reading abillities for the most part.
I think I don't have to explain the animation part. Since Sakamoto Days isn't really an anime focused on storytelling, then it has to compensate in the action, but the animation was ok at best, which ends up taking away the fun many times.
Finally, I still don't like the artstyle they chose for the anime. Sure, I got used to it, but unlike other anime, where I grew to actually love the artstyle (like last season's "Yakusa Fiance"), in Sakamoto Days this artstyle just feels off, making it odd to look at the anime sometimes, I don't particularly have any pretty screenshot from this anime (for example. the part where they show the city, when Lu and Wutang were talking when they were little could make a pretty screenshot, but the artstyle just makes it a ok scene).
So, although this anime has even a similar vibe to Spy Family, an anime that I really enjoy, it just fails in these 3 points, and that's why I don't enjoy this anime more.
So, for me, Sakamoto Days is a simple 7/10 for me. It has a lot of flaws as I mentioned, but it is a fun anime to watch, and was great to pass the time for the past weeks, and I wouldn't mind having to rewatch this if it was needed.
To end this post, I just wonder why they created a whole new ending for episode 7, and then never used it ever again. Like, is that the 2nd cour's ending, and they accidentaly put it in the end of episode 7? It's still so random, because that episode doesn't focus that much on The Order even, only 2 characters appeared in the end. |
