Not going to lie, I like the art style of the anime so far.

Some characters making their appearances includes Dizzy, Sin Kiske, Johnny, and of course Sol. Dizzy has the best look so far imo. I think this is a fine start so far and there's small windows of comedy added in. Character chemistry among the cast seems fine too. Episode also showed a glimpse of what combat is like. Obviously a lot of setup already but I'm intrigued.

An interesting art style—I loved it. The premise is intriguing, especially with the mix of mecha and magic concepts.

Sin seems like an interesting character; it’d be fun with him as the MC.

I don’t care what kind of past Unika had with the Gears—killing someone who lives peacefully in human society and trying to disrupt that is just unacceptable. I don’t like her or her motives, plain and simple.

Also, Baiken has some great assets—no denying that.

Nice, so many hot buff guys. Though I always wondering who are the equivalent of Ryu and Ken or Kazuya and Jin in this series, could it be Sol and Ky or Sol and Sin, I can't decide.

My history with the GG fighting games and this show's unique style are nowhere near enough to save it for me. This is a mess. It reminds me of those Chinese CG-slop shows with hundreds of ten-minute-long episodes.

Looks like mashed up game cut-scenes peppered with exposition dump. To make it worse MC is one of the worst character tropes, so it all makes it completely unwatchable.

Okay, finally it's time for me to talk about my Guilty Gear expertise.
First of all, this was entirely made for Guilty Gear fans, you SHOULD NOT WATCH THIS WITHOUT ANY GUILTY GEAR KNOWLEDGE BECAUSE IT IS UNCOMPREHENSIBLE. I'm talking about 27 years of lore since 1998 including a dozen of games, audio books, CD dramas and a fucking pachinko machine.
That said, my first complaint about this show is that it looks absolutely terrible. The directing is horrendous, 3D models look fine from close but are a mess of polygons from afar, there are speedlines everywhere, so many still frames because they have no idea what to animate, there is a total absence of scenery and it looks several time worse than Xrd story mode.
Now onto the writing, it's catastrophical, every single line feel like exposition and seem written by machines. It's even worse than I thought because they did the exact mistake they shouldn't have done, trying to explain the story to newcomers.
Now onto the lore, this takes place after Strive story mode, apparent by the fact Sol doesn't wear his signature headband after his Gear powers were removed by Asuka at the end of Strive's story. Even more obvious he lives with Jack0 in a random shed which is shown in Strive epilogue.
Let me list EVERYTHING that doesn't make sense within GG's cannon:
-Gear origin is resumed with barebones knowledge. Gears were created by That Man (Asuka) for the Gear project, they turned against humanity when Justice (1st commander class Gear) declared war on her creators right after he activation, destroyed all of Japan and mind controlled every gear on the planet to be under her command. This is also very brief summary because I'm omitting to mention the Universal will role in all of this.
The sole problem is this whole early exposition is meaningless for people already aware of GG's lore because it lacks critical informations we already know of and it is also pointless in an attempt to resume the story to newcomers because it doesn't explain who created the gears and why they attacked mankind, it's just confusing exposition.
-Once again 0 mention of Justice but also 0 mention of Kliff, the reason the Crusades ended after him, Sol and the Holy Order sealed Justice.
-Total omission of The Missing Link, summary skips it straight into GGX, the second game.
-Now that's some real heavy disparities with GG's cannon, Ky's meeting with Dizzy. I will not mention the whole story of Dizzy, because it's way longer and it includes Faust, Venom, Testament, Josephine, too many fucking characters, so let's stay basic.
The Grove doesn't look like that but it doesn't matter, what matters is that their first meeting is actually relatively similar of GGX all things considered but their second isn't at all.
What actually happens is Sol badguy, the main character btw, ravages through hell's forest in attempt to kill Dizzy because she's last remaining commander Gear. He fights her with struggle as it is revealed Dizzy is the daughter of Justice. After defeating her, he's about to slay her for good but Ky stops him from doing it and say Gears aren't inherently evil, something he realised after discussing with Justice during the first game. Sol accepts Ky's request and spares Dizzy. All of this can easily be found in this short manga which is a cannon summary of GGX events in preview of Strive's launch.
-The shit that bothers me the most is the COMPLETE ERASURE of my favorite Guilty Gear character, Testament, who plays a HUUUUUUGEEE role in Dizzy's character development. Only mentionning Testament by name at the marriage is a spit in my face and justify this entire rant and shitting on this show (also Testament lives in Ilyria castle during Strive events, making their absence incoherent).
-TOTAL OMMISSION of Dizzy's joining the jellyfish pirates after leaving the grove. Which becomes an issue later in the episode of why Johnny is present at her marriage in the first place. Sugita Tomokazu narration briefly mentions "Dizzy's former guardian" but Dizzy's former guardian is Testament, she just was in his crew alongside all the other jellyfish pirates. The reason she joined the jellyfish pirates is to wait for the PWAB to erase her bounty and the world to forget her case while she stays hidden in the sky until reuniting with Ky.
-For the short passage of Sin in the forest, well it's a big fuck you. Guilty Gear powerlevel is basically mid to late DBZ tier for a great part of the cast including Sin, he could obliterate this bear into atoms in second. During the events of GG2, a mind controlled Sin was able to fight Sol to a tie 1on1, Sol is the strongest character in the entire story apart from a couple of outliers who are near god level, being Ino, Happy Chaos and Axl. Sol is able to tank dimension imploding onto themselves, that should tell you how strong Sin actually is.
-Many character missing for Ky and Dizzy's marriage is logical for most of them but a few. As showed afterwards, both Ramlethal and Elphelt live in the castle, as well as Testament normally, them not being present when an attack occurs is ridiculous.
-Johnny isn't that powerful, Unika being as strong as him isn't shocking. However Dizzy beating Ky and Dizzy on a 1v2 is insane considering both Ky and Dizzy are in top5 strongest characters as well alongside Sol. I hope for ArcSys she isn't revealed to be trash in the game when her DLC releases lmao.
-Ky seals himself with Dizzy with the thunderseal like he did during the Baptisma 13 incident, at least that's something we already know is possible. Still it looks like ass.
-Unika motivations are meaningless. Gears have been extinct for at least 15 years now that she appeared, the only Gears left alive are Dizzy, half gear Sin, and the peaceful gears of ganymede island like Dr Paradigm. She is actively hunting a dead specie, gears aren't even an issue in the world of GG anymore and at least 99% of their corpses were absorbed by Valentine years ago.
-Most characters get a couple of lines of introduction but Ramlethal and Elphelt do not for some reason. The explanation for this is the writers realised any summary of their existence would require to refer to dozens of characters who weren't presented either, like Aria, Valentine, Ariels, Justice, Bedman and Asuka.
-Yet for the most hilarious part of the entire episode, Jack-0 Valentine is presented with a single line: "Sol's partner". Ignoring the fact Sol isn't even presented as the titular main character anyway, summarizing Jack0 as "sol's wife" is so dumb it almost feel like it's was written like a meme from a GG secondary. Jack0 isn't the 3rd clone of Valentine, reincarnation of Aria Hale who fusionned with Justice to stop the Universal will from destroying the world as well as bearing the Scale of Juno inside her, she is just Sol Badguy's wife lmao.
-Finally because I've written too much. Baiken should be with Anji taking care of Delilah and not still roam around the world for no reason but the reason of her presence I know was marketability more than proper good writing.

Anyway this show sucks complete ass and is just a shilling campaign for Unika because she will join Strive's roster in a couple of months. It looks bad, sounds bad, is incoherent with the established lore and is a waste of time. Still I will keep watching it in hope of seeing my fucking GOAT Axl Low appear for even one second even if I know it will not happen because the entire cast was already announced and is the most reddit tier cast possible.
Guilty Gear is actually cool, if you want a better show than this watch the WoolieVersus video series where he explains the entire lore of GG in 5 hours, it's way better than this garbage.

Disappointing (expected it).
Slideshow made me laugh. The face close ups are awful (When Ky attacking Unika most notable - also a moving slide). The animation was ehh.
The backgrounds are one thing I liked. Music - nothing interesting to GG standards.
Rip to Kliff and Justice who will never be mentioned ever again (?). But the posterchild mascot must get it's screentime after selling every merch it had.

Was the whole point of this product to be a consummative for the tumblr/twitter/reddit "fans" that joined post-covid to see their favourites doing whatever stuff it is, animated?

As a GG fan I thought the first episode was alright, it definitely left out a lot of exposition (which is to be expected, that would probably take a whole 2 or 3 seasons to go through all of the relevant history of the games and the pre-game timeline) but I think the approach of having little character introductions is a neat touch and I hope every character gets their moment. That being said, it is definitely a bit more style over substance but I think if you are a fan of the guilty gear games you hope for cool fight scenes with the characters' special moves and supers and of course awesome music.

I'm a big fan of Guilty Gear, but I'm real worried about what the hell they plan to do with this show. I do really like Sin as a character, but so far it feels really flat? The animation is seemingly really bland and boring, just kinda looks like they're trying to make things look "hype" for a greater audience. I knew they wouldn't really delve into the lore because it would be too dense for the average viewer and they would lose interest, but still... also, I know I won't like Unika as a character at all. The plot as a whole just looks like it's ramping up to be incredibly boring, and the character animation is not great. For the most part they just look like their in game models but there is times where it looks really effing werid. Also none of my like big favorite characters are probably going to be featured because they're going with more of like "gears are just like us, we need to stop being mean towards them" as apposed to playing with the insanity of past lore. I'll still be watching, and I don't want to judge on the first ep, but it's not looking great so far.

hard episode 1 to judge - it's doing like triple overtime because GG lore is fucking crazy and extensive and then they're introducing characters who have a lot of history within that lore, all for new viewers but also making a story interesting for people who know about this universe or play already. overall it was okay, the animation was really nice. I wish that stained glass plot dump at the beginning was consistent in that style until they transitioned to sin and sol.

As a fan of the lore and characters, I am happy with what we saw so far

I already love the whole Story Mode from the game that is just basically a movie using the game models, so the mix up between models and differents art style hit in the right spot for me

Hard to follow a plot where Sin is the MC instead of Frederick or Ky, those two have two much presence and character to be fill up by someone like Sin in my opinion, lets just wait and see

Only nitpick is that they should have introduce "Sol Badguy" as Frederick Bulsara since he no longer posses the Flame of Corruption and this show is obviously intended for fans of the series, if you are a newcomer without previous knowledge you should just drop it or go watch Youtube´s Essays explaining the lore

I totally loved the premise of Ky chasing after that girl because of her uncontrollable power, but after they showed Sin's character, the epicness just went away and this series turned mediocre on me.

I never played the game.

Anyway, I'd like to play Ky as a character chasing after the girl, Dizzy, but the seriousness of it all just, as I've said, went away... after their son was introduced by something like a muscle-head, contrary to the personalities of the parents... what a twist, in a bad way.
But that's not really the point of my message, it's not about the son being introduced after that, but what comes before it. I was hoping for a few episodes, at the very least, to recreate the story of Ky chasing after Dizzy in a very epic way possible, but I didn't get to see it.

Sol's VA is familiar, so I guess I was able to bear this episode.

Two characters I want to see to get an in-depth character development, but the episode went to marriage or engagement like it's in a hurry...

Theme songs were decent, especially the ED.

P.S. The CG could be better.
ASinfulPersonageApr 5, 4:25 PM
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

Saw the show get a 6, so i gave it a biased 10, due to my love for the game, hehe. That aside, think i have a grasp of who our main cast is for this show. Johnny, Elphet, Ramlethal, Baiken, Sol, Ky, Dizzy, and Jacko. Welp, i'm a May main, so ain't gonna complain, due to the Jellyfish Pirates being mentioned baby! Don't think we're getting April & May holding hands, but at least their crew got mentioned, and that's enough for me baby.

That aside, choosing Matsudaira's VA from Gintama for Johnny was such a MASTERPIECE OF A CHOICE, in a literal sense, suits bro's chill vibe persona, AS HECK. Now, last but not least, this tart Unika or whatever, i've never seen such an all-rounded character in my whole years of playing the game. She's got close-range martial arts, mid-range bullets, zoning rays, and flying wings?

Are you sure you're the "human" Unika and Dizzy is the "gear" anymore? Cuz from what i saw, 1v4ing Ky, Dizzy, Sin, and JOHNNY, you're anything BUT human. Is she going the Lelouch approach without the self-sacrafice part? Dunno anymore. All i can say, is that Baiken is hilarious for staring at a Unika bounty poster which literally don't even show her face, and going all like "guess this tart is next". I mean, all i can say to that is, as expected of our Baiken.

As someone who has only played Strive and one of the older pixelated games for a few minutes I thought I'd watch to learn more about the universe and well, let's just say the execution isn't the best.

I think I get the gist of what's going on here... There are biological-magical humanoid weapons/gears that pose a threat to humanity, but Kiske (a king) managed to marry one upsetting some people, and now it's all about that angry group trying to start of the fight against them again because they still fear the gears. Whatever, that's fine.

But man the direction this episode was so erratic. We go from one scene where Sin (the prince) is hunting for a bear with Sol Badguy (lol) to a gala? We learn that Sin has a soft heart when he doesn't kill the bear and it's cubs so that's nice, but the transition to the gala felt awkward. And all these characters (presumably from the game) get introduced but they get like two lines and then disappear for the remainder of the episode. I guess people familiar with the games probably enjoyed seeing these characters but it felt like they were cramming so much stuff into the episode to get new people up to speed quickly.

i tried it, got to 18m 33s into it... and stopped. ugh. i don't like it. deleting this one and dropping it right now with no Rating.

character designs, ugly.

writing, bleck. :p

animation is too mixed up with CGA, 3D drawn CG work, and drawn work... and the blending of all 3 is atrocious.

prop design, ugly.

premise, mildly interesting and that's why i tried it.

frankly this show is not even worth my time to finish the first episode.

this style and technology level of animation is NOT there yet. it needs another 5-10 years' worth of development before it is good enough to compete with pure hand-drawn works or the standard PC workstation plus key animation/hand-drawn rendering techniques.

i hope y'all that like this one enjoy it, but i won't be watching it.
just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

Dropped withing 4 minutes in, it's plain disrespectful to guilty gear fans imo since we never had an anime adaption of ps1's game, which would have gave context to this one, and it lousily "compile" the whole story from previous saga into 4 excruciating minutes of explaining the reason the protagonist exist... That's was the first and only time i ever rated any episode, and sadly had to be in this situation. : (

EDIT: NieR set the bar too high for me...

Nice, so many hot buff guys. Though I always wondering who are the equivalent of Ryu and Ken or Kazuya and Jin in this series, could it be Sol and Ky or Sol and Sin, I can't decide.

before the Strive release they all hit the gym ๐Ÿ˜‚

On one hand the fighting and characters look cool, but on the other hand the script is terrible and the overacting is grating.

Starting off we have (had)

With one of the starting characters who I have still never played in my time with this series.
And, I am learning something new almost frame by frame.

Also doesn't hurt to be enlightened on their personalities when the scene

Runs its course straight into the reason I was so hyped for this airing. Dizzy.

In a meeting that, tbh, was lost on me to the importance of the history. Per the series chronology.

I only knew her as Queen Dizzy and played her for 6 months or less.
If this is the groundwork of a story from twenty+ years ago. I'm glad to see it animated in the modern day.
As I am only a single year, or less, "older". Then, Guilty Gear's initial title entry.

This anime was what I decided on as my blind entry into the lore and history of the series. Even with just a single episode, I am not disappointed at all in taking a break from Strive to wait for this airing. I doubt I'm alone in that fact here in the United States.

As everytime, another 'Challenger' enters the arena

I am realizing background that no one, even very experienced friends. Ever expressed to engage me as a new player.
-> Johnny is May's pirate captain?
Curveball right there. As one of my close friends who initially introducted Johnny. To teach me how to play.
Practically drove trivia of why he was one of his favorites. Never even touched on that fact.

There is a lot of breadth to the Guilty Gear universe. And, as everything else comes secondary to the gameplay.
I'm shocked they fit so much prior content into episode one. Instead of writing around the new entries up for release in, the short term.
Ie in coordination with the anime's production schedule. Giving Unika that much more focus while her kit stays hidden.

That was what I expected. And was reinforced by every single trailer + promotional.
None prepared me for a Sin Kiske adventure-romance arc with the title heroine.

Or how, I still don't understand who this guy is

Or why a US Senator is addressed as a "Lord". Considering... I only almost finished Strive's campaign last week.
A flying white house and robot president is the sole context I was aware of regarding

the United States.
Or

Allied "new" Britannia.

Ram and El.

Especially Elphelt, as one of my only two proficient characters...

Even if briefly was great.

Jack-O

Playing "partner" (house) with Sol was satisfying as fuck.

And the small single-frame easter eggs they kept throughout.

Were too frequent for me to screenshot.

The amount of exposition shuttered in made this feel like an action-filled race.
Even though minimal action occurred, even during fight sequences.

The movements and transitioning were placeholders for more story. Single one-liners of dialogue. After every point of contact.
If it had a Jazz background track, I'd say they were setting us up for a Cowboy Bebop character guest addition to Strive. Simply by how well that style was emulated.

Since I knew what, and hoped, to expect, the visuals we have seen.
A computer-generated photo filter instead of anime-esque art style.
Is not as much of an issue with me. Not as is for most other viewers.

Viewers who would see this direction as a lowered standard of quality for the medium.
When it is faithful to what I have played, even at cranked to 11 graphics. On the latest title entry.

It's animated. Devoid of the SFX and depth of field we're used to seeing its cast portrayed in. Indicating visually it is an artistic direction.

Of reproduction to source. Done by hand.

Ie, referencing Sin Kiske pulling up his power. Prior to Sol snuffing it out.
You can see a move queue during combat vs another player.
For, from my understanding, a change in the opponent's attack cadence and combo setup.

The second I saw that early interaction here in the episode. I knew this was being done manually just to emulate a rendered, scripted engine execution. But, still remaining distinct enough to capture experienced players' attention away from the game and to the scope of a "universe" instead.

A very noticeable "live action" type of onboarding that I was not expecting. However, executed well and a fair indicator of what is to come.
Certainly enough to plan to watch weekly, instead of my usual binge watching. Done following a season or when most episodes are halfway aired across the industry.

Imo, weekly watching is an already won accomplishment if it can grab me from day one.
Ie I'm staying hopeful. Current detractions aside, I have a good feeling about what this production will pull off.

I've never had contact with Guilty Gear before and after watching this episode I think it would be better if it stayed that way xD The only plus is the design of that blue-haired girl but I guess she died so...

I love guilty gear as a series, this was pretty nice but I wish they expanded more on the overarching lore of the franchise to make more sense to people who aren't as familiar with it. Without the context most of this stuff doesn't make sense. Otherwise I think the OP and ED were pretty good, and the animation was nice. The only thing I really wish for is that they add some character cameos like a certain dandy character (Slayer).

Been fan of Guilty Gear for 25 years. This show is very disappointing. Have to finish this show but still

@-DxP- Strive Designs. Not as good as the original design. Sin and Sol look like they been hitting the juice.

I’m on the outer rim as a Guilty Gear fan. Like the characters but never deep dived into the lore. Saw a bit of Strive when that came out.

Following fighting game lore has always seem like a headache and watching a YouTube summary felt cheap as well.

I can tell this is pure fan service for true GG fans, I’m glad they get this but out of my depth on this one.

I guess anime based on games are always terrible, kinda like how western movies/tv of games are always terrible? I had no idea until now.

This shit is straight up unwatchable for someone that doesn't know the Guilty Gear franchise, and I'm speaking from experience here. I can't play fighting games due to accessibility issues, so I'd hoped that this would be a good way to experience the franchise. It is not a good way to experience the franchise. I think this has actually significantly decreased my interest in the franchise TBH.

Is this even good for Guilty Gear fans? It's basically a slideshow of the story with fragments of snippets of hints of echoes of a really cool 1v1 fight, so is it even entertaining for people that know what's going on?

The whole episode was just close-ups of the characters' faces, you could see that it's a very low-quality anime. At least I'll be able to see more interactions between Sol and Sin
