This is probably my least favorite episode of the series. This was the payoff to one of the BIGGEST plot points of the story as well as one of the biggest driving motivations for Lelouch, and we got a rushed, virtually nonsensical and unsatisfying conclusion to one of the biggest things in the entire show, and given everything that happens in the episodes prior during this season, this rushed as frig 2 episode arc feels like an afterthought. The only truly positive thing about it is Lelouch's performance, as its one of the strongest in the series. Otherwise, this was a giant letdown.

I've been harping on how much especially the second half of R2 reminds me of Eva. Well I mean that's not going to stop now. Charles was literally trying to do the Complementation Process from End of Eva. As if he didn't resemble Gendo Ikari as a character enough already. But while Shinji cried and cursed his weakness while his Dad employed a crazy ego maniacal plan. Lelouch even after game changing plot twists are revealed, straight up kills his father. He destroys the project, and banishes Charles is spirit to be absorbed by the collective unconscious. Someone working on this show had some serious daddy issues. Patricide is everywhere up in this.

I did not see the big reveal coming that's for sure. I hadn't even put it together V.V. had killed Marianne. Much less that those two had been working with Charles and C.C. on this crazy bullshit. And that the Emperor did basically have good intentions. I honestly thought the show was going to try and make us like Charles here at the very end. Like oh you did kind of care the whole time. And this was a pretty well meaning if kind of unconscionable plan. It would just be too much after making us hate him so much for so long. I was glad when Lelouch called bullshit on his excuses at the end. And rejected his crazy plan.

It was savage he turned his back on Marianne too though. Especially since her death was one of his two big motivations he had for taking over Britannia to begin with. But turns out she was just a crazy as Charles the whole time. It's just weird because she was characterized for so long as a kind idyllic mother. With very little else known about her. And then when we found out she was the one C.C. was speaking with so fondly in the past it reinforced this rosy image of her. But the truth was pretty sad and ugly. Even C.C. turned on her and so doesn't have to be absorbed into the collective unconscious. Those two must have felt pretty bitter as they faded into nothing.

The ending was nothing short of flooring. And in more of a confusing than truly spectacular way. How Suzaku and Lelouch escaped is not explained though we can reasonably infer C.C. helped them. The basis of their reconcile is kept secret from the audience too. Suzaku started to understand Lelouch a little better earlier. And sided with him over Charles and Marianne. But it didn't seem like they'd quite reconciled yet. The final puzzle piece is the basis for their actions at the very end. Suzaku hates geasses right, so why's he OK with Lelouch using it on everyone in the royal hall to get his way. What is Lelouch's goal by doing this too, what does he hope to accomplish with Nunally dead? And what about Schneizel and Cornelia? I'm sure all of this will be answered very soon. In the meantime that closing scene might have been confusing but it was also pretty badass. All Hail Lelouch.

Marriane are actually going to work together with emperor.
are they dead for good?

V.V. is actually the killer and started it all.
how about him then? is he also dead?

now, the battle turned into Lulu vs Shneizel & Black Knights?
are the black knights still working together with Shneizel?

Okay, so here's some questions:

1. Why did the death scene for Lady Marianne change from having Nunnally there to not having her there?

2. If the Emperor was so scared of what VV would do to his family, why didn't he just have him locked up like he had CC locked up?

Eh, good I guess.

The first half of the episode has too much info mashed into it, besides, it's executed poorly and doesn't bother to explain many concepts that lay all over the plot.

The second half, though, is pretty good because it's so simple and intriguing.

What a twist!
On a darker note, CC seems worried that Lelouch is slowly becoming like his father Charles. Probably not the first time she's seen history repeat itself.

Hope CC survives to the end of the show, she's my favourite from the start. Always calm and collected, yet absolutely adorable when it comes to pizza and soft toys.

But with that being said, I can't expect anything good from Suzaku, knowing that he pointed that sword to Lelouch in C.C.'s world.

Lelouch is selfish, Charles and Marianne's wish for the world to be the kinder and gentler world they're fixing the world but they abandoned Lelouch and Nunnally because they're focused to their goal about creating this Ragnarok thing. But Lelouch he wants to be the one to do it to change the world he already started it, I think he also wants to be a ruler which he's so absorbed into now he wants to be the boss

What a rollercoaster. This would literally be the series finale of some shows but I have a feeling it is only the beginning for Code Geass.

Marianne trying to sharpie Suzaku's face was funny. The philosophical argument between Lelouch and Charles was actually super interesting. The whole teleporting into a library part was weird though. Lelouch doesn't even trust his own mother. That's my boy. Great, I have even more of a reason to hate V.V. now: he killed Marianne and effectively crippled Nunnally. Rest in peace, you sack of garbage. Can she really Geass her way back into her rotting corpse? Doesn't sound particularly optimal. So Charles' plan was basically to take approximately eight billion people and mush them into one collective body? Sounds like communism 2. Never thought Lelouch would go against his mother. Lelouch literally just Geassed a God. Admittedly, I didn't see this as where the show was heading when I started it fifty days ago. Why did he strut out in his school uniform? Lelouch announcing himself as Emperor was badass. The new Knight of Zero (I fucking love the dual-implications of the name) was badass. Lelouch taking over the government was badass. All hail Lelouch was badass. So the last four episodes are Lelouch vs Schneizel? I'm fucking pumped. Can't wait to see how they will top this episode.

I'm still quite confused after rewatching this episode. Can someone please explain the following to me?

1. Who gave the Geass power to V.V. and Marianne? Is that C.C.?

2. What exactly is the 'gentle world' Charles and Marianne wanted to create?

3. Whenever a Geass owner makes a contract with his/her recipient, the recipient needs to fulfill the owner's wish. Is death the same wish of every Geass owner? As far as I know both C.C. and the one who gave Geass to her wanted death, but not sure about V.V.

4. C.C. has been saying all the time that she must keep Lelouch alive for her own sake. Why didn't she just make contracts with others so the chance of getting her wish fulfilled improves? Because C.C. is able to have multiple contracts at the same time e.g. Mao and Lelouch

i understand so much more now but i'm still so confused

at least we now know about marianne's death, that mystery has been resolved. so charles, marianne, vv and cc wanted to bring back the dead? is that it? i'm still a little unclear about that. what is the "gentle world" they thought they were creating? i really didn't understand what their goal was? and lelouch was so angry that charles was trying to control everyone? but like... dude...... what does your own geass do....... what have you been doing this entire time....................

but vv sucks and that's a confirmed fact. good riddance.

and now lelouch has a double eyed geass #swag

another time leap?? how convenient. again. they better explain everything that has happened in that one month. and i mean e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. apparently nunnally is alive now??

lelouch just rocked up like yeah i'm the emperor deal with it, i want some explanations!! but seeing cc's troubled face reminded me of her geass power, how she used her power to make everyone love her so in the end nobody truly did - lelouch is going to face a dilemma like that; he won't be truly happy if everyone mindlessly obeys him and there is no individuality and differences in opinion etc. he is going to be so miserable. but hey at least dream team of lelouch and suzaku is back in action for whatever reason

what. is. schneizel's. deal. i ask time and time again. what is with this guy.

maybe it too late but i will try to explain your questions.

1) we dont know who gave the geass to v.v, that is not important at all to the story, maybe he was given the geass by some random guy who had the code just like c.c, at the time of the story he already had the code. Marian was given her geass by c.c,that was told in ep 21, it activated for the first time when her body was dying, and btw every one has a type of geass depending on the the personality and what the person truely wishes.

2) the gentle world they were talking about is a world of peace, charles version of peace is a world of memories where every body is only one person as there will be no lies, no masks. It is a world where the dead join the living and where every body knows the truth of the others, it simply the reconstruction of people's memories via the collective consciousness, this is what a gentle world means for charles and mariane, but lelouch didnt agree with this version as this world is stagnant, there is no desire, no problems, no struggle for happiness, no hurting others... no evolution. Lelouch wanted a world that evolves as people try to seek happiness, a world where there is peace for even strangers, a world where people could still desire, love and protect what they truely want... This is his version of the gentle world and it becomes clearer in the final episode.

3)we dont know if death is the wish of every code possessor, but it's probably the case for most of them when you think about their situation as immortals. But charles's wish wasnt to die (and charles has the code) , but to create a world without lies, and he used his code for this objective. V.v also didnt wish to die, his contract with charles was to create this world of no lies, but he broke the contract when he lied to charles and his code was stolen by charles then.

4) c.c has been giving geass to a lot of people but no on could ever fulfill her wish, mao was one of them, she said in the first season maybe ep 15 that she made a lot of contracts, so she quit giving geass radomly because that turned out to be futile, she was searching for some one with the potentiel to fulfill the contract and she had high hopes on lelouch as she knew him and his story, if you rewatch the first episode of the series she was pursing him since he was young, and in another episode she said that she did right by choosing lelouch. She chosed someone with a big objective, who is carismatic, who has a lot of pride and can do whatever it needs to acheive his goal, she knew about his revenge from the begining and used it for her sake even if she knows that mariane is alive.

5)i really recommend to rewatch the whole series, a lot of things make sense when you rewatch it, one watch isnt enough to understand every thing, the pace of code geass is high, there is a lot of information in every episode, especialy ep 21 of season 2, it is one of the most confusing episodes of the series and anime in generak as it contains a lot of philosophical elements, a lot of metaphores and reveales, and a lot of dialogue that isnt easy to fully comprehend. I hope this helped you even though i'm writing this too late in comparaison of when you posted.

Thanks for your detailed explanation! Really appreciate it. As you said CG is indeed one of the most intense and fast paced series in terms of plot development and it’s easy to miss out some important hints and details. I’m now watching the OVA movies and hopefully R3 won’t disappoint me.

the movies are good, but not as great as the tv series as they skip a lot of details and changed some plot lines, the newest movie is a sequel to the recap movies not the original, there is no sequel to R2.
In order not to be disapointed dont expect the level of the original, as the story in fukkastu no lelouch isnt as good as in the original, it is still enjoyable though, and btw is it also confusing regarding some geass/code power and the state of a certain character. If you want we can continue in private to discuss what happened in the movie when you watch it.

ALL HAIL LELOUCH. ALL HAIL LELOUCH.

I just love how theatrical Lelouch is. He's always got a plan, and knows how to make it hit home hard.

Only a few epsiodes left. I find myself hoping CC finds here humanity again and gets together with Lelouch. I don't think it will happen but my inner romantic wants it to!

I guess everything is sort of explained as "Because geass"

Suzaku and Lelouch are now teamed up. He's pretty much-taken Charles place, and since the Black Knights don't like him. Does Schneizel become the new Zero?

He technically would have gotten what he wanted, at the cost of no more progress.

I guess his anger at his dad was too strong for any of that though.

What an amazing episode. How did I forget about it after all these years. This is why Code Geass is my top 3 anime.

Also, is this Jonny Yong Bosch's greatest performance yet? i feel like it is

Lelouch is evil. I really hope the character does in the end. I've been rooting against him this whole season.
