@Plopop Whoever is in charge of Science SARU Post-Masaaki Yuasa is doing a better job in managing the studio and also picking up better source material for their anime. Currently Science SARU is at its prime imo.

Acro-Silky confused Aira for her daughter. Maybe it would have been better if Aira was actually her daughter? idk.
Also I don't get how Aira was able to see her in the first place if she was dead

Well... Where i am from, there was alot of folklore stories (lets leave it at that) of people who died with some regrets (stuff like losing a child, a fight with their children, the child leaving etc), they never rested in peace, so they became ghosts hunting the living and sometimes, not by evil intent, to pass time with living children projecting their child in them. I feel, Japanese may have similiar stories. And here also, (again old folklore) some people have the gift sometimes see ghosts, a thing this show touches and i feel is also mixed in Japanese folklore. So, i think that explains it.
@Viriathus Thanks for your answer!
It's obvious that Dandadan is inspired by Japanese folklore (and folklore in general).
The reason I'm confused is that I thought it was established that Aira is able to see ghosts only because of the golden ball.
That's why it seems convenient to me that she saw Acro-Silky when she was a child (on top of the misunderstanding that follows).
It is possible that she was able to see ghosts by virtue of being a child and lost that ability later, as you said.
However, if that's true, it is not clearly conveyed and I don't think it's a good way to write her backstory in any case.

One of my favorite mini arcs, Acro Silky arc.

That opening scene of Acro Silky running then transitioning to her going crazy over Aira is just UGH, PEAK FICTION! They adapted the manga so gracefully, I knew what was coming yet I couldn't help but be in my feelings for Acro Silky. Anybody who has a loving family member knows how this episode hit hard.
My favorite episode and mini arc of Dandadan for sure.

OST this episode was really good, hits you right in the feels.
@Cornbeef19 I can hear your voice narrating the "UGH, PEAK FICTION" part fr

@Mavuika Hopefully one day they'll find out.
@Riotstarter If they make the next few episodes about finding that kid and ensuring she's safe and sound, I wouldn't even be mad. I'm emotionally invested into knowing everything is ok.

I've read the manga and yet this episode still made bawl. It's been such a long while since the last time I cried so hard. The whole team which was in charge for this episode cooked.

At first thought Aira WAS her lost daughter, just with dyed hair and a dad for some reason, was hoping that was the case at least. But actually it's just as impactful, if not more so, that Aira isn't. They both lost someone, but they found each other. Like someone already said, it's about found family.

Sometimes the hardest-hitting parts to backstories are seeing other characters' reactions to them. Once we cut back out of the backstory we see Momo in tears, telling Okarun to hold back from attacking Acro Silky. And then we see Aira, absolutely stunned from what she had just witnessed. Yeah those usually do it, the backstories with almost no sound or dialogue except for the somber piano playing in the background.

Gotta dock off some points for the choice to keep the up-beat ED for this episode. This is the perfect chance to have an ed unique to this episode to continue the mood, or at least have no ed at all. Doesn't take away from the actual episode of course, but it was still really tone-deaf.

Even as someone who has read the manga, I was completely unprepared for how emotional this episode would be. It’s been a long time since I read the series, and I’ve forgotten much of the story, but this episode’s backstory hit me like a truck. The pain and tragedy woven into Acrobatic Silky’s past were heart-wrenching, and I couldn’t hold back tears.

Big applause to the studio for their incredible work—everything from the animation to the soundtrack was outstanding. The stairwell chase scene, in particular, was breathtaking. The way it was framed from the mother’s perspective as she desperately searched for her daughter was so raw and tragic. The intensity of her emotions, paired with the immersive visuals and music, made that sequence unforgettable.

It’s rare to see an episode bring such depth and weight to a character’s story, and this one delivered in every way possible.

What a pessimistic takeaway from a beautiful adaptation. Instead of seeing it as a studio losing it's identity it's more like a new chapter where they pour quality directing into mass appealing shounen.

Fuck man, people were hyping up this episode and for good reasons. I couldn't even cry, it's more than just sad, I was speechless, it was utter despair. I really hope they're in a better place, a kinder world. Not even Turbo Granny with the hair dryer was enough to distract me from sinking it all in.

did that with devilman, eizouken, ping pong. colors within will come out and weebs won't have this same energy.

science saru was and always has been a respected studio in its efforts of artistic integrity and creative vision. it just irks me that someone talks as if it wasn't already. just a minor pet peeve. Being a recognized studio by the masses isn't what its cracked up to be.

When the first episode dropped, I made the mistake of watching it whilst riding a bus, which was a bit awkward because of the banana aliens.

Not having learned my lesson, I decided to watch this episode whilt riding a train, which was a bit awkward because I had to constantly fight back the tears.

Holy, they cooked so damn hard. Thought it was a pretty nice tragic backstory in the manga, here I was left speechless. Science SARU elevating the emotional highs to another level altogether. This may be the adaptation that will bring them universal recognition within the anime community.

Here's the ballet scene from the manga. Anime was quite a bit subtler about it's implication (and the prostitution as well)

@Mavuika Im not a Manga reader, but saw the discussion about it, and in the Manga, there is a pannel in which she, goes to heaven with her child. So, the child also died, which makes it more tragic.

I knew this ghost had a tragic backstory for sure, her child probably died. She was looking her child through Aria. But, the Anime, is very lighthearted (until now), comedy focus and maybe even slight romance. I didnt expect they would show the backstory of the ghost and how it would hit in the feels as much as this.
@Viriathus yup

although, I think it's only Aira's wishes

Wow, that just sad. While I somehow expected a similar backstory, the animation, pacing and music are just heartbreaking. As someone who found sad stories generally melodramatic like most Violet Evergarden stories from the series especially episode 10, this sad story was so damn well done. Thanks Dandadan.

Edit: It's kind of hinted at in the episode that Acrobatic Silky's long lost daughter passed away as well considering Aira's words and things doesn't well when people are taken by the yakuza.

Why was this shit an entire episode? Worst episode of the series by far. Yes, it had great direction and cinematography, but outside of that everything else was incredibly surface-level and mediocre. I did not care whatsoever about this random ass yokai's backstory and her scary kid unfortunately. Also unfortunately, they hog up every last minute of the episode and it isn't even like it had incredible or even good writing to at least have me appreciate it. The entire story can be summed up in a sentence and there is absolutely no deep meaning behind any of it.

6/10 episode for good direction and cinematography
