I'm not really sure if I'm feeling this anime as a whole, but I respect the art direction in this episode specifically. Besides how beautiful it looks, I guess I'm also feeling a little miffed that the creator conveniently portrays the tragedy of one woman's life in this episode, and then will probably show a panty shot in the next lol. But whatever, male gaze and all that. I suppose it is a shounen.

Aye. This is presentation above content in a nutshell. The direction is so remarkable it almost makes you forget the complete tone shift from the previous episode. I don't think fanservice is the problem, it's just that the series struggles to balance its ambitions. Mostly, it struggles to find any particular element to explore with its themes; thriving on personality, but being scarce on substance.

There was nothing particular about the Acrobatic Silky woman's backstory to compel any non obvious response from the viewer. Any normal person would find the case of a prostitute mother and her stolen child tragic, yet the story doesn't go beyond what is already agreeable and known.
@Sheklon first of all, damn like how did you find my comment buried among hundreds of others lol. second of all, I couldn't say it any better "thriving on personality, but being scarce on substance". that's exactly how I feel about this anime, and a decent amount of other ones too.
can't yuck my yum

"...and in this case putting such an amount of brutality just for the sake of making the audience cry without any justification is quite frankly, pretty cliche and cheap."

@James-LastOmnic I do agree that a tragedy, and I think quite obviously so, will feel more rewarding or impactful when there is long-term character development compared to stories without that time for emotional build up. Made in Abyss, Cyberpunk and like you mentioned previously Clannad:AS are examples of series that does that well (I think personally).

However, I feel like there is merit to the idea that, if done well, not all scenes need a extensive setup to be impactful or for a viewer to be emotionally invested, regardless of it feeling cliché or not. I think to the use of 'fan-service' in rom-com anime — although it helps with initial discovery of the series since it is popular in that genre — it does not contribute to a show's lasting impression or its substance. Kaguya-sama: Love is War is an example of a series that has clichés/tropes but due to its substance has swept the rom-com genre by storm; evident by its popularity.

I think what I'm trying to say is that I look at Shonen series and their tiredly used tropes the same way. For example, I feel like this episode of Dandadan is still good! Even though the tragic backstory might not have been needed to serve the narrative. Compared to a Shonen series which I think lacks substance and because of that its nothing BUT its tropes; like how you mentioned Kimetsu no Yaiba — which I also agree on with your earlier statement on that show.

I can understand some of that, but we might still be getting ahead of ourselves. I think we should wait and see where the rest of episodes take us. If the show runners can manage to express again the ideas found in ep.7 it would surely feel sensible and meaningful to bear that difficult scene.

That aside I want to reiterate how great the voice acting was this episode.. I found it exceedingly haunting.
I am curious to check the dub for this episode as I have a feeling the English voice actors would struggle to keep up with the OG voice work in this case.

Edit: Dubs did good too.

This episode was an absolute masterpiece. From the way they portrayed the past, to the bond between them.

The Point of View was astonishing and shocking to watch.

The sound and music 10/10.

That was a fantastically directed episode. I wish they'd delved a little more into the backstory of the red woman and her kid because I personally didn't feel the attachment that I expected but it was good enough. I'm positive that this was better than the manga cause ain't no way bruh. The music was absolutely phenomenal and of course the animation in this show never fails to deliver peak visuals. 5/5

I inadvertently found out that this episode made people cry (I didn't realize they were talking about DanDaDan initially) so when I went to go watch it, I expected some sort of emotion but WOW...... I was NOT ready. Yeup, I couldn't hold back the tears, no matter how hard I tried. This episode was amazing. Possibly my favorite episode of anime since certain parts of season 2 of Vinland Saga (I caught myself and ask for forgiveness because Frieren definitely had some as well). This show was already up there for in but this gave it a nice boost in talks of being one of my all time favorites. A lot of show left but so far, the potential is there.

I was so not expecting this episode to be this good. It had been a while since something made me this emotional. I love when stories can be told without words, and this is one of those cases when is told really well through just scenes. Tho I'm really curious to know what happened to that kid

bro that 34 who voted 1 out of 5 and 20 who voted 2 out 5 naver has a mom i guess, cuz wtf is that rating? bro rate just because this anime is a goon. while whole show like mushoko tensei get a lot of praise with whole grope and horny panties. this show barely done what mushoko did. and i believe this show is better. mushoko is good but the fanservice is also much more unnessecary. the whole show make fanservice as a plot. and dandadan too but still respect a lot for woman and as much you hate it, ep7 is the most best episode of the year, par with one piece fan letter. this 54 people, yall just hater

Is this even supposed to mean something? At least the other guy gave a legit argument, mentioning my mean score is cute at best because is not even something hidden, not the first time I see it on these forums as if it was some kind of gotcha.
@Ionliosite2 I don't know man, looks to me like you're a masochist that forces himself to watch shit you don't like just so you can be part of the discussion. It's not a gotcha, I just don't understand why you spend hours weekly watching things you don't enjoy.

@BuffBuff Because dance is a form of expression, her dance was portraying the sadness she couldn't put into words and the pit she fell into. Things like music, dance, art, etc, are art forms partially since they can help us put things that are hard to put into words in a form of expression. And the way the dance was expressing her feelings she couldn't put into words resonated with you.

@Zeroflamez Prove what wrong? Your entire criticism of this episode was based on the assumption that this is the author's best work, followed by asking him to do something original. Newsflash: THERE ARE NO ORIGINAL STORIES! Every story that can be written has been written and all that new authors can do is find a new little twist to put on existing ideas and execute in a fun and interesting manner. The writing and production of this anime is faaaar better than the likes of any of its contemporaries, whether it's JJK, Demon Slayer, Mashle, etc. Your comment makes no sense because you still believe that there's such a thing as an original thought.
