People are crying about alternate ending from kyoani.
But in general it makes much more sense if you think about it.
Kumiko loses to Mayu - who doesn't even want to be in the spotlight but is so naturally gifted that she becomes the best.
But she actually leads the school to victory - as a manager more or less. Ofc she is a good musician - but probably not the caliber of some extreme talent like Reina or Mayu, so she decides to pursue her career as a music teacher where she can shine.
In terms of logical development this is actually the best ending, period.

Man this was so underwhelming, they made a season full of drama, unwanted characters and going in circles just to make the most predictable and straightforward episode in anime history.

Not only that but they skipped an entire song and for the actual song they reused stuff from all the previous seasons, come on...

They could perfectly made kumiko play the solo and still win but I guess the writer just hate kumiko, well, finally hibike transfer student euphonium is over, at least they won gold.

There the "new students" are literally kanade, reina and kumiko (the one looking like kumiko even playing the eupho and sitting in the same place) it's probably symbolic but I thought it was lazy (as much as not even showing the eyes) but that's just a nitpick after the disappointment I felt for this series, it went from one of my favorite anime of all time, to just one more that I finished.

During the first minute of season 3, they play a trick where they show you Kumiko's exec notebook on the teacher's table. This scene is from the future: the same period when the anime's last scene ends.
Part of the reason for the Kumiko looking character playing the Eupho also has to do with her being used in first scene to pull this off, by tricking the viewer that they see Kumiko, when in fact it's a different character.
this tweet also explains it: https://x.com/Yuyucow/status/1807483711878754339?t=PtqAg0FKLKp_LcEuZA86mg&s=19

You can go though those tweets for more easter eggs and details, such as how colour coding makes sense if the first scene would take place in April 2024. The girl next to the 'Kumiko looking character' is a third year, like Asuka was in season 1.
This makes for one of the main themes for the series of building a future by passing down everything we love to the next generation

I read on JP Twitter that they were seemingly planning this third season before the incident. Naturally, a lot of things had to change after so many lives were unfairly taken from this world. The unmistakeable talent of those people, as well as their passion and love for animation, elevated Seasons 1 and 2 into something far greater.

As those on that thread also mention, this ending feels a lot like a nod to those people who are now no longer with us. Knowing how many of them worked on the show back then, those flashbacks carry a lot of meaning that extends beyond the show. This was no doubt a project that carried a lot of emotional weight for the KyoAni staff; seeing the story reach its end for one, but also honoring the memory of those who passed on. I think it’s something extraordinary.

I think the numerous flashback scenes are a reflection of the director's intention to bring the deceased staff members along with him into the final episode.

What an ending, I’m so emotional right now. This series got me through hard times and it will always have a special place in my heart. Some ups and downs this season, but overall a satisfying story from start to finish. Going to miss Kitauji High School!

What a tremendous journey from Kumiko. I want to type so many things... but I will be short. Yesterday I was feeling exactly the same when I finished the Liz movie. Not sad, but empty and almost 99% sure that it wasn't the end of this franchise. Now I am telling you, maybe no more Kumiko or Reina but the rest of the characters... maybe after a few years.

I'm still not very happy about episode 12 and the decision to leave the original source just because of a director's decision. Episode 12 really hurt a lot because of the promise Reina and Kumiko made at the beginning of the season, and to see it crumble because of a very gifted player with a terrible personality... I don't know man, it still feels wrong, very wrong to me. I have no idea why the directors decided to change things but I hope they explain something on the blurays. There's not enough material of Mayu to simply accept that she's better than Kumiko. I call her big boss because that's what she is to me, Kumiko never beat her. I'm convinced she didn't even play her best at the first audition.

But it's okay, I tanked it as a big Kumiko fan. This doesn't mean episode 13 was a bad ending, it was a very good ending that could've been better.

Hearing the performance was superb. I really like One Year Poem but the Liz piece is better for me. A very fast paced ending which really leaves a lot to be said at the end, to speculate and to form theories, just like KyoAni always wants. I still think the final episode needed more closure, felt very rushed at the beginning and at the end. Nonetheless, teared up many times listening to Kumiko and her fantastic friends for one last time. Mixed emotions from me all around this episode... both sad and happy.

My favorite characters this season other than Kumiko were Kanade, Hazuki and Mamiko. Kanade deserves her own show, what a great character this gremlin grew to be. Special mention to Ririka which I love as a character, but sadly not enough screentime.

Hazuki finally wins gold, a true champion in my eyes. I was going to give this season an 8, but I just can't.

9/10

These 9 years of Kitauji and music have been a blast.

Time to wait for the novel translations in order to see for myself whether this farce was intended by the author or not. Either way, later half of the season felt extremely rushed and the author's intention on using a plot device that I can't even call a character felt out of place. Imo it'd make more sense for the mysterious transfer student to be a trumpet user that is 0.001% better than Reina since that idiot begged to be knocked down a notch for some time now.

Overall, this season felt like a straight downgrade from the first two seasons, 7/10 at best, mainly due to time skip part. *That* felt decent.

GREAT ENDING, as usual I really like how KyoAni ends an anime, really satisfied with this ending, I cried when the concert started until the end of the ending song lol.

one thing that makes me a little disappointed is that I didn't see Asuka or Kumiko's Sis/Parents or was I just not paying attention? idk. but on the other hand, I am very satisfied with this final episode.

wow it turns out Shuuichi kept the promise Kumiko made, thankful he didn't fumble it. Kumiko being a teacher is just what I thought, she's very suitable for the job.

Goodbye Kanade, she's my favorite character in this show. Thank you Hibike Euphonium, Thank you Kumiko and Reina, Thank you Taki Sensei.

I hate this Anime (jk)
been rewatching the previous seasons + the movies I haven't seen and I finally caught up here.
A happy ending in which Kumiko×Reina and all of Kitauji finally got gold in the national competition but I still cant accept going for a Reina×Mayu at the very end of the series, it's just plainly brutal, they doubled down in rejecting the yuri, give Kumiko the justice she deserves! (and I heard its an anime original?). way to leave a bittersweet taste in my memory.
This series broke my heart many times, and it still did in the finale, I dont even know what to say anymore.
Kanade is cute.

After starting this series almost 6 years ago, watching as these characters grow and strive to finally complete their long awaited goal of getting gold at nationals, my journey with them has finally drawn to a close.

This is the series that got me into into watching anime -- which is crazy to say considering how many other anime I could've watched first -- but this was the one I chose, and I am so glad that I did. So to see that this series, actually got a proper ending unlike some other great shows, means so much to me.
I'm extremly thankful to everyone at Kyoto Animation who worked on this series: the seiyuus, directors, staff, everyone. They did such an immaculate job bringing this work to life, and this series is no exception to that. There is so much passion and care behind everything this studio creates, so it's no wonder that people can become so invested in these characters and stories. And for that, I'm forever thankful to them.

Now this episode -- I feel -- makes for such a fitting ending to this series. At first I was a little annoyed at how little of "Hitotose no Uta for Concert Band" we heard during the season, unlike the first two season with "Crescent Moon Dance." But after hearing it in full for the first time this episode, I believe it was well worth waiting till now to hear it; because the scenes of the previous years paired with the song itself, made for such an emotional performance. Hell, just the song alone is powerful enough to move someone to tears (me). The announcement of Kitauji winning gold also hit so damn hard, seeing three years of hard work finally being payed off is just so something else entirely. Then it ends with a quick slideshow alongside the credits, and a callback to the seasons opening episode, but with Kumiko as Kitauji concert bands Assistant Advisor. Unlike how other final episodes go for shows, Hibike! had a very simple ending that really matched the style the series had going for it.

I doubt that I'll ever become attached to another series as I have this one. Others have come pretty close but none of them have brought such emotions out of me like this series has. Who would've thought that this show about a girl and her schools concert band, would wind up being one of my -- if not -- favourite series of all time.
I truly will miss this show and the journey I went on with its characters.

It's funny how that works, isn't it? This isn't the first anime I watched, I think it was something like number ten. This is the first anime I watched that made me realize what anime can be like when it's done right. This anime actually significantly changed my life - I got into composition and restarted piano lessons because of it. I even wrote a concert band piece inspired by this - the first piece I've ever actually composed. And now I'm working on my third (though it's not a concert band piece).

This is why I have such a hard time with the people who are being so harsh on KyoAni for the decisions they made with this anime. The idea that people can somehow give up on such an amazing work of art simply because the plot doesn't go how they want is a mindset that's completely foreign to me. I mean, I guess I understand where they're coming from, but it doesn't make any sense. It's not that it's perfect, it's not, but it's more... well, let me put it this way.

I have written fanfiction in the past. Not lately, because I've found I don't much like playing around with other peoples' work, but I have. And I encountered the same kind of ungrateful attitude with my own works that I see here. And what I realized is that they're not criticizing anything they actually have any *right* to criticize. I mean, they can criticize my grammar and writing style - all good, I do like well-thought-out tips for improving my art. They can criticize things I've done with the plot I chose technically... like, I forgot I killed off that character and brought them back to life (okay, I've never done that, but I read a story with someone who did). But what I really can't stand is when people actually criticize my plot itself. Because when I sit down to write, it's, ultimately, a gift. I'm giving something of myself to the reader, and when they diss the actual content of the gift I created for them because I *wanted them to have it*, well, that bothers me.

I recognize I'm just a bit of a hypocrite in this regard (as my reviews show), but there's a bit of a difference between an objectively awful (or even questionable) plot and one that's really good but just doesn't go where you wanted.

And while KyoAni certainly had a profit motive here, what they have ultimately given us is a gift. A wonderful, amazing gift that at the least can give people an entertaining few hours and at the most can make peoples' lives better for having watched it. What a rare and precious gift that is! And people getting angry because they don't like the topping on this delicious cake, well...

I find it just a teensy bit offputting.

Sorry for the rambling rant. I'm agreeing with you. This was an amazing anime and I'm grateful to KyoAni and the author for giving it to us.

What happened in episode 12 aside and how any of us might have felt about it,

this was a great ending.

They got gold.

Everyone's going through life.

Kumiko x Shuuichi confirmed.

Kumiko, despite not going to music school, will continue in this world of high school wind ensemble.

The only thing I wish we could've seen was who the next president and vice-president would be.

I feel so empty. After all these years. It's finally... over. A big part of my life is now over. I will miss this story and the characters we love.

Been waiting for this W for so long. Easily anime of the season. Love the confident walk adult Kumiko has at the end there. There's also the hairpin but I don't see no ring so that's gotta wait, I guess. No confession but I can understand that since they didn't focus much on Shuuichi to begin with. Still want to see a bit more of the adult life of Kumiko so let's hope KyoAni blesses us with a proper epilogue in the form of an OVA or something.

Overall, this was a mostly satisfactory final episode for both this season and the series as a whole. When I saw the episode length, I was so afraid they were actually going to skip the national performance as well, and if that happened, I would have lost it. Fortunately, they don't, and the performance was pretty good. I'm glad they won the gold after all this time. Though, I was perplexed at the lack of Asuka (and Mamiko). That was weird given that everyone else showed up. They could've at least showed her watching from her TV or something.

It was nice to see Kumiko pass down Sound Euphonium to Kanade and Mayu. It was also nice to see Kuniko as a teacher at Kitauji. Kumiko lookin fine as an adult btw. I don't even mind that Kuniko seemingly got together with Shuuichi in the end. The constant yuri baiting in this show regarding Kumiko and Reina had always annoyed me as a yuri fan. But after this season, I'm actually glad they didn't end up together. Because I don't like Reina at all, and I don't think she deserves Kumiko. I've never cared that much for Shuuichi (Kyoani clearly didn't either) but he's a better choice for Kumiko. He was at least supportive of her throughout this season. KumikoxKanade is still the best Kumiko ship though, and you can't change my mind.

I would have loved to see Reina finally confess her love to Taki and get utterly rejected by him. Then she'd really know how it feels to work so hard only to have your dream ending be entirely crushed by your so-called most precious person. You know, like how Kumiko felt these last two episodes. In fact, that's gonna be my head canon ending from now on.

All in all, I still liked this season overall, but I do think it's the weakest of the franchise.
@shiki343 I want you to know that after using MyAnimeList for half a year, I finally actually signed up for it just to tell you how much I liked your comment on episode 13, especially the part regarding Reina and Taki. I saw in your review that you're glad Reina and Komiko didn't end up together, because Reina doesn't deserve her. I do agree with that, but despite that, I wish they did. Or at the very least, I wish they didn't have that stupid bit with Reina saying she's still going to confess her love for Taki. I'll probably make a full post about this later, but Reina only has a childhood crush on Taki, that's it. She's had maybe 30 seconds of conversation with him over the whole series, let alone anything as deep and personal as she has on practically a daily basis with Komiko. Taki's had more (and more heartfelt) conversations with Komiko than he has with Reina. Reina knows pretty much nothing about Taki and has zero relationship with him. It's a childhood crush that's still lingering from middle school, not love. It comes across as no different than having a crush on some movie star. And on Taki's part, he's given ZERO indication that he thinks of her AT ALL, let alone as something more than one of his students. (When she tells Komiko she's still going to try for him after college, Komiko should have laughed and said "Jeez, you're a f**ing idiot!") Contrary to her total lack of relationship with Taki, she HAS built a solid and real relationship with Komiko, the kind that, if one of them were male, would make every single fan of the show insist on them ending up together. I haven't seen a better love story in a long time, even accepting that, as you pointed out in your review, that Reina hasn't changed or grown. A movie where they're together and Reina has to grow and learn to be a better person to deserve Komiko would be great.

One more thing: At the very least, couldn't they at least have Komiko and Reina enjoying the win together for a moment? After all they've been through for over three years of their lives, and nearly a decade of ours, can't we see them celebrate together, smiling and crying tears of joy, and hug??? Couldn't they have proudly stood before each other and said "we did it?" (And if not that, how about a tearful scene with Komiko and Asuka?)

Sorry for the lengthy rant.

PS: If MyAnimeList doesn't let you post a comment until you've been a member for three days, why the F do they let you type one???? So, just so you know, I wrote this comment on 7/6/24 and it sat waiting for several days.

Well, I finally deigned myself to watch this and yep. It was just as expected. The band finally won gold but I didn't feel anything because of the incredibly anticlimactic change in story they made last episode. Seriously, I couldn't have felt more disinterested by that soli between Reina and NPC Kuroe. What a way to ruin one of your biggest titles, huh? KyoAni?

Pretty lacking season to conclude an almost 10-year long project. The decision of condensing Kumiko's third year into 13 episodes was simply nonsensical and as a result, pacing throughout the season ended up feeling all over the place. Alongside that, lots of performances were skipped, new characters that were introduced this season had little-to-no development while other already established characters lost relevance and then there is Kuroe, whose only purpose as character was to be the catalyst for some of the most underdeveloped and cheapest drama this franchise has ever offered. And all because the author couldn't think of a better way to approach Kumiko's third year than bringing back most of the challenges she already faced during her first year, which of course, were already tackled in Season 1 and 2 in a way more satisfying way. *sigh*

Honestly, it's a shame to see such solid franchise concluding this way. I will never understand why the studio decided to compress Kumiko's second and third year + changing the soli outcome out of nowhere. Due to this, it's no doubt that Hibike! Euphonium peaked at Season 1 and 2, and proceeded to go progressively downhill afterwards.

No wonder mean scores aren´t trustful at all xD

This anime is unbearable to watch and yet here I am. I am the main character in all of this... the Hero who managed to tank it all.
This anime waving from super empty and boredom to super forced melodrama.

That teacher is also probably one of the most unlikable characters I have ever seen - what is his name again, by the way?
The new student also does not help much in this regard.

What about Reina? She would rather go against her best friend just to protect/support her "perfect" sensei. This whole crush on him is just plain stupid.

Anyway, this franchise full of hypocrisy is finally over.

I was so excited that finally the last season of my favourite serie is here.
Then they massacred it and gave us a mediocre season with terrible ending. At least i know that this is not the real ending, so at least i can hope that maybe they will remake it. :/

Like a lot of people, I felt this season was rushed. So I think we have a major "show, don't tell" problem. I felt I was told Mayu was more suited for the solo piece but wasn't shown that should be the case. Especially since Mayu is essentially an avatar for Kumiko's past self. If Kumiko, over three years was supposed (and shown) to be influenced by Reina's drive and enthusiasm, then the less passive and more assertive "Kumiko" should have been the one to win the solo. I feel like the story was telling me that the past "Kumiko" was the superior player.

I understand that Kyoani wanted to make us feel the same frustration as Kumiko and her friends, and they do a very good job of it (much like the boredom you feel during the endless 8). I just wish, in this series, that that emotional resonance was either earned or fit the flow of the overall story telling.

Now I don't mind Mayu winning. If I were dotting out plot points to write a story, I think it is the better choice. But I would have needed to feel that Mayu was holding back how good she really was and that Kumiko's pep talk right before the final audition was what broke down Mayu's barriers. And then Mayu would give an objectively better performance. This would have solidified Kumiko's role as the one person (not Reina, not Taki-sensei) that was able to elevate the ensemble from "great" to the "best". Which would be fine, because being president left her with so much on her plate there is no way her practice wouldn't suffer because of it (essentially Kumiko could have given a better performance if she sacrificed the needs of the band for the sake of here solo). If only i had been shown something along any of these lines.

Basically I feel like we could have had that superior emotional moment, but ended up with contrived and emotionally manipulative one. With the number on culprit being too few episodes.

Also, definitely didn't get enough epilogue. Needed a graduation scene and a confession scene. I would have been fine without a confession scene but there was plenty of set up for it, so its absence was definitely felt.

Sooooo I have to headcanon that my girl Kanade got to be the new club president? Or at least vice-president? If not her, who got these roles?
I guess we'll never now, because all we should've cared about was seeing them win the gold, not getting a proper closure like... maybe the graduation day, or final words between Kumiko and the first and second year girls she helped before... right? /s

Yes, it's amazing that their hard work paid off and finally won the gold, but I don't think that's all that was to this series, so the ending felt kinda empty for me...
As another user mentioned, maybe a final hug between Kumiko and Reina at least??

I dunno, it was too rushed and that's a bummer, a great series like this could've ended deservingly better

It might have been me you're referring to about a hug between Kumiko and Reina; I did mention it at least, but others may have too. I 100% agree with you that winning the gold was not all there was to the series. To me it was one of the LEAST important things. This was a series about Kumiko growing up. The gold at Nationals was just the vehicle to do that. The gold at Nationals was, as it's often called in storytelling, the MacGuffin. It's the thing everyone wants, that sets the story in motion. Or, since they put it better than I can, here's what Wikipedia says: "an object, device, or event that is necessary to the plot and the motivation of the characters, but insignificant, unimportant, or irrelevant in itself." Therefore I was letdown by the final episode ending with the win and not the character's stories resolved. I don't consider the time skip ending to be any kind of resolution, because we need to see interaction between the characters in order to resolve everything that has come before, not just a "Oh, she's doing great, and she got a job," etc.

I think that when fans of the show discuss the show, the things they talk about 95% of the time is the characters, favorite scenes between the characters, who's their favorite, who they hope stays friends (or more), etc. What I think they talk about the least is the Nationals. Sure, it's rewarding when a character has a goal and achieves that goal. But that's because we like and understand the character, we're invested in their lives. I'm sure we've all had friends who've had a goal that didn't (in and of itself) matter to us, but we REALLY wanted our friend to succeed.

Maybe this will sound like a weird analogy, and I guess it is, but it's like how a good mystery ends. It doesn't end when you find out the killer. That's almost irrelevant. What we really want to know at the end is why the killer did it, how the killer did it, and how the hero solved it. Because murder mysteries are not really about the deceased, they're about the living characters.

Or, look at a film like Raiders of the Lost Ark. The ark in that film is the MacGuffin. It's what sets the story in motion. But the film is actually about Indy and Marion, and the character growth that Indy has is in relation to love. So much so that at the end he gives up on destroying the ark in order to save Marion.

Euphonium is about Kumiko and her character growth, her relationships with the people around her, set against a backdrop of the Nationals. It's not about the Nationals, at least in terms of that being the only thing that the ending should fully cover.

Really all that's left was to go to the Nationals. I'm glad they got gold and Reina and Kumiko can leave high school on a high!

Not showing they playing the entire piece like in season 2: 9/10. It would've been transcendent.

Nice to see a complete (more or less) adaptation of the series. What's not nice would be the changes and removals from the source material, as it always is with adaptations.

Reina is a failure as a leader. Blindly following everything your superior says despite the doubts of your underlings is what leads to authoritarian regimes and dictatorships, causing the already bad morale to get worse, during the events after the second audition.

Mayu did nothing wrong. In my opinion, episode 12 was bad and unnecessary, made just to pay homage to the events of season 1. There had already been so many tears shed by the characters throughout the season that I was honestly just sick and tired of it by episode 12. Besides, Kumiko had already made up her mind about her future plans, so her reasoning of not being able to play perfectly due to her "hesitation about maybe going to music school" felt really made-up by the writers. With how they shifted events around, it made sense for Mayu to take the soli even though I would have preferred Kumiko. With how Satsuki lost the first audition due not to her skill but loudness, I guess we can't really say "At Kitauji, meritocracy is everything" anymore.

Feels bad for Tsukamoto, the guy couldn't even have a photo of him and Kumiko during the end credits, where they were showing the members rejoicing in getting gold at the venue outside. The most he got was the hairpin on adult Kumiko (which Kumiko returned back in year 2, asking him to give it to her again after they were done with the club if he still have feelings for her then). And what is with the "Hazuki and Midori both found jobs" at the end there? It felt like that line was just added-on. I would have guessed Midori would be a professional contrabass player with how much she liked it (and I assume she got into a music university through recommendation)...

Overall, nice adaptation I guess.

I always thought this was a good series but I can see that I've grown to love it over the last decade as evident by my personal ratings - I gave the first two seasons 7s and the continuation movies 8s which led to me loving this finale season rating it a 9.

The craft and care that KyoAni puts into this show just really hit me hard this time around. At this point, I don't remember if the show has always been "this good" but I assume it's the emotional investment/connection with these characters over the years has really just brought it to the next level for me as time went on.

Beautiful conclusion to the franchise! I've been caught up with the series for over 5 years and there's been no looking back since, this is an incredibly powerful story and I'm absolutely grateful to Takeda Ayano-sensei and Kyoto Animation for bringing us this to light. Thank you, Hibike! Euphonium. Kumiko-chan trying to come to terms from last episode's ordeal and be upset over it was so genuine. Be proud of yourself and hold your head high, you've earned more than enough to see eye-to-eye with Reina-chan.

Flashbacks during the performance really felt like a journey showing her self-reflection in particular from start to finish. There's been so many fabulous moments from the series, and I will dearly miss it all. But in the end, it's finally time for Kitauji High School to taste victory and reap the goods they deserve. Reina-chan in complete shock is testament, she never let the occasion get to her (except when Taki-sensei was involved xD). School competitions are a silly thing indeed, thanks for making me realise this.

Subtle closure to the Kumiko x Shinichi ship ad that was pretty much it in the romantic side of things. Would've liked to see the skipped content, it'd be nice if they could include it in the Specials to come. It's good to hear that Hazuki-chan and Sapphire-chan have found their own occupations and it's no surprise that Reina-chan is still there in the US. She's a bona fide genius, after all. Kumiko-chan's taken her own team to gold and it's time to follow Taki-sensei's lead next. I doubt it'll happen immediately but she'll probably get it down pat in due time. I can imagine the once-in-a-while phone calls she must be having with Reina-chan, it was established they wouldn't break contact at all or at least that' how I viewed it.

I'd my little issues with the season, namely the pace up and the lack of musical elements in previous episodes, but that's for another day. Mayu-san ended up adding a new layer to the show and that ended up being very fitting. Mad credits to Kumiko-chan's VA too, the voice cracks made it so much more impactful during the delivery of peak emotional moments not just this season but throughout! Very well deserved strong 8/10 from here.
