The 1st episode being a movie length was a surprise, it was slow paced, but the right kind of slow and the end ended with a good start to season 3.

Perfectly paced first episode that sets up all the pieces for a potentially action heavy arc. I can't believe we are gonna have all these major characters turn up in one place and then face an attack by the Witch Archbishops. The potential here is insane for all kinds of developments.

@Nafis_Syed It's not that I just relish nightmare fuel for the sake of it. I just thought that half of the episode was pretty slow paced with a lot of exposition but also a lot of needless coming and goings of several characters that felt inconsequential. I lost track of all the lolis that showed up and had to pause twice to check the wiki to read who they were and why they were important (if at all).
@Farabeuf I suppose that's fair for an opinion, but I will say this tho. The SOL we had this episode, even if it was slow-paced and had a lot of exposition which will be needed for future events per se, will be the only time we can have a proper breather before of what's to come and I do not say this lightly as a WN/LN reader of the series by the way.

@Nebucad it's more like, something called reputation. If you've read 3 volumes of berserk, you get a gist of what to expect and how the 4th volume will be, that's something re:zero has constantly delivered since it's release till the end of arc 4. Although yea it's true, arc 5 is a dip in quality compared to the previous arcs, still they're Hyped up. It's thier choice to change thier rating with Every Episode or Rate it all at once...... what's the problem?
As for those who writing negative reviews, they're equivalent to non-existent if you don't respond to them. As for those who're rating it so high, they're just expecting something they've experienced before yk..... it'll keep on changing eps by eps, don't worry too much.

Re:Zero S3E1

My feelings toward this opening are mixed.

For the most part, I was disappointed by its quality. From the very beginning, it feels like a continuation of the story-telling issues from season 2. There isn’t a hook or clear direction for this episode, it is mainly exposition. That is completely understandable given it’s the beginning of an entirely new arc, however, even then it’s executed poorly. Important details were simply told to the audience via dialogue lacking visual aid or subtlety. Moments of characterisation felt rushed through, failing to capture my empathy and thus feel engaged with said characters.

Garfiel especially suffers from this issue, given his characterisation in season 2 was already subpar. At the same time, the portrayal of his self-perceived insufficiency is not done effectively. It is too easy for him to move on from the problem, there is a significant lack of struggle on his end. Similarly, as much as I love Wilhelm’s character, too much of the conflict between him and Reinhard are explained in dialogue, failing to fully capture the tension between them.

The idea that there was another character of Japanese origin before Subaru also suffered from the poor execution, with it simply being revealed in a single line of thought. It is not even delivered in a questionable tone, but rather with confidence and a lack of intrigue.

It was incredibly hard thus to remain focused. If I were to compare it to anything, it reminded me of the beginning of the Namek Saga in Toriyama’s Dragon Ball Z manga.

That is not to say there wasn’t any moments that were commendable. I did enjoy the late night discussion between Wilhelm van Astrea and Subaru. The introduction of Liliana was also done quite well. Although, the humor felt awkward most of the time, I also did enjoy some of the jokes.

What I loved about this episode the most was the ending.

The general ‘slice-of-life’ moments shared between the characters set an enjoyably ‘happy go-lucky’ tone that lulled me into a false sense of security. During the reveal of the next Sin-Archbishop, their theatrical; non-threatening attitude combined with that security, conflicted with my knowledge that such figures are meant to be terrifying. This was further reinforced by the unassuming soundtrack, which initially made her appear insignificant. Although I didn’t realize at the time, this emotional confusion was a perfect reflection of her character, dangerous yet manipulative.

What interested me the most was how her audience reacted. At first, they appeared not to take her seriously and neither did I due to the aforementioned circumstances. When she revealed a tied up child, however, I did. Yet, they didn’t - not even Subaru. It finally encouraged me to be actively engaged, by asking questions about what was happening in the moment. Then it was revealed that they were somehow under her control. My curiosity was satisfied and I felt genuinely afraid for the characters, given how helpless they appeared. Then they all died after she killed the child, adding more mystery to fuel that curiosity.

Subaru resets. His shocked expression and nausea make it evident he was conscious the entire time. The severity of the conundrum is solidified and the episode ends.

We have returned to the exhilarating nature I fell in love with in the first season. I am looking forward to with excitement to the next episode.

90 minutes with most of this being exposition, I'm glad we have that out of the way, and can get into the action of this arc. Subaru has a lot of work on his plate in order to deal with not 1 but at least 2 archbishops, including Regulus who they bumped into who we know is quite OP. Surely with the help of Reinhard things will be fine.

Overall it was a rather boring episode. Too slow and nothing was happening until the very end. Perhaps that's why they made such a long episode: instead of having 3 boring episodes in a row, they made just one. I hope it will be better paced for the future episodes.

9.01 for this? Are rezero fans okay in the head? This is what they consider the peak of the series? A 90 minute fanservice reunion special where nothing happens except the last five minutes?

It was smart of them to merge the first four episodes into a single special. Just imagine if you had to sit through FOUR weeks of nothing happening except old characters getting together and Subaru acting like insufferable cringelord. This would have been the absolute low point of the series, yet people rated it higher than any other rezero season or movie.
@Yang_Wenli We can't really do much since this series has so many fanboys here who rate anything even closely related to Re:Zero with 10/10, no matter the quality. Even worse, they feel like everyone else who dares to criticize their favorite show are obvious haters and they also act haughty to anyone who didn't read the novel.

I mean I like this series but not to the point I would be uncritical to it as it also has it share of flaws. Credit where credit is due.

S2 and both movies was actually pretty good (a lot better than S1).
But that's exactly why I was disappointed here because I had some expectations which certainly weren't met.
I mean, I know I would be disappointed if I saw this episode in theatre.
It pales greatly in comparison with, for example, Memory Snow which also had the same slice-of-life focus but still managed to deliver enjoyable self-contained story and still dropped some serious foreshadowing.

I know I will rate some episodes higher if they get better.
But by rating 10/10 right now those fans are basically saying that as long it's Re:Zero it doesn't matter how good or bad each episode is.
It also means there is no room for improvement in their eyes.
All the people who are singing the unconditional praise here - imagine if they would cut last five minutes - would you still rate it the same?

tl;dr: Current high-scores on this season are nothing but hype.

---------------------------------------------------------------

On completely unrelated note - I still don't understand why Garfiel's supposed mother is calling her daughter onee-chan. Even if she has obviously lost her memories of him it makes no sense to call her own child that, right? (and subs even put her name in instead, even though it wasn't even mentioned in the original). I can imagine very specific situation in japanese when mother would call her daughter like that (as in, replying to overheard topic) but she actually addressed Rafiel here in this scene, otherwise she wouldn't be asking a question whether Fred already came back or not in the first place.

@Mich666 To be frank I'm not a fan of SoLs and I almost fell asleep while trying to catch every dialogue and detail. I still think I missed some cuz the yapping is crazy. The only part that really grabbed my attention and excited me was the last 10 minutes and I was surprised to see many people rated 10s already which I don't agree with yet.

But even so, to say the first 80 minutes were worthless means that person either is disingenuous or watched Re:Zero too passively. As an anime-only, I think this episode reintroduced the cast and the character dynamics pretty well. Reinhard despite being the strongest still has family issues and I like how Felt helped him bounce back. Garfiel struggles with feeling of incompetence and childhood trauma. It seems Anastasia was plotting something here by baiting everyone into coming like how Roswaal pulled the strings behind all events in 2 seasons.

It also dropped some crazy lore hints. For example the Japanese inn with modern technologies and the revelation of Hoshin who seemingly influenced the Kararagi by Jap culture for 400 years mean Subaru wasn't the only and earliest one to get isekai-d. It's sus that Hoshin designed the whole city as a trap for something much like how Flugel randomly planted the tree for Subaru to take down the White Whale. I just wished the lore dump wasn't too in-your-face and Subaru didn't directly confirm it. And knowing Re:Zero it won't be utilized until like several seasons later. Still idk how some people here didn't find them strange and just brushed it off as Jap glazing.

I feel the first episode is mostly set-up to be resolved in later episodes and I could already see some Chekhov's guns here and there. It isn't meant to be viewed as a self-contained standalone movie in theatre. I hope and trust the payoffs will be worth the snoozefest that is the first 80 minutes. I mean even Steins;Gate first few episodes put me into sleep and made me drop the show twice before I realize how important they are.

@Mich666 The version I watched on Muse translated it as "Dear". I think instead of calling her daughter by name the mother used "onee-chan" as an alternative way to address her older child of the sibling. Similarly, a few second earlier Garfiel calling Rafiel "nee-chan" doesn't mean Garfiel called his own sister or he thought Rafiel is older than him. After all in Japanese the identification of the subject and the objects in a sentence depends heavily on the context.

@newluminous Yeah, saying "Dear" would be probably the best in this situation. I also understand why Garfiel was calling her nee-chan as those honorifics are generally used to address strangers younger/older than you (generally if their name is unknown). Or he could call her nee-chan as person related to her younger brother he was bringing home.

But the problem here is not with translation but rather with how her mother addressed her in the original japanese since:
a) she's her mother so she would know her name and would address her directly by Rafiel or Rafiel-chan or Rafi-chan.
b) Rafiel certainly isn't her sister as she is obviously her mother so calling her onee-chan is really weird.
c) she didn't know Fred was back until she came out (which is why she was asking the question) so in that case she definitely wouldn't address Rafiel as "(Fred's) sister" (which would be gramatically correct otherwise as unspoken part could be implied from her question).

Anyway, I might be nitpicking here but this seems like a mistake happened sometime during the production. Not sure how she addressed her in the novel.

@Okeanix even tho I'm a web movel reader, I will always argue that Re:Zero anime is a PERFECT LIGHT NOVEL ADAPTATION (apart from 86), you can't ask for anymore. I was satisfied with what was being served. They did the BEST MOMENTS JUSTICE.
Feel free to hate on yourself. Re:Zero. Arc 3 adaptation was still on point for me.
Also, the story will exactly remain the same in arc 5. Not a big fan of fights, I like re:zero for it's narrative and introspection of the characters and their dynamics. Beautifully shown in arc 3. Arc 5 surely expands the story, but lacks the Depth that Arc 3,4 & 6 has.

It had alot of setup things and dialogue which were not too interesting. Though ultimately this is great as we can now get straight into the action in episode 2 as opposed to having
3 more episodes of uneventful dialogue. Though it could also be said that the slower dialogue filled episode would have been more palatable as three episodes instead of one singular long slog. Weirdly enough I personally felt that certain scenes were progressing far too fast in this episode. But that might just be me. Doing a really long first episode to get the setup out of the way was the right move in my opinion. They went harder on the lolicon stuff then they usually do with the introduction of a new loli character. The end of episode fight was interesting which helped make up for all the slower buildup. I kind of miss the old more angular designs, I'm struggling to get used to Subaru's new rounded face. The design changes are fairly subtle, but still noticeable, especially if the previous seasons are fresh in your mind. Overall, the production qualities felt like a great improvement over previous season.
