Dandadan Episode 1 Discussion

Gonna be honest, people are overhyping this first episode. 8.8 on Mal... people got to calm down. The Op is amazing, but again its Creepy Nuts, so its gonna be. The thing I dont like about the Op is that it does not feel like the timing of the OP fits with the song. Clips feel out of Rhythm with the Song. That's just a small critic of mine. The first episode was good, animation felt a little choppy in a few areas. But its meant to with this style of animation. They very much threw you right in, so it was hard to understand what everything was. Like I didnt even know who Ken was to her, I still dont. But overall a solid first episode 8/10. The overhype is gonna be a bit much for this show though. Itll probably get like an 8.9 after more scores come in, when its probably an 8 at max. That's what an OP can do for you.

Science Saru has some pedigree behind it. But on the level of modern Shonen? There they still had something to prove.

With Madhouse on Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, Wit Studio on Spy x Family, IG Production on Kaiju no 8, and Clover Works on Elusive Samurai we are in a new age of Shonen getting incredible powerhouse productions. Even when maybe Elusive Samurai didn't earn that match made in heaven production team comparing it to more successful Shonen Jump entries it's still incredible and stellar that it exists but when it comes to Jump adaptations it can be a crap shoot. While Yozakura Family get Silver Link and faulter, Blue Box gets Telecom Animation Film which has a lot to prove itself (fingers crossed). and let's just hope and see what Sakamoto Days gets with TMS Entertainment, which delivered a mostly good but uneven production of Dr Stone.

I'm blown away so far. I would never have pegged Dandadan as a great Science Saru anime. Maybe after the normal shonen anime look I was cautiously worried. There is great variety in anime style but Science Saru has a Capital "L" Look to it. A lot of the studio's portfolio comes from it's former history as Masaki Yuasa's studio which added to its specific in-house weirdness. They've split creatively and have been making less than mid-budget projects since (except Heike) but always maintain that loosey goosey vibe.

Boy have they married weird abstract arthouse vibes with punchy exciting action/horror. And OF COURSE because this is DANDADAN!!! I mean if there was any shonen anime to take some creative oddball liberties with the traditional anime look it SHOULD be this anime. And while first episodes are not indicators of quality across the board (Kaiju no 8 cough cough) there is something uniquely spirited about this anime's production feel that makes me happy.

It looks incredible but doesn't seem "WOW that's impossible to animate". Take more liberty with creative angles, editing, and transitions. The interpretation of movement feels more revolutionary than the actual quality of the movement. But also still very high quality too! If this turns out to be a high-load for the animators I wouldn't be surprised but if it turns out to be lower than the average work-load compared to other shonen episodes I also would NOT be surprised either.

Also... holy sh*t Creepy Nuts does NOT miss. Also hilarious they got Creepy Nuts on the OP considering the plot of the show ;)
