Always heard about the manga, is very interesting that the animation is just in black and white, so it resembles the manga as well. Interesting and mysterious plot.

Finally a suspense/horror anime that's not shipped with second hand embarasment.

Really great production values from the rotoscoped animation cuts to really immersive sound design and soundtrack (watching this with headphones is probably the best choice).

The voice acting in the beginning of the episode felt kinda wonky, but I guess that's part of the bizarre narrative this town and it's citizens hold.

I hope we get more than 4 episodes in future seasons if we're going to get this kind of quality thru and thru.

Hmm I know it will be creepy for sure.

One done, three to come. Let's see how it goes.
I need somebody who can love me at my worst
No, I'm not perfect, but I hope you see my worth
'Cause it's only you, nobody new, I put you first
And for you, girl, I swear I'll do the worst

If you stay forever, let me hold your hand
I can fill those places in your heart no else can
Let me show you love, oh, I don't pretend, yeah
I'll be right here, baby, you know I'll sink or swim

I was vaguely reminded of the "Aku no Hana" anime here. I had no idea it was the same guy lol!

@ChaChaVan It is, director I think? Their rotoscoping technique was the unique edge added to production that apparently most everyone is mistaking for CGI.

First episode! Just... two things:
1) It's literally the manga in motion.
2) The things were... a bit faster?
@Valen_D_20 is not a full season is only 4 episodes they need to fit as much as they can

i don't understand people enjoying this this was a very negative experience for me. I like the manga, its nice, its creepy, its grabbing, this is just none of those things. the rotoscoped cgi doesn't look good in any scene and constantly pulls me out of the experience. why does this even exist? like genuinely what is the point? why does this anime need to exist when the manga is right there? The manga is more detailed, it leaves more up to the imagination, it is more suspenseful because it leaves the viewer in control of how the characters sound, how they move, how the world exists, this is just deciding all of that for me and leaves me bleh. idk man, I just think it's pretty bad.

@Uuhhwyhwhe266 without affecting the pace? The whole Timeline was mixed up. I guess you didn't notice, the quick cuts inbetween different stories, it feels unnatural, Kirie is at multiple places so frequently....they didn't follow a linear approach and it kinda mixed up the stories, moreover the episode length was short, so it didn't work to build the tension and tie 🪢 the stories up simultaneous.

Hands down one of the best single episodes of anime. It was a perfect adaptation of the stories. I loved how they were able to weave them together into such a solid narrative that kept the pressure on and constantly building. I feel the spiral in to horror.

TIME TO YAP (or rant maybe)

Some of the best I’ve ever seen in the industry, even when compared to non-anime productions. I would confidently rank it above others, especially considering how faithful this adaptation is and the atmosphere it successfully conveys throughout the series. Without a doubt, this is the best Junji Ito adaptation ever. Beyond its faithfulness and the evident care put into it, I love how unique it has become and the way it replicates the black-and-white style of the manga and transforms it into a visual masterpiece is remarkable—something that must be experienced before you die. Calling it highly impressive is an understatement—this is sheer perfection for a series like this. It’s exactly what was needed because everything about it is polished, professional, and captures the eerie tone the series is known for. Shunichi’s constant state of panic, just as he is in the manga, is portrayed flawlessly by the director. While Kirie isn't as frantic as Shunichi, she embodies the calm in the midst of the storm, only reacting when she witnesses the horror firsthand, just as she should in the manga. Other details, like Shunichi’s father sounding as unsettling as he should and his mother conveying PTSD after her husband's death, are spot on. Honestly, I could go on, but these are just a few examples I wanted to highlight in this thread. I agree and have to admit it’s a bit odd that they released four episodes when there are only 19 chapters to adapt but after watching it, I didn’t mind how it turned out. Honestly, it wouldn’t be that difficult to fit 19 chapters in if they maintain this level of quality, but I’m okay with how the four episodes are paced so far. The first episode does a solid job of covering almost three or four chapters, and the pacing feels right. Music is great. I didn’t have high hopes for Yuki Hayashi returning for another Junji Ito adaptation, but after hearing it, I think it works well with many of the scenes in the series, especially how dark and eerie it sounds. While Hayashi often creates more heroic or justice-driven tracks, as seen in My Hero Academia, I was initially concerned about how it would fit here but I believe it complements the animation perfectly, enhancing the unsettling atmosphere of the series. Calling it a great adaptation feels like an understatement YET AGAIN for this review. This is, without bias, my favorite Junji Ito work, and arguably one of his greatest pieces. I regret not going to the horror house exhibition in Thailand, but I adore this series, and it remains one of my favorite manga of all time. The adaptation is more faithful than any other I’ve seen, even if the pacing isn’t perfect. It was 100% worth the wait. The animation and art pay immense respect to his work, and the tone it maintains throughout the series is absolutely spot-on for this adaptation. Definitely an anime of the year contender.

You're yearning for an incredible horror anime at long last? Junji Ito truly stands as one of the masters of horror. Uzumaki is nothing short of a masterpiece horror manga, crafted by this legendary figure. Each of his works sends exhilarating chills down your spine, leaving you utterly unnerved. He is the japanese Stephen King.

The animation style is so beautifully suited to Uzumaki, and the decision to keep it colorless heightens the eerie atmosphere and tension, perfectly aligning with the dark and suspenseful narrative. It may have taken ages, but the animation quality is astonishing. It feels as though the manga has truly sprung to life, right off the page. This is precisely why it’s far better to delay a product than to hastily meet an original deadline. This is the adaptation that Junji Ito deserves. Thank you, Adult Swim.
And Colin Stetson was simply the perfect choice to compose the soundtrack for this, whoever had the brilliant idea to bring him on deserves a Nobel.

I can't wait for the

Went into this blind and found out that this is the perfect anime for October, aka spooky month. I can't recall watching a black & white anime before and this one was pretty unique not only because of the lack of color but also the atmosphere was really surreal and disturbing. Speaking of disturbing, the two scenes that made me the most uncomfortable were the mom cutting her fingertips off and finding the father's corpse twisted into a spiral in the large wooden drum, damn.

The obsessed girl Azami was also disturbing and I wonder if her and Shuichi's dad have (or had) the same spiral curse. Anyway, I enjoyed the first episode and look forward to watching this short series play out.

The styling they're going for really does better service to Junji Ito's legacy. While not perfect they are getting closer to capturing the creepy aura of his manga works.

The episode didn't feel rushed and delved right into the story dragging me in.

A very mystifying first episode. These spirals being so dangerous but so attractive is a major problem. One I hope Kirie and Shuichi are able to deal with.

Also, this show is so pretty to look at. That only makes the horror better! Poor Okada got sucked into a spiral looking for love.

After all the years of hype and waiting it’s finally here. No doubt the most unique anime I’ve ever seen. Genuinely terrifying first episode and the first ever anime to make me feel unsettled. I didn’t feel afraid per se, but this was a very uncomfortable episode.

The world is so eerie, kinda feels like the twilight zone or goosebumps. Almost makes you feel like you yourself are trapped in the world and being pulled into the spiral. The black and white colour palette and 2.5D animation really blend well here. Love how fluid the animation is as well, Krie playing with her hair at the start of the episode looked so good!

Seems like the story itself is progressing quite fast since they only have 4 episodes. You’d think they would’ve done more with the manga’s length, but oh well. Didn’t really have any time to breathe in this one as we’re thrown into the middle of the action. I hope Shuichi and Krie can survive, but something tells me shit is about to get a whole lot worse for them.

I've known about Junji Ito for a long time now, but this is pretty much my first exposure to his work. As someone whose only seen a handful or so horror series in his lifetime, that was fantastic.

Spirals are never going to be the same for me by the end of this, ain't it? But to be able to create horror out of spiral is really amazing, my jaw definitely started dropping as I got farther in the episode.

Pretty good. They really did a nice job with the atmosphere in some of the scenes. Very gloomy and ominous.

My only concern is that it's only four episodes long (?) according to MAL. I flipped through the manga and they covered around 3 of the chapters so far. They didn't have every scene from those chapters in there and there's one scene from chapter 8 so they're mixing scenes around. I just hope they pick the right scenes to depict moving forward if they're not covering everything because the manga gets really fucked up later on if I remember correctly. The early chapters were incredibly tame by comparison.

I love this so much. The attention to detail for each character/action is amazing. You can tell how much love the team had for Uzumaki and how much effort they put into it. I don't hate that there are instant transitions between chapters. It kind of plays like the manga. The next chapter always feeling like a change of scene and pace. This is peak and I love it so much.

Holy hell that was an amazing representation of the manga in anime form. They nailed the art and atmosphere. My main complaint is that it just felt too fast. I really wish the episode was 45 minutes and it would have been perfect. How they intertwined the stories feels perfectly fine, but it just needed more time to smooth out the pacing. Still, I absolutely loved it and and can't wait for the rest.

If you’re a fan of psychological horror, Uzumaki delivers an unsettling and surreal start with its debut episode. Set in the eerie town of Kurouzu-cho, the story revolves around a growing obsession with spirals that seems to have a strange and terrifying effect on its inhabitants. The episode immediately pulls you into a world of bizarre occurrences without much explanation, which adds to the mysterious and haunting tone.

The art style is one of the highlights—staying faithful to the original manga by Junji Ito, it uses a striking black-and-white color palette that really enhances the sense of dread. There’s also a noticeable mix of hand-drawn and CGI animation, which might take some getting used to, but it works to create an otherworldly atmosphere. The animation is smooth, and the unsettling visuals are definitely memorable.

While the episode is filled with creepy and strange moments, it doesn’t provide much in terms of character development or plot explanation right away. We’re thrust into the madness of the town’s spiral obsession, which can be confusing, but it does leave you curious about what’s coming next. It’s clear the show is more about building a sense of dread and mystery rather than giving answers upfront, which might not be for everyone.

If you enjoy slow-burn horror with bizarre and grotesque visuals, Uzumaki offers a strong opening, though it may not grab viewers looking for more character-driven storytelling right away. Overall, Episode 1 is weird, creepy, and visually striking, but I’m hoping future episodes will flesh out the plot and characters more.

Loved the manga, love this as well and can't wait for the next one(s)!

People complaining about the CGI: Is it really CGI or was it just rotoscope? And if it was CGI, why the fuss about it every time some title uses it? Honestly, curious.

People complaining about pacing: If the anime adaptation followed the manga to the 'T', I believe it would become incredibly boring and a drag to watch.
I don't believe Junji Ito's work translates to anime as well as people would like to think. He's a genius storyteller on paper and this adaptation (so far) is honestly the best way I can think of honoring and paying homage to his brilliance.

The animation was absolutely gorgeous, can't wait to see more of everyone's work. I also think it was a good idea to connect beginnings of different stories into single episode, adapting it 100% faithfully to the manga wouldn't fit the format, hopefully it'll get a lot of people hooked.
