3) No, again see reason 1). Yaoi and yuri are intimately tied into sexuality unlike other genres.

@NoelleIsSleepy what didn't click with you when it comes to mecha? Maybe you just keep seeking out the wrong kind of show. Also applies to everybody else who's saying "mecha".

@Euhi I just don't know what the hell is it that people see in 86. It's a serviceable mecha show but that's just it.

Totally sports and idol animes. Idol animes have some exceptions like Oshi no Ko and Zombieland, but I really really cannot deal with sports ones. Just not for me I guess. Maybe I should try more of them like I did with idol animes.

@TheMechaManiac I believe it's the interaction between Shin (the male MC) and Handler One that made it interesting. Personally, what I found attractive in the show was the fact that they were only connected and communicated via voice call. They didn't know each other personally nor had seen each other's faces. So it was interesting to see how their relationship slowly developed while fighting the war.

@Yonahim_Zz This season's "Tadaima, Okaeri" is indeed the first omegaverse anime, that's how I learned about the existence of this subgenre.
@Nirinbo
It is a pretty mild element in the show so far outside of casual mention of things.

isekai, harem, reverse harem, otome, those genres are kinda wish fullfillment-y in ways I don't like. Also mecha and war related or historical stuff, it can be pretty dry. I only really like the more fantastical stuff in those genres. Police procedurals and mysteries as well.

There aren't any genres I would outright avoid, now, but I'm the least interested in:

Sports-I don't play or watch sports and generally find them boring (Liked Initial D, Redline, Chihayafuru, overdrive and a few more)
Magical girl- Generally full of cringe (Like Madoka Magica, Lyrical Nanoha, and Spec-Ops Asuka)
Shounen-ai/Yaoi- I'm a straight dude (Didn't mind No. 6, Heaven Official's Blassing)
Shoujo-ai/Yuri- Same as above (liked Destiny of the Shrine Maiden, Candy Boy)
"The name's Gambit. Remember it."

@TheMechaManiac Haha your name made me laugh!

Well...... so far I've watched:

86
aldnoah zero
darling in the franxx
escaflowne
flcl (although does this one count as mecha??? I did give it a 10)
full metal panic
guilty crown (I so don't remember this one being mecha)
saijaku muhai no bahamut
sidonia no kishi (this one wasn't bad actually)
gurren lagann (I respect it, even if I couldn't get into it)
code geass
kuromukuro (I think I just liked the characters)
evangelion (there's other themes in there to love)

All in all... it's not that I hate mecha, I just have zero interest in it and I can't tell you why. Similar deal w/ space and some sci-fi even. I would be open to recommendations though!

1. Battle shounen - did not appeal to me since I was a kid. There is something about them that they are generally not my cup of tea.

2. I did watch Chainsaw Man. I found Season 01 okay.

3. If it deals with themes/topics that are interesting to me and the show conveys them in the format of a typical battle shounen, perhaps.

I don't like overly grotesque things, so horror generally isn't for me. I used to feel similarly about violent shows but I've enjoyed some that I've watched over the years. I still don't seek those shows out. Something where the show is just generally depressing (like Bokura no) is generally something I pass on, unless there is some other quality that I'd enjoy (tragic romances are usually ok, though I like happy ones better).

Outside of that:

* Wacky/random humor - I'm not sure there are as many of these shows in the last few years or maybe I've gotten better at spotting and ignoring them. FLCL is probably the primary example that I can recall. I tried Baka to Test recently and I still felt similarly.
* Cute girls doing cute things - I like cute girls as much as anyone but I need some semblance of a plot or some general movement forward in some way.
* Slice of life - generally for the same reason as cute girls. Generally, if there's not some sort of progress, I get bored the shows. Something like Kino no Tabi would be an example.
* Boys Love / Girls Love - neither really interest me

I've shied away from drama recently, though I don't actively avoid it.

Comedy, Sports, Ecchi, Harem (and or including Reverse Harem), and Hentai.

Those are the main ones, but after those would be Mecha, Idol, Yaoi, and Yuri.

But I will and have watched any series either exclusively or partially of those genres still regardless if something contained in the premise laid out in the synopsis interests me enough.

The biggest exception is Kodomo no Jikan, which is partially an ecchi series and one of my favorites. Usually they have to do something which defies or exceeds what I expect as typical of those genres. In Kodomo no Jikan, it's the transgressive romance all the way.

For some sports series, it's because they manage to be effective impactful dramas apart from the convention of the sport itself and have an impressive visually distinct and unique flair, like Ping Pong the Animation, or just because it's one of the rare sports I actually care deeply for, as in the case of badminton with Hanebado! (and the almost parody-level melodrama of troubled schoolgirls helps there too).

So those are my known least favorites and they definitely stand out as such, but I'll still ultimately watch anything.

I should specify about comedy though, that I'm not referring to anime which have comedy in them - I don't mind or even dislike those, depending on what it is. Comedy with something else to provide more meat and substance to the story is fine and, again, depending on what we're talking about and how it's utilized, even most welcome. Like comedy as part of a series that also has drama, romance, action, adventure, horror, mystery, or some combination or all of the above. Then it can really enrich the plot and characters and add a fun dynamic, charm, and meaning to their interactions. When I say "Comedy" I'm basically referring to those exclusively gag-based type series which have very little to no plot apart from that and are just a string of jokes.

I hate Romance anime with a passion. Because they are SOOOOO DAMN unrealistic that Saitama existing in real life and being that strong is more believable than the romance crap in anime. Fracking lord of the rings is 100 times more realistic than anime romance. Yeah it´s anime they are not supposed to be realistic but seeing as romance is something that exist in real life well make it some what believable.

Also I HATE sad/depressing anime. If I want to be depressed I just read the news or look on what a shitty life I have.

(According to MAL's genres)

Gourmet. Maybe because both shows of the Genre I've seen were terrible, but also because I don't believe anime is the correct place for food shows. That's better left to actual cooking shows with actual food.

I could see myself give it a try if it had something that interests me. An example would be Astro Note, which might be a romance (second-least interesting genre to me), but also a comedy and looked very funny.

I wouldn't consider recommendations because I don't know anyone who shares my taste :D

I expected ecchi and harem to be somewhat constant here, but the amount of times mecha was mentioned...I knew people weren't into it, but I didn't think I was that much in the minority. At least as far as people posting in this thread go. Finally! Now I can act superior for liking something that isn't that popular. Kidding of course.

As for my answer; I'll technically give anything a shot if it has any of my favorite genre/themes attached to it. So really I only avoid your normal ass sports, romance, SoL, CGDCT, and idol series. Though that last one is a special case, because I usually don't like the idol thing in any situation. I couldn't even fully get into Zombieland Saga. This stems from my irrational hatred of musicals.

I have a like/hate relationship with romance anime, I often times want to like it, sometimes I even succeed, but most of the time I just end up very frustrated. Some genres are like this for me, I feel like they have a lot of potential but I rarely see it realized.

Another one is avant garde. Again, I want to like it, I want to see the authors try new and exciting things, but often time it seems like they use it as an excuse to do away with reason and create trippy visuals.

Ecchi is another. I wouldn't be caught dead complaining about anime titties but most ecchi are just so stagnant. The potential of what you could do is literally limitless and for the most part its always the same handful of tropes that we see. Worse still, sometimes you get these weird ecchi shows that borderline don't have anything sexual going on. Also, where is the ecchi for the girls hmm? We need a miru tights with forearms and abs yesterday, and I want an R18 OVA at the end with a d*ck reveal otherwise it doesn't count. I digress.

I saw a lot of people complaining about mecha, I think mecha is another one of these anime genres that has not perfected itself yet but I am not so displeased with it. Gunbuster and Code geass were both pretty good mechas from my point of view although the mecha aspect is not actually whats good about them hence the whole idea that mecha is an immature genre.

So yeah, I would totally be down to watch these genres but it can't be the same ol slop that we are used to. Honestly, even just ideas on how to make the genres work are interesting for me. I love thinking about the possibilities.
