Took me a while to finish this season, not only it was delayed during the airing, but then I was also trying to get into the right mood to finish it, knowing what is going to happen, I had seen ep7-9 (aka 18-20) a few weeks back, so I decided that I would see these last 3 episodes as a movie and it paid off, riding the momentum is how you should see this, not waiting weekly or monthly for the last few episodes to come out...
Fuck airing, fuck delays, and FUCK covid, but more so, thank god there was a delay to produce such quality with these final 2 episodes!
I adore the calm scenes at the start of the episode, they also include parts that I believe to be from volume 4, to bridge the gap to the scene from the end of vol.1 at the end, and all these talk about the special strike package is very briefly mentioned IF at all on volume 1, don't think it is on the 3rd volume.
This director knows what he is doing, while I don't want things to end with this season, at least we were given proper context to everything that was happening with Lena.
Seeing Eugene's sister in the cemetery smiling like that, had me thinking that slowly he is moving forth, even if Shin does not realize it, slowly processing his emotions is endearing to watch, and he finally found something to aim for, waiting to show them all that view, Lena included, something other than the battlefield, the sea!
His trauma is yet to be solved, and that will only be so in volume 5, I don't believe this new goal of his, was mentioned in either vol.1 or 3 either, so these tiny pieces of the future are being inserted together here are not a wrong decision IMO.
If the last episode left people nervous since he didn't meet Lena, this one skipping back and forth on the time scale, further leaves people desperate, to see if they are going give this season a proper sendoff, if you read the source you kinda expect a proper ending but are still nervous as well.
Up till the very end, they keep Lena unaware the squad had survived, sad to see her getting her hopes up about them due to the Para-Raid tech, being downcasted like that again, but it was only for a short time at least.
The kitty she had picked at the end of Part 1 as I recall, but then due to the invasion from the Legion Lena lost him in the conflict, kinda forgotten that happened, though she always had him after Part 1, thankfully he survived and meet her again, with that flashback at the end, of 86 first finding the same cat and Anju wishing he was that same cat, so endearing.
Leave it to the director to know how to properly finish this season, amazing work, such cheap words, because I repeat them so much, but this dude keeps delivering... showing the perspective of Fido, and setting up that theme song for their anticipated reunion, Lena's reaction did not disappoint, but it was also nice to see Shin smiling more than usual, and there was this distinct glow in his eyes alright!
No comment <3.
As far as a perfect closure goes, such was given to S1, leaving out the ending of vol.1 to display here in full splendor, was the right choice, though it hurt those that read the LN, after part 1.
Overall the adaptation of vol.1-3 for both parts is full of thoughtful choices, made thinking about how books could be at their prime in the anime medium, I don't think there was any way to surpass volume 1, the writing was impactful there like nothing I have read in LNs, but regardless Part 1 did a great job.
Volumes 2 and 3 are way weaker in the LN in comparison, to this adaptation, with Part 2, vastly surpassing the source material in the right scenes, conveying everything to the full potential of what you can do with visuals and sound, leaving their reunion to end it all wraps everything in the best way possible.
9.5/10 = 10
I m not going to nitpick and be feisty about giving it a 10, it fucking deserves it, Part 1 was already special, and what this achieved with Part 2 is what the series deserved, fully realized in anime, the director, the staff behind this adaptation, all the budget given to fully realize this vision, I m very thankful that so many miracles came together to give us such a masterpiece, we only got such a result because the people involved put tons of care and love to get this out with such quality.
I would love to see an S2, see them tackling what is ahead, Shin and Lena's development is far from over, but if left here, it was done with such finesse, I can't complain, just wonder what this director could have done with what is ahead~~

Precious comment right here as well!

Repeating the feat below again, I see ya. xD
A quick addition, forgotten to mention the OST for this series, I believe Sawano to have produced some better score, but this stands among some of his better work and the staff was able to make a really great usage from the soundtrack, whereas things like Shield Hero have such good score, poorly used in the adaptations...
Gotta gush Voices of the Chord usage again on last episode and loved all the themed songs for this last episode too, fits really well, in particular I loved the OP2, the OP for Part 2 so much! |
