Perfect Ending, Perfect Climax.
People spoiled me that they would met, but when I saw episode 11, I genuinely thought that they would met eye to eye in later Season or even probably at the end of the Novel. But damn, this caught me offguard.

The Ending couldn't get better than this.

I couldn’t stop laughing when Ernst is wearing a rain-deer hat but at least he got some fashion 😎 and this episode reminds me of the 2nd episode where it’s enjoyable full SOL arc for each of them but this one is a lot more memorable ;c

Shin visiting Eugene’s grave must be something hard and damn I know that white flowers Shin gave to his grave, symbolising undying love(?) (as in like best friends obv and I do kind of recall this scene similar in one of a episode from a different series where a guy gave a white flower to his one beloved person) 😭 and from all the aftermath, just gotta move forward and keep on fighting Shin the undertaker!

Yess, they also showed Lena’s perspective and she visits her father’s grave, not gonna lie her surrounding looks very hectic but that’s the effect from the battlefield after all, and anyways it’s nice to see she’s more livelier in her own town. Nice that they inserted the OP in the 2nd half, I love the camera type of style direction that they used once again, it's always interesting to detail using those every now and then, Juggernaut I mean fucking Fido is the best character we all need for that camera movement <3 Also there was a nice OST, Idk who is singing it but it's a very calm one! and FINALLY, A FACE TO FACE, YES, THAT'S ALL I NEED, I MAY NOW REST IN PEACE

After all the tragedy and war, just like that, the 2nd cour for the 1st season is over.. can’t live without 86.. 10/10 episode!

That was the one of the best anime i have ever watched. the story, the soundtracks, the emotions it gave, the Ending. It was fantastic. 10/10.

Took me a while to finish this season, not only it was delayed during the airing, but then I was also trying to get into the right mood to finish it, knowing what is going to happen, I had seen ep7-9 (aka 18-20) a few weeks back, so I decided that I would see these last 3 episodes as a movie and it paid off, riding the momentum is how you should see this, not waiting weekly or monthly for the last few episodes to come out...
Fuck airing, fuck delays, and FUCK covid, but more so, thank god there was a delay to produce such quality with these final 2 episodes!

I adore the calm scenes at the start of the episode, they also include parts that I believe to be from volume 4, to bridge the gap to the scene from the end of vol.1 at the end, and all these talk about the special strike package is very briefly mentioned IF at all on volume 1, don't think it is on the 3rd volume.
This director knows what he is doing, while I don't want things to end with this season, at least we were given proper context to everything that was happening with Lena.

Seeing Eugene's sister in the cemetery smiling like that, had me thinking that slowly he is moving forth, even if Shin does not realize it, slowly processing his emotions is endearing to watch, and he finally found something to aim for, waiting to show them all that view, Lena included, something other than the battlefield, the sea!
His trauma is yet to be solved, and that will only be so in volume 5, I don't believe this new goal of his, was mentioned in either vol.1 or 3 either, so these tiny pieces of the future are being inserted together here are not a wrong decision IMO.

If the last episode left people nervous since he didn't meet Lena, this one skipping back and forth on the time scale, further leaves people desperate, to see if they are going give this season a proper sendoff, if you read the source you kinda expect a proper ending but are still nervous as well.

Up till the very end, they keep Lena unaware the squad had survived, sad to see her getting her hopes up about them due to the Para-Raid tech, being downcasted like that again, but it was only for a short time at least.
The kitty she had picked at the end of Part 1 as I recall, but then due to the invasion from the Legion Lena lost him in the conflict, kinda forgotten that happened, though she always had him after Part 1, thankfully he survived and meet her again, with that flashback at the end, of 86 first finding the same cat and Anju wishing he was that same cat, so endearing.

Leave it to the director to know how to properly finish this season, amazing work, such cheap words, because I repeat them so much, but this dude keeps delivering... showing the perspective of Fido, and setting up that theme song for their anticipated reunion, Lena's reaction did not disappoint, but it was also nice to see Shin smiling more than usual, and there was this distinct glow in his eyes alright!
No comment <3.

As far as a perfect closure goes, such was given to S1, leaving out the ending of vol.1 to display here in full splendor, was the right choice, though it hurt those that read the LN, after part 1.

Overall the adaptation of vol.1-3 for both parts is full of thoughtful choices, made thinking about how books could be at their prime in the anime medium, I don't think there was any way to surpass volume 1, the writing was impactful there like nothing I have read in LNs, but regardless Part 1 did a great job.

Volumes 2 and 3 are way weaker in the LN in comparison, to this adaptation, with Part 2, vastly surpassing the source material in the right scenes, conveying everything to the full potential of what you can do with visuals and sound, leaving their reunion to end it all wraps everything in the best way possible.

9.5/10 = 10

I m not going to nitpick and be feisty about giving it a 10, it fucking deserves it, Part 1 was already special, and what this achieved with Part 2 is what the series deserved, fully realized in anime, the director, the staff behind this adaptation, all the budget given to fully realize this vision, I m very thankful that so many miracles came together to give us such a masterpiece, we only got such a result because the people involved put tons of care and love to get this out with such quality.

I would love to see an S2, see them tackling what is ahead, Shin and Lena's development is far from over, but if left here, it was done with such finesse, I can't complain, just wonder what this director could have done with what is ahead~~

Repeating the feat below again, I see ya. xD

A quick addition, forgotten to mention the OST for this series, I believe Sawano to have produced some better score, but this stands among some of his better work and the staff was able to make a really great usage from the soundtrack, whereas things like Shield Hero have such good score, poorly used in the adaptations...
Gotta gush Voices of the Chord usage again on last episode and loved all the themed songs for this last episode too, fits really well, in particular I loved the OP2, the OP for Part 2 so much!

2/10 Series.

Forced discrimination just to drive the point home that 86 is hated on
Forced loli with convenient powers for "plot" purposes
Nonsensical story writing and decisions made my characters
Inconsistency when it comes to army power, fight scenes and communication capabilities (biggest plot hole is the mech butterflies are supposed to be jamming signals yet they can communicate with other nations, fire off attacks from afar etc etc..)

I feel tricked by the MAL rating for this anime. I expected a masterpiece, but what I got was another tropey anime with a different coat of paint. The thing is the coat of paint was different than the isekai/harem we usually get each season and so this is highly rated. Peel back the great OST, the visuals and the overall production value and you get to see if for what it is. It's basically a shiny turd, but a turd nonetheless.

WOW wish I had watched this during the original airtime, didn't think there'd be a face-to-face between Lena and Shin so soon- but easily one of the best in recent years for me:

Main grievance overall is with Frederica- Not a big fan and she honestly annoyed me a bit- I felt like her sideplot with Kiri/her as Empress fell flat in relation to the main cast and overarching plot- brought some really great development for Shin though, and the scenes with him opening up and his interactions with Kiri were gold though

Plot armor was a LITTLE too thick for the last few episodes though, didn't take away from the overall experience so I'll give it a pass, excited to see where the story goes: S2 announcement when??

8/10 story for Part 2 but the production and ost make this a strong 9 for me

Did the anime intentionally drag this reunion for 2 episodes or is the LN different?

I wanted to like this anime so bad, but moments like this just make it hard. It had so much potential, now it's just 23 episodes of mediocrity.

These last 2 episodes were really spectacular. This episode in particular was even more special. It's rare to find an ending of a last episode that hits and nails everything. I had to rewatch it a couple of times because the technical side of it genuinely amazed me.

So the direction in this episode is absolutely terrific. And the music is incredibly moving and packed with emotion. But I think the storyboard artists did a hell of a job too. Because there’s a lot of symbolic imagery. And there’s such a great connection and synergy between the dialogue, music and visuals that appear on screen. The timing is just so meticulously in sync. There’s no second that feels wasted. It’s honestly impressive.

An aspect that I admire about this episode is how it’s separated into two points of view and three sections. The first part being from Shin’s perspective and the second part being from Lena’s. We get a deeper look into their contrasting character development from scenes at the graveyard, the 86 memorial site, and their meeting.

The scene at the graveyard shows how Shin has begun to change. Marcel was an important piece for this moment and it also wraps up the mini plot with Nina’s letters. Marcel and Shin show us how different characters handle the same problem. Shin accepts responsibility for Eugene’s death, but continues to fight on. Meanwhile, Marcel reveals the guilt and trauma that he’s been struggling with. I think this scene tactfully illustrates how war can break people and fracture relationships.

Lena has a similar scene at the graveyard where she reveals what’s become of the Republic, an instance of reap what you sow. Then like Shin and Marcel, she has her own moment with Annette recounting their growth. I think Lena and Shin’s scenes here are very alike. They both show how the war has affected them. How Shin and Lena have each affected one another. And how they’ve changed.

The next scenes at the 86 memorial continue to show us their development. For Shin, I liked how this part contrasts with Part 1’s last episode where he was fighting and looking for a place to die. Now, Shin’s found a reason to live and a new reason to keep fighting. This scene shows how he’s finally able to move forward. For Lena’s scene, it’s one that reinforces her reason to keep fighting. It shows her vow to continue onward.

Also during Lena’s scene … so that was actually her hand touching Kaie’s name on the memorial in the OP? And her box of doodles … Shin’s broken gun … and the red spider lilies. Oh. Now it all makes sense. I had to pause this moment to fully digest Kaie, Daiya, Kujo and Haruto’s names. 😢

I really liked how they finished this part out for both of their scenes though. Shin taking a step forward to ED1 Avid and Lena taking a step onward to OP2 Kyokaisen. And with that step, the light returns back into their life. Then, both ending their parts saluting the other. After Lena’s scene, the photo of the outdoor bench in Part 1’s ending appears. That was a nice touch.

And lastly the ending scene. It was icing on the cake. Like whoa. How could it be sad, funny and happy all at the same time? Raiden's peaceful smile. Anju's reminiscing flashback with Daiya, Kaie and Haruto. Theo and Kurena squabbling. Afterwards, Raiden barging in to save Theo. 😂 Then, Shin running along to catch up to them so he doesn’t get left behind. 😣

And finally, the meeting between them all. This moment was so, so satisfying. Shin introducing themselves to Lena, and Lena finally being able to just let it all out. Letting everything she’s been keeping inside, all of her feelings, rush right out. The dialogue. The music. The visuals. The timing. Wow. Just wow. And to top it off, Raiden, Theo, Anju and Kurena all sort of reiterate what they wrote on the picture they left her. I loved how they used a dolly shot to capture this moment too. It felt like your heart was moving along with Lena’s surprise. Like a swirl of emotions.

What I loved most though is how they tied this ending together with the first part’s ending. In Part 1, it ended with Lena all by herself, looking ahead towards the path where the train tracks led. But this time the ending shot reveals the train tracks coming to an end and what leads down the path is all of them finally standing together side by side. What a beautiful shot. What an impactful scene.

Well, this has surely become one of my favorite endings in a last episode. Kudos to the A-1 production staff. You can tell from all the fine details that they put a lot of thought, consideration and passion into it. They deserve all the appreciation and more.

I'm glad most people seemed to have enjoyed this show, however I found it good but with a lot of flaws that dragged it down to okay-ish, maybe a little subpar. Don't get me wrong, they had some very well done scenes, but they also had a lot of poor execution as well that kind of undermined or ruined it for me.

One of the most frequent flaws is the anime telling you things instead of showing you it, which would have been much more better if shown. For example we never got to see the fall of the Republic, and what Lena went through, nor how she grew as a person as a result of it. Nor did we ever see the Alba going through it, we're just told briefly and broadly in the aftermath. So much wasted potential storytelling and drama-wise, and it feels cheap. The show does this "tell not show" approach so often, like the horrors the 86 went through being becoming un-citizened, and the countless battles and lost team members. We're just told it, how you should feel about it, and not really shown it so we can see for ourselves.

This approach made everything feel really shallow and hallow. Look at the Alba being so cartoonishly lazy and cruel. In the republic aftermath some Alba in a soup line complained a kid Alba got more soup than he did. Really? Am I supposed to take that seriously, or as a joke? It was so shallow, it actually seems like a joke. But this happened since the very first episode and throughout to the end.

They did this with the characters as well, how much can you actually say about Anju other than she's a 86 and thus mistreated, she lost Diaya, and can cook? How about Theo then, besides being able to draw, and acts somewhat like a immature teenager? Kurena? Raiden? Other than Shin, Lena, and a few other characters, most characters are actually pretty shallowly developed thus kind of feels hallow. I mean maybe they have just barely enough to get by, but they aren't overflowing with character. It's not that difficult nor time consuming to give characters development either, look how fast they did it with Diaya falling for Anju, but the problem with Diaya is they only did that just to kill him off the same episode. Whereas others like Anju, Theo, Kurena, and Raiden, they had forever to develop those characters since they made it to the end, but they did very little with them.

I don't know, it seems to be enough for everybody else to be calling this show a masterpiece. Again, I think there were a lot of good parts, but I also think there was a lot of shallow and hallow feeling things. I would have loved to see the fall of the Republic, a more nuanced depiction of the Alba, Lena's journey from the republic's fall to when she caught up to the 86, and what exactly the 86 characters gone through in the past instead of just being told about it. "The Alba killed my parents! Imagine it for yourself, and feel for me!"

I also didn't like how the 86 always seemed to be right, and never really made mistakes that they then have to struggle and overcome. This robbed them of character development. Like say when they got to the Federacy, it was their fault they couldn't fit in. Instead of the Federacy being bad for pitying them, the 86 had a meltdown and tried to blame them for all their problems, only to realize they can't play the "Alba bad" card anymore. Or perhaps in officer's school the 86 despite being good in combat, totally sucked at larger teamwork, Federacy tactics, and chain of command. It's because of that, they can't get along with the Federacy troops. But nope, the 86 are always right, thus no consequences for them like when Shin points a gun at the command team because the Legion are coming. The 86 are perfect, it's everybody else who's the problem.

It's sort of like with the reunion with Lena. It was great, I was more than happy to see it. But Shin not opening his cockpit and revealing it to her on the spot, then all the deception of the 86 knowing but Lena not knowing, and Lena being tricked into thinking the 86 were all dead at the memorial site. It was really a wretched thing they put Lena though, great to watch as a show though, but really shitty thing for Shin and the 86 to do. But of course the 86 are always right, so it all works out. It actually robbed us of more time seeing them together though. We also never even got to see Henrietta meet Shin, remember they were neighbors as kids and they parted on bad terms.

Nice way to conclude the story. From the world's perspective, it was rather a bitter ending. The war didn't end, humanity was still in trouble... but from the main characters' point of view, it was actually something that's worth of calling as a happy ending. They truly deserved such happiness. Their reunion was really cute. I'm glad that we could see so many characters receiving some time to shine, even if a little.

Great last episode for this cour. Vladilena finally meeting face-to-face with her former Spearhead squad without any asterisks was very welcomed. If only Vladilena was more present leading up to this, so that the viewer could get a better read on how she was feeling throughout, or the broader fallout of the Republic being destroyed.

It was long journey and few boring episodes in season 2, but for the ending and story I'll give 10 also! I think season first was a little better, I hope there actually will be third season so they explain how that robot army of ghosts started.

That almost holding hands at the end was a shock for me but even better! ;p I rly would love to see more of this story.

"It's been a long time, Handler One."
The emotional release from that line hit like an absolute nuke. Lena's gradual realization of what it meant and Shin finally having a purpose to his life was pretty much a second nuke.

Won't be forgetting this one any time soon, and that's beyond it being a mecha title with spider suits instead of giant robots.
