I usually like the main squad's casual hanging out, but the kissing stuff was pretty annoying.
I'm glad the whole troll thing actually went somewhere. Nice that they built up to it.

"If people had died, it'd be a different story". So you are telling me after all that in the last episode no one died??? That is a bit cliché but it's still fine.
I'm enjoying this anime so far.

They never let Katie go see the troll alone before, so why did they stupidly do it this time?

And another evil student, but this one I saw coming.

Nobody Died! Not the guy who's literally missing a chunk of his torso with a death stare, the girl who's disembowel by those huge talons with such force it sent her flying back into the wall, nor the guy who's torso, pelvis, and no doubt his spine was crushed until there was a satisfying bone crunch. Again nobody died, despite the only time we saw healing magic used was with Oliver. No rush to use healing magic on such grievous wounds, except for Oliver's scratch.

Katie and Pete to that girl who casted the running spell as a prank, "If you have something to say you should use your words" and "how could you sneak attack her from behind? only a coward would do something like that". Oh you mean like how Oliver literally fireballed the guy mocking Katie from behind when his back was turned? You mean using words like the incantation for the fireball spell?

Yeah, I'm done. Some of it is personal (mixing modern Japanese with retro samurai speech and "Mr./Ms.", literally, while teachers are called sensei for some incongruent reason, is fucking annoying); most of it is how butchered the development is for the sake of moving the plot along. Characters are worse than cardboards; they talk, do things, but there's absolutely nothing endearing about them. Which may be fine if the MC is dazzling (I mean, isn't that why we can stomach OP MCs with shallow characterization?), but no, Oliver is intentionally bland even when he's OP.
Scenes happen in quick succession, sometimes without any leadup. They say goodbye to Katie after school, Katie goes to see the troll, then the next scene Oliver is practicing sword magic with Nanao. Would it have hurt them to put in a shot with Oliver mentioning that he's going to train with Nanao? Animation is solid, but lacks the little details that makes the story flow.

Edit:
Decided to keep watching for the plot reveal in ep 6 based on other comments. Pacing gets slightly better in the aborted tournament arc, but otherwise the same old shit. Plot goes absolutely nowhere; aside from ep 6 the main plot is never touched again.

"If people had died, it would be a different story" is a hell of a comment to make after what happened to the nameless background character students during the Garuda's rampage. Several students seemed to have been killed during that incident, unless they somehow survived those grievous wounds.

Shannon's (Oliver's cousin) appearance was extremely abrupt too. She had exactly 35 seconds of screentime, wherein she materialised into the area making nary a sound, kissed him on the cheek, and then promptly left again. Was this scene heavily truncated from the light novel?

Glad to finally see some explanations for the troll, at least. Apparently, it's both sapient and capable of speech, so to what extent was it provoked into running amok?

I guess it was pretty obvious that Vera was a villain, the first time she appeared it didn’t seem that way but it was all too clear she was behind the Garuda in the previous episode, and now we know it was her that messed with the troll. But even if her being a villain isn’t a big surprise, her character just got a new layer of intrigue, so she’s a monster rights activist that is engaging in inhumane experiments on said monsters to allow them to be more intelligent, but what she does is looked down on by other activists, very interesting. And that’s not even counting the tease at her past with the weird Medusa eye she has, so I’m guessing the reason she’s so content with her actions is because of how her own parents treated her, sad but this battle is about to be sick, no time to be sad lol.

On a lighter note, the kiss bit was really cute earlier in the episode, wasn’t expecting much romance in this show but it looks like Nanao and Katie are gonna be players for Oliver’s love interest, or at least I think Katie will eventually be roped in with those reactions lol, for now tho Nanao is being extra apparent about it, it’s just unfortunate her kiss was cut off by Oliver’s cousin randomly showing up, cool to see her but I would have liked a bit more of her before she dipped. I also liked the alchemy class bit a lot, I wish there was time for more of the class stuff but I get why it’s not in the forefront, I’ll take what I can get of it, I guess even Pete can screw up catastrophically lol. Oh and apparently no one died during the Garuda incident, that’s pretty insane considering how bad some of those hits looked, but good on them I guess.

And I guess the next episode is the end of Volume 1, 6 episodes isn’t bad for a whole volume, and much better than what a lot of LN adaptations can ask for, but it’s unfortunately not as lucky as Ishura and it getting a whole season for its first book.

"I guess it was pretty obvious that Vera was a villain" was it really? I guess someone excepted it more than me lol. She wasn't really a villain though, but it does seem like it by the end of the episode, I guess. But really, that's how mages are. She didn't want to harm Katie, as a magical biologist it makes sense for her to analyze someone's brain to understand them better. And she specifically said she won't harm her, she also had no ill feelings towards Oliver or Nanao and didn't want to harm them. And went easy on them in a fight next episode, basically just protecting herself.
" so she’s a monster rights activist" demi-human activist. Like elfs, centaurs, dwarves aren't monsters. Trolls aren't considered monsters too.
She is a bit different from other activists, as she actually puts her hands inside of those whose rights she wants to alleviate, you can see why it'd be looked down upon.
They cut it from the anime, Oliver thought about it. It was because of how she was raised. Her parents gave her the eye, while knowing that there is 90% she is gonna die and Miligan considered it as love. Thus, she showed her love for demi-humans the same way. Believing the results of her research would ultimately save them, even if many of them are gonna die.
The other part they didn' mention is that there is an exteremely small chance for basilisk eye to accept you, and you only can do that to a child, where the chance of rejection is at its lowest. There is another case of it later on, where a grown body would reject a foreign entity getting into it, immune system trying to fight it.
Also mentioned that magical eyes implanted into someone isn't uncommon. (so maybe a hint that there would be more?)

Classes are always the most fun, yeah.

@Hirugiku Lol yeah for some reason I was so convinced that she could be a villain, and yeah it is revealed that she isn’t really a “villain” but she played that role in this part of the story, even if in her mind working on Katie isn’t wrong, ain’t no way Nanao and Oliver could allow it. And yeah I guess “monster rights” isn’t the right way to put it, I think I forgot other human-like races fall under the wing of the activists.

And thanks for the detailed rundown on why Vera turned out the way she did, it really does make her all the more interesting as a character. And that stuff about the eye is also really cool, but at the same time it goes to show how little Vera’s parents cared about her life, they were willing to go through with it despite the odds.
