What do you think, where is the line between a fan and a fanatic of something? As applied to fans of anime and related media and pop culture in general. And does the same logic work with haters and regular people who don't like something? Can you classify yourself as a passionate "fanatic" of this or that part of the anime or the industry in general, or are you one of those people who consider themselves "reasonable fans" and do not like overly excited people?

Fan is short for fanatic, so they mean the same thing. It just comes down to how much you want to express your love for something. There are some anime where even though I have a positive outlook on, my care for them has faded away over time, and others where I enjoyed them so much that I will continue to show my support for them.
I am using the best palette swap.

If you start sending death threats then you've gone way over the threshold of fan

I've seen a lot of kids on twitter not understand why doing this is bad because it's supposedly "might be justifiably". So it's kind of the norm now.

Those who go to extreme extent to "defend" the anime are beyond fans (in a negative light). Harassing other fandoms, making sure the anime stays at the forefront of top lists everywhere through rating manipulation/bots/review-bombing etc.

Talking about Twitter specifically, i've seen some users that seem like their entire life/identity revolves mostly around the anime/fandom.

To avoid action is fear pretending to be wisdom.

When you get to the point where you start harassing other fans or begin to idolize an anime and make it a personality trait, you’ve passed the event horizon.
The other posts above also mention good points.

Sounds like a normal day in the anime community on Twitter.

I would say the difference between a fan and fanatic is that a fan's level of enthusiasm for interests of theirs is moderate whereas a fanatic's enthusiasm is extreme to an unhealthy level.

A difference is simple and visible through my profile: I am an anime fan while being a Bleach fanatic [although fan comes from fanatic but in nowadays it seems to change slightly a meaning].

In the other hand there are also trashes not fans/fanatics who threathens to staff and other people involved into anime industry for doing something not how they wanted, they are not worth to be called anything than just a trash, although I think I might have insulted real trashes which people throws out everyday.

I love anime and manga more than anything else in this life, but I would never say that someone has to die or get screwed in life because they don't like the same anime as me, like some crazy people do, besides being ridiculous, it's sick. 😷

You know that fan is just short for fanatic right? Your question doesn't make any sense.

Well, fanatic we usually see as someone on an obsessive level. Its definition is supposed to be:

a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal, especially for an extreme religious or political cause.

"religious fanatics"

But I guess you can be excessive about just about anything. A fan is just a slang off of fanatic, I guess to make it sound like excessive? But you really enjoy/love a certain thing. Often and almost to the point of obsession.

I think most of us who are passionate about anime will do whatever they can to watch or get their favourite merchandise of anime or really involve themselves within the community somehow.

If you let anime consume most of your life, then you're to the point of obsession, or at least somewhere close to it. But some may be in denial as well.

fan
noun
noun: fan; plural noun: fans
a person who has a strong interest in or admiration for a particular person or thing.
"football fans"

fa·nat·ic
noun
noun: fanatic; plural noun: fanatics
a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal, especially for an extreme religious or political cause.
"religious fanatics"

INFORMAL
a person with an obsessive interest in and enthusiasm for something, especially an activity.
"a fitness fanatic"

Above are googled definitions.

I guess one becomes a fanatic when their interest becomes unhealthy and obsessive. Like it gets in the way of other aspects of their life, and they are emotionally attached to it beyond what is appropriate. Kind of like when someone becomes obsessed with a romantic partner or person and stalks them and stuff, except in this case its anime, waifu/husbando culture, or some other media. And I'll probably get some hate for saying this, but anime addiction, or any kind of media addiction, is a problem, especially if it gets in the way of real life relationships and activities. It's kinda memed on, but real people have had their lives consumed by stuff like this, and have become shut ins and the like. Obviously there are probably other underlying issues that cause someone to become a shut in, but you get the point. I guess just make sure to not let your hobbies or interests consume you, and try and live healthily. I watch a lot of anime, but I still make time to hang out with irl friends and pursue my other interests.

Of course, I'm taking the literal definition of fanatic quite seriously, and I'm sure some people interpret the word differently depending on how its used (hence the discussion). I'm sure some people use the word fanatic as a more exaggerated fan, which is probably correct too in that context.

Also, I don't think that being toxic or review bombing/botting scores necessarily means that they are a fanatic. They could be, but they could also just be an asshole. People online are very quick to throw insults and try to grab the high ground, and I wouldn't be surprised if a decent portion of "toxic fanatics" are just internet trolls trying to get attention and stir drama. It's sad, but its the way it is. It also makes it harder to distinguish between actual fanatics, trolls, and just regular fans, since everything just gets mushed together in the big picture.

One thing I've never really understood is when people feel the need to dig into the people and companies involved in making something. Personally, if I like something, I just don't feel an interest in checking out the staff, the studios, etc. I just try to find more content of the same series (like light novels etc). I even understand collecting art or figures or merch etc, but obsessing about the people behind them seems weird to me.

A fan is a light version of a fanatic. Watered down. Low-key. A fan is passionate about something, but with moderation.

To people stating the obvious (that "fan" is short for "fanatic"): in language, origin and current meaning are different things. Once someone had the idea of shortening "fanatic" to "fan", the two words started living different lives and acquired specialized meanings, so that asking what is the difference between them is a perfectly valid and sensible question. Just like "emo" is originally short for "emotional", but "emo" refers only to a certain style and subculture, while "emotional" is the general adjective meaning "characterized by intense feeling": they aren't interchangeable.

Well, I don't know how it is in English, but in Russian and Ukrainian fan and fanatic are very different words. At least if you're not talking about sports fans. Fan is any passionate fan of something, while fanatic is a word with a clear negative connotation and usually means a religious or political extremist.

Fan is short for fanatic but the term started to mean something more mild someone just liking something rather than being strictly fanatical necessarily.
