Damn this really needs a second season with how this ended. Robin was an absolute scumbag. Maybe at some point in the past Kiroko had some kind of consensual relationship with Robin. The single flashback doesn't rly show anything except that Robin snuck into their room to fuck - which is weird, but doesn't mean it Kiriko wasn't seeing Robin at some point before that. But regardless now in the present dude had some random girl locked up and connected to a monster in some way. She was definitely raped and experimented on so yeah.

Such a beautiful ending to a beautiful season. It makes me slightly upset that Kiruko let Robin live, but it was satisfying to watch him get the shit beat out of him. And this episode was the first time that I started to really, genuinely care about the kids in the facility. And knowing that they all turn into Hiruko at the end just adds a level of heartbreak to the newly sweet and genuine feeling from these kids. Such a perfect ending to a perfect show. Truly a rollercoaster of emotions in this finale, from anger to curiousity to a bit of wholesomeness and intense emotion with Shiro and Maru's confessions, to happy that Kiruko and Maru seem to be somewhat back to normal and that there will eventually be a season 2.

easily one of the best shows of 2023

but jfc, last episode is still messing with my head. that was f'ed up. f'ed up, illegal. all of the above

not sure who attacked the facilitity with the children. but the director lady is a psychopath. she only used it to make herself immortal? some kids escaped to the realworld..where there is a moderncity and everything (prior to this post-apocalyptic world)

8/10. this was a really good show

little if any of the problems and the mysteries were resolved which is just very disappointing
Manga reader here. I think a LOT of mysteries were explained and resolved in this season, even for anime-onlys.
The issue is, it's mostly non-verbal (show, don't tell). And it requires multiple rewatches (I'm still catching new details after third rewatch)
I've seen a lot of anime reaction channels on YT, people are confused and barely figured the different timelines...
I assume that's because 99% of animes nowadays have to explain everything to the audience through dialogue/monologue exposition...

I'm a huge fan, 9/10 season for me, but don't get me wrong, I also think the finale was anti-climatic as hell and not the best way to sell the manga. Rare L from the anime adaptation team.

I'm curious. Please, would you let me know what are the mysteries that you felt unresolved/incomplete?
I'd be glad to explain, only if it's explained in the anime, without spoiling the manga of course.
Thanks, I'll come back to you later (probably on profile messages), I actually want to like this title since it's got many of my favourite elements involved 🙂

I'm so confused why they thought having Maru confess to Kiruko immediately after she was raped for 2 days straight on top of psychological abuse (having to watch in the mirror) was a good idea. "Read the room" is an understatement. And also why they just made her go 'welp can't be sad forever' and that's all there's to it? You mean to tell me Kiriko's body remembered what she did with Robin years ago, but fresh SA leaves no traumatic responses? Ok. I was feeling this anime but the way they handled that definitely drags my rating down a point.

The worst season finale I've seen in a while, the tone goes against the whole of the series and the episode as a whole add NOTHING to the story. The episode made me feel betrayed by the author. Would not even bother with the manga.

The only interesting thing is that the prosthetics Doctor was one of the escaped children in the past.

Honestly, I'd just stop this anime at episode 11 and pretend it was cancelled. It had such a cool episodic sci Fi feel but they just threw it overboard in the last two episodes.

I had hope for a great, solid season of a good sci Fi anime bordering generic but with a great twist. Reminded me of the BLAME! Manga but done in a more digestible way.

Don't bother, read BLAME! instead. Even in it's non sense of visual story telling with subjective time it's miles ahead of this.

Also it's very hard to believe the Main was raped, the other main confessed minutes later and now it's like going back to episode 11's ending just stating Robin is found. The fact that the whole Robin thing did not even affect anything in the end takes away points in my review.

7/10 ... If you keep it only until EP 11 then it's 9/10

I get the fact of why the scene happened, But you cant not say that is not shitting writing in the slightest! she felt no remorse or sorrow. It would have captivated the audience and made the show more popular if robin had gotten slaughtered. This is in a sense NTR, Gross.

The important thing is not that Maru is confessing again but what he says next: that he would not have loved Haruki or Kiriko but he does love her, as a completely new person with a new identity. And that's actually what she needs to hear at that moment. It's particularly interesting to see that the mment she stops him by throwing the stone in the river is not when he's confessing again, not when he's saying she's a new person but when Maru says that he will protect her, since this would remove any sense of pride she has, what she thinks her usefulness is. And that means she accepts the rest, so she slowly move away from thinking she's Haruki. And that's why the picture we see in the water at the end is not Robin's, but Haruki's. It's him she leaves behind.

I didn't like the final episode, too weak in Inazaki's story, although assuming it's still a road series, it was the right ending/continuation.

5/10 for good animation.

That whole scene seems to have been made for shock value or because the author had no idea what they were going to do with it.
Skimmed the manga and the pair just goes back to adventuring like they were doing before as if it never occurred, Robby never gets mentioned or seen again.

Too big of a cognitive dissonance to start backpedalling after that.
Too much wasted potential and character development, was a fork in the road and would've been far more interesting to have the show take a darker turn with Maru finishing it - instead it gets memory holed and things remain practically the same.

It only goes DOWNHILL from here, my god what a waste...

Now what happened to him/her was certainly bad but I couldn't stop laughing when Robin kept trying to escape only to get put back in place by Maru and then smashed by him. The kids in the other timeline have reached civilization and this is, I presume, when the Great Disaster(I forgor the name) happens.

Here's hoping for a S2 coz I want more of this.

I'd think it's better than average. The atmosphere is done well, and that's pulling people to keep watching. However, nothing is settled or what happened in the little heaven is only thing actually matters in the story. These characters are there simply to be eyes to the world not actually be developed.

I think you would change your mind if you gave it more thought but I can't blame you not to want to.
As for the point of the rape, I bet we'll understand why it happened later in the story. It is quite obvious that Robin does not simply do it for sexual satisfaction. As he says, it's an experiment. And he seems to be the guy to do very weird experiments indeed, the girl linked to a maneater proves it enough.

Usually i don't prefer a fuckin cliffhanger. But this one got a pretty big exception because yeah its deserve.

Not much things got solve; Its 'just' Kiruko moving on from Robin, and accept her identity. Robin disappeared for whatever reason leaving those mess behind. First batch of children whose first get out of the facility manage to reach the nearby city, looks not good but hold some good adventure ahead. Tokio blood manipulation actually her hiruko ability? Then what's up with the shine, its not from her child or her my guess xd. And then, the very good part is, they really need some more confirmation for Dr. Asumi and the poor girl from 'Their Choices' episode mystery; its factually them, no more question out from me again. The fact that the basement Hiruko factually the black-glasses little girl also makes me quite shock too, even if its so frickin late. Holy shit, Mimihime really took the girl with her till her last breath xd.

But yeah, i usually don't like this kind of double timeline. Its messed up my head so much. However, i still get how Heavenly Illusion surely illusioned me to not disliking it that much, by how they wrap up the answer slowly and steady. I appreciate that, btw.

All in all, this is not the peak yet, but i like how structure of the story from 1st to 13th hook me in, and the world-building direction so far, its fascinating. Idk how the source looksalike, but i can reassure to spare a little time to take a look....

I definitely want to read the manga now, I had a quick look at the chapter titles to guess where to start and it seems this season almost adapted everything?
Until about chapter 37.
I would advise to read from chapter 1 though. The anime cut some interesting parts (it's understandable, that's what adaptation is about) and many small details can be spotted again when revisiting the story.
It's not that long either, so it's worth it.
oh you are right I only checked the chapter titles and thought it was a more recent one.
I guess I might do so after a while, I generally dislike rereading stories which I have already seen in anime form. Its like overwriting the positive experience and since I know what to expect its not even a great experience.

I kinda wish we got to know Robin's motives because now he just seems to be a villain for no reason and it didn't serve anything other than shock value.

Regarding Tokio and the kids, why did the teachers separate the Twins? Were they going to give one to Tokio and Kona? Also, are the kids the one who started the destruction of Japan? I kinda wish we had questions to this but I know everything can't be told in 13 episodes. Overall, it's a decent episode but definitely not the best.

Dr. Sawatari knew of the Director's plan, to use Tokio's child to live on. He realized this and gave the clone to Tokio, so the Director could take the clone and the real one would later go to Tokio. Tokio doesn't understand this of course, and retaliates with the doctor too late to explain to her. What happens next, falls under manga territory.

And then the allies of the community when confronted by the fact that the acceptance of lgbt's is falling all around the board & the world they all make the face stupid pikachu face.

With shows like this one I ain't surprised to see those numbers going down.

- Events in the Tengoku Complex was in the past, before the end of the world, what explains why Maru/Kiruko can find a lot of products only 7 or 10 years older than the expiry date.

- MARU = TOKIO/KONA'S BABY, the real one because he has special abilities.

- DOCTOR = SAWATARI, the glasses guy.

- USAMI = SHIRO, the nerdy boi who loves Mimihime.

- MIMIHIME = Stayed together to Usami until her end.

- ANZU = the woman who died after give Maru the Super-laser and gave his mission.

- TAKA = ?? Robin??

- OONA (sunglasses girl) = the monster who was in Usami's underground parking

I can't complain, this crazy plot was well written so far. But there's a risk that the next explanations turn it all a mess.

It's not easy fir any author to asspull an agreable explanation when the bar of the misteries is set too high. Let's see, and let's go to the manga, as usual lol

Just gonna say Anzu and Taka is really off.

While there are still questions left open (for which I hope a s2 will come), still great series from its animation to its Shinsekai yori-like story where I quite liked seeing the two timelines of the facility and Kiruko and Maru and figuring out how the two are connected (like for example Shiro being Usami and Mimihime the patient hooked up to the machines).

To those who think the "rape scene" had no point or that this episode had some kind of "cognitive dissonance" with Maru's confession and Kiruko ripping up the picture before they resume the status quo, consider this: not everyone deals with trauma the same way. Maru's confession where he says he didn't know either sibling and might not have felt the same way about either as he does Kiruko indicates that he doesn't see this person as either. It's someone new, someone who is both and neither. This strikes a chord with Kiruko who had been struggling with their identity up to this point. Heck, if you wanted to take it further into LGBTQ+ territory, "Kiriko" and "Haruki" are dead names for Kiruko. Up to this name, "Kiruko" was a way for them to hold onto their old identities because this new person had no clue as to who they were. When Maru confesses again, it's a sign to Kiruko to become their own person.

Haruki and Kiriko are dead. Kiruko is the person that was born that day in the doctor's hospital. Maru's confession reminds Kiruko of that reality and so they tear up the picture and move on with life, ready to start over. The final scene where the frame holds on Haruki's face is telling us that the final piece of Kiruko's old identity has been discarded.

As for how Kiruko handled their trauma...

Believe it or not, some people handle trauma by resolving to distance themselves from all the things that remind them of it. Giving up an identity, tearing up pictures, having a long talk, etc could all be helpful in living with trauma. Kiruko is choosing to do two things. The first is discarding their identity and ties to their past as a way of giving up on the Robin they knew. The second is moving on, knowing that yeah, something terrible happened; but also, there are bigger things to focus on. Maybe one day they'll re-evaluate the entire situation through new eyes and come to terms with it. Maybe not. Kiruko is making a choice to not let it destroy them, though, and that's the important part.

Maru's resolve to kill Robin should also be noted. Maru broke down only a few episodes ago when he realized a) the monsters are former Human's, and b) when he had to take a live to prevent someone from becoming a monster. He doesn't view life as callously as Robin and has a strong moral code about not taking a life. Here, his moral code is broken because someone has committed an unforgivable act in his eyes. Maru no longer views Robin as Human, but as yet another monster to be executed ruthlessly. Heck, he might even have some sympathy for the monsters because they were people once, too. But for Robin, it's nothing but hatred and a burning fury.

Honestly, I wish this had another 11 episodes for the season. I want to see what happens next and where things are going. Hopefully, season 2 is on the way.

Hopefully there will be another season in future, as I really wonder how Maru ended up alone and then met with that woman who told him about Hiruko - she obviously was from the facility too - and who she was.

Last 2 episodes have been quite controversial. I'm not a big fan of that forced rape scene in E12. It did nothing plot wise and could be replaced with something less disgusting and much more intriguing. The way they did Robin is disappointing. For some reason he became just a one dimensional villain guy obsessed with sex. Even if you are a psychopath, even if you haven't been laid last couple years. Can you imagine meeting an old friend/buddy and first thing you do is tie him and rape him. Also he is basically raping a 10yo boy and somehow it's okay to show because he is in a body of his sister?

Masakazu Ishiguro's interest in kids is a little concerning. Other than that I enjoyed this season. I would love to see more of Maru's and Kiriko's adventures without kids kissing or being raped.
