Kubo was doing great though.

But! This episode finally gave a huge explanation for his Blank Expression and showed us how his original expression would have been on it's final few seconds. He was actually trying hard to suppress his expressions and feelings all this time. And they showed us how much he likes Kubo. All with a single Blush in the end of the episode.

This really nullified my biggest problem against this anime. So I think they did a great job!

(Also, Note that Kubo was doing really nice throughout the series, I feel like I didn't need to mention that. Even in this episode her Guard Down Childish side was great! So, no, I am not ignoring her and only looking at the MC
As someone who has read the entire manga, I can safely say that you will get more of that moving forward. This episode in particular was an adaptation of Chapters 40-43 of the manga, and here on, there is a noticeable evolution of the characters' relationship, as Kubo changes someone who leans hard on her teasing persona, to a much more mellow but mature personality.  This happens as she comes to the realization that she doesn't need to constantly tease Shiraishi to maintain a strong bond with him (something that gets cemented by Chapter 65 of the manga).

On the other hand, we see that Shiraishi has become a bit more confident around Kubo, no longer as skittish or as insecure as he once was, a trait that will play into future stories, where Shiraishi helps Kubo overcome some of her deep-seated insecurities.

Futhermore, the tone of the manga shifts from the episodic nature prevalent in the first phase in the story, to a much more serialized, story-driven second phase with plenty of satisfying set ups and pay offs.

@Treyv0n And here is! My favorite episode of the entire anime, and for very good reasons. The coffee scene stands out so much for Kubo's more naive side and the very expressive animation in the two occasions she drank the dark coffee. Also, did you catch they pretty much indirectly kissed each other in that scene, and neither of the two of them made a big deal about it. Beyond that, the visuals in this episode were especially very neat.

@Shark5Sharky bro this has to have been the best episode of the entire season the whole date the coffee part the movie the way shiraishi actually smiled a little bit the art quality Nagisa’s eagerness to try the coffee and how cute she looked was all just amazing man you weren’t capping at all saying this was the best episode :)
