I'm in love with the OP and ED.

A chill adult MC who happens to be an otaku? I'm sold. If that's not enough, there's a Gothic Lolita to look forward to.

Pretty good 1st episode and great OP/ED. I really liked the overall flow of the episode. The way the show handled most of weaponry shown was pretty spot-on, in my opinion. Even if the gore was “tone down” (I thought it was fine, to be honest), the overall initial threat still felt pretty impactful.

Also..... Itami is an awesome main character, period.
The fact that he isn’t 14-17 years is nice already.

”...My job is there only to support my hobby...” by Itami (QFT)

Anyhow, I enjoyed it and I’m really looking forward next week’s episode.

The violence wasn't censored? There was barely any violence on screen at all. The most violence you see is Itami with blood on his face after an implied violent act. The whole opening battle/rampage felt a little weak as a result.

Could've been worse though.

We could've had Terraformers all over again.

Been looking forward to this, was a bit surprised by the way they changed it.

Looks to be mostly adapted from the LN instead of the manga, judging from the particular scene details & girl trio looks, since there's a noticeable difference for them from LN to manga,

Probably the anime I looked forward to the most from this season.

It should be noted that this anime will be nothing like Outbreak Company, since people have been comparing the similar setting. There will be no school shenanigans, it will focus more on the military aspect and the japanese also share a different relationship with the otherworldly people than in Outbreak Company.
The obvious plus is that it's one of the non-highschool kids anime this season which is already something to look forward to.

On a negative note the animation didn't really take me off my feet. Like many others have said it would've been better if A1 stuck more to the manga.
It also adapts the LN, not the manga which is a bit different, so since I haven't read the novel I am still feeling some bad foreshadowing that this might turn out to be not as good as the manga.

The Episode's pacing felt a bit too quick, even the battle between the fantasy monsters and the army. Still, Youji is a pretty interesting main character already, being a 33 year old otaku prioritising his hobby over his job. Good man! =D

The OP & ED themes are pretty good, along with the animation being consistent during the majority of the episode.

Overall, a good episode and I hope it doesn't start going downhill from here on out.

I actually thought it was a pretty fast-paced 1st episode, almost rushed... But it was engaging. (welp, apparently only covered 3/4 of Chapter 1)
The cliffhanger ending, though annoying, was definitely effective.

Looking forward to future episodes ^^

Not bad, like the MC. Thought the pace was fluid, the only thing off was that the panic from the invasion spread a bit to slow at times (one of several instances: when he first noticed the dragon when he was on the elevator, people behind him didn't, even though they would have had more opportunity, same with people leaving).

But that is a small thing. Overall strong start, it got us to the reverse invasion, and into the fantasy world. Want to see what happens next, and that is always a good start.

And where exactly would they incarcerate the captured soldier while they are in the middle of a battlefield? You make it sound like they were in a safety zone at that time controlled by their own side, but they were clearly not.

Right. Killing that soldier was appropriate in a combat situation. He was attacking; he hadn't even tried to surrender.

Later after the military has broken the attacking formations, we see the police firing. It's made clear in the manga that they're firing tear gas, and then the police riot squads move in to take prisoners. That should have been shown in the anime.

That would have been a good scene - the attacking army starts to retreat through the Gate, and some of them make it. Then more armored personnel carriers with machine guns arrive to block them off. Slowly, the attacking troops are boxed in. Riot control trucks with water cannons knock down attacking units without killing them. The attacking soldiers get the message and drop their weapons. The attacking army ends up sitting on the ground, disarmed, surrounded by cops and troops pointing weapons at them. More cops move in (Tokyo has over 100,000 cops) and the prisoners are put in vehicles under guard and taken away.

This would have emphasized how totally outclassed the Empire's army is. That's a key plot point.

I'd wait until a few episodes in. Maybe they pushed back some aspect of the initial invasion for later. Maybe we also get Blu-Ray additions later on.

How the empire was outclassed should become more than obvious in the next episode anyway... at least I hope so.

Hahaha, that dumb dragon got REKT!

I hope this is a proper story about glorifying our (human) military. It's so frustrating to always see it treated like shit, being stomped by every stupid monster or alien; it's like our scientists and engineers keep coming up with new masterpieces and the authors of fiction keep spitting at their faces.

I want to see subhumans (orcs and pigmen) and middle age armies getting rolled over, and magicians' spells bouncing off a tank's armor before being ripped to shreds by machine gun fire. The only problems they should have should be logistics, like getting fuel or ammunition through the gate and across enemy territory.

I can see this having plenty of potential with the angle it's taking. Though judging by the comments I actually do hope they tone down on the more crude stuff. I'm more interested in how it handles the politics and international relations. The synopsis makes me think that.

I like the MC already though. A non-otaku-like otaku.

It was shown, though I confess it was very very brief: after the MC says "the enemy's formation is broken", they show Japanese police behind riot shields shooting tear gas canisters, implying they had switched from destroying to pacifying (police instead of military, gas instead of guns).

Agree that it could have been extended, but they had to get to the cliffhanger, so I at least give them credit for trying. I am sure they will touch on your other points the next episode or two.

I checked the manga and I don't really understand the complaints. Everything happens so quickly there that it feels like an abridged version; a direct adaptation from there would be a mess.

There's also gore in the manga but I don't think it's important at all, since the focus seems to be more on international politics, diplomacy and military strategy. Any time there's a battle in any story it's obvious that there will be mangled bodies and blood, even if the camera doesn't linger on them. It was clear enough that many people died in the attack.

I for one am glad it has toned the manga gore down, its nothing I miss.

On another subject, I am amazed at how many posts I see all over the boards with people upset that the anime version of any given title has differed from the source material. This happens in virtually every anime, so why are people constantly so surprised? You can compare the differences, comment on them, and critique them sure, but be surprised? Being surprised that there are differences in an anime adaptation is like being surprised when the sun rises in the east every morning. :)

Most of the complain aren't even about differences to the source material but just about the differences to another adaption, as the original is a regular novel, then there was a light novel adaption, a manga adaption and now an anime adaption. Many seem to think that the manga is the "original" for some reason...

Reluctant to start this. The manga did start out feeling more on the mature side but as the series progressed, is started to feel like a middle age man's teenage harem. Its not nearly as bad as your typical harem but the vibe is definitely there. Why the hell is the main cast filled with so many god damn young female characters given the circumstances?

And it's quite satisfying.

I'm afraid that tuning down all the mature content into some PG-13 would hurt the adaptation really bad.

Now it feels like some bland shounen rather than a mature seinen.

As for the main character, he just feels "alien" to me. People are getting killed left and right and the only thing he thinks of is his damn otaku addiction. Not exactly a realistic response. His mood switches like a 180 degrees, is this guy a psycho? How did this guy got into the JSDF anyway?

Yeah, the anime is getting that wrong. In the manga, when he first sees Ginza under attack he says (thinks) "The summer comiket will be disrupted". But then he starts dealing with the attack and doesn't bring that up again. The anime hammers on the "otaku" theme, including unnecessary voice-overs and intros, perhaps because of front-office interference. ("We need to make this appeal to fanboys, not ex-military! Push the ascended fanboy theme!")

Itami is a good soldier - does the right thing in combat, slacks off out of it. There's a long history of that in the military.

He IS supposed to be eccentric. There is no proof that in the manga Itami reacted differently... simply due to the fact that his reaction... was "timeskipped" over so the audience never got to see it in the first place.

That he is a good soldier becomes appearant if you put off the "compared the manga..."-glasses and look at the anime itself. You see him being goofy at first doing "stupid" mistakes like going into a pillar. But right after he says "the event will be canceled!" He goes into "serious mode". No more stupid faces, no more talk about Otaku stuff, at least until he did his part in the conflict. He goes and while unarmed kills an invading soldier, then he convinces two security guards of the imperial palace to contact the inside... his idea to save the civilians gets approved by the Japanese Emperor himself (something that many people failed to notice) and got respected enough for the local forces to inform him of the current battle progress. He only mentions the Otaku event again after the military arrived and his purpose in the conflict was fulfilled. His "otaku-ness" shows the contrast to his serious personality he has on the battlefield. The "otaku pandering" complaint only works if it contributes nothing else to the story or characters, but in this case it's does, so you can't call it pandering.

Most problems come from the subs probably, like the translators mistaking 1st lieutenant with 2nd lieutenant.
