This normally isn't my type of show, but I couldn't stop watching this. Kotaro is like a little alien from another planet. I mean, he's basically just another anime kid written like an adult, but there's something compelling about his character. I think the series falls off in the second half though, like that plotline about not wanting to touch a child without gloves. I thought that was pretty strange, and so I googled it, and the only thing I found was a reference back to the episode. The creators were literally coming up with brand new ways to neglect and abuse children just to fill time.

Also, Kotaro's other neighbors basically fall out of the show at around episode 8 or so. I like Karino and Kotaro's dynamic, but the show really lost something when Mizuki, Tamaru, and Takei slipped into the background. And what was the point of replacing Mizuki with Takei? Apartment 103 was basically open for like the whole show, they didn't need to make Mizuki leave for Takei to move in. I really don't understand that decision.

Damn, this last episode hit hard. Kotaro being 4 yo is the least realistic thing about this series, everything else feels very real. The way it showed the subtle scars everyone carries along life was done very well. It's hard to make a story based on this and keep it interesting and I really appreciate when it's done right. Hope we get a second season but I wouldn't be sad if it doesn't happen because, as life itself, things keep going. There's no "happy ending". It's a cycle of happiness and sadness and how we can overcome the hardships on life.

Episode 6 would have been a better ending to this show than episode 10. That's the episode when the gumshoe comes looking for Kotaro. It would be satisfying as a final episode, but it's more like a speedbump when it's put in the middle of the season. Like, Kotaro's father must still be looking for him, right? He's actively pursuing him and has a history of successfully locating him, but it never comes up again. It is incredibly bizarre pacing.

WHY AM I STILL THINKING ABOUT THIS SHOW

The series was alright, nothing special. I like heartfelt drama as much as the next guy and this had some good moments here & there, but I was somewhat bored. 8/10

Kinda heartbreaking to end it on the grave of his mother, but sure he still has the whole neighbor crew! Definitely a very good anime overall with how it handled perfectly both the comedy/slice of life moments and the sad/educative ones

Whole picture is now visible thanks to this last episode.
this unbelievable story is more than worthy of attention.
forget that it is a anime, forget that it is a drawing. look at it as you would see the wise experiences of fellow human beings cultivated in one very much thoughtful kid.
story itself without question is the guidebook for every and each individual.
here you will see much of a sympathy towards peoples from people and also, dedication for someone else, saying no to your thoughts in order to live in harmony. there is shown listening to others thoughts and feelings as you would listen to yours. even listening to those who are trying their best to not to get under anyone's sight. in this series, as in mostly every anime, you will also see empathy, which presented in this particular case is the essence of my gratitude towards Kotaro Sato and he's friends.
it left me with very much similar feelings like when i watched March comes in like a lion.
Thank you to creators <3

Kotaro Lives Alone is truly the most brilliant gem of last year. I already knew of this show before because Netflix advertised it on their official accounts and I was already planning on watching it too but it's only been this year that I managed to do so. The ridiculous premise of a 4 year old living on his own has set up some gags before it catches you off-guard with the most depressing shit you've ever seen. I think what I like the most about this show is while it deals with really heavy topics of abuse and trauma, it doesn't try to overcomplicate itself with needless philosophical ramblings and melodrama that tend to plague drama anime that deal with serious topics like this especially since the story is told from a child's pov. You can feel the underlying feeling of hope and childlike sincerity in its simplicity despite the story it presents.

The characters especially are all great. Even minor characters left an impression on me despite the short amount of screentime they get because they're all treated with respect by the author. Kotaro's relationship with everyone is very heartwarming. The way he receives their love and he reciprocates it in his own way. They help and learn from each other and grow from their experiences. You can see how everyone has developed a lot since the first episode especially Karino.

Overall this show has really left and everlasting impression on me. I give it a 10/10 and went straight to my favorites. Yes, it's that serious. I absolutely adored this show.

I'll wager Kotaro at least suspected why Shin wouldn't move from that side of the grave.

I think it's slightly overrated.. yeah, the series is pretty heartwarming and touches my soul, but the story isn't thought through the last details and some scenes looking like fillers....

This is the best anime i have watched in a long time.  I tried some many types of anime in that time with 8.5+ ratings but this is the one i liked most.

It is so rare to see that an anime with only 10 eps touches so many issues from life about children and parents and it makes you feel melancholic all time.

It puts you into the darkest truths of life and pull you away from them at the same time that was so beautiful <3

Man, Karino-dono acting like a real bro for Kotarou. Though many signs have already pointed towards Kotarou suspecting his mother's passing, so I wonder if he was just happy that Karino-dono believes in him.

This series turned out to be a hard hitting delight. What first caught my attention was the zany premise combined with Kotarou's hilariously stoic expression. I thought it would be an absurd comedy far removed from reality. While part of my expectation was met, this series managed to ground itself well in the hard hitting life lessons. It simultaneously shows how self-sufficient, mindful & wise Kotarou is while still being a vulnerable child who seeks parental affection & approval. Often times, I would find myself rotating through a cycle of roaring laughter, stomach sinking depression & heartwarming sighs of relief. I think the balloon scene from episode 3 greatly captures the essence of how quickly this could shift between comedy & cold hard reality.

Of course, I think the strongest part of this series was how Kotarou & company would look out for each other. This was every bit about childcare as it was about a child caring for others.

8/10, I so hope there will be more.

Beautiful anime, hopefully there’s more of it, to be more aware of child abuse and neglect, the newspaper part really got me too. Thank you for bringing this anime.

Damn, even the shirt he wears has a backstory. I'm glad Karino lied to Korarou, he doesn't need to know the truth yet.

Couldn't really like any part of it, even asides from the jarring art-style. The frequent comedy scenes were too analytical and bereft of any emotion from the participants to actually deliver anything resembling a punchline, and the attempts it made at drama were, while obvious in intention, too clumsily stapled on to to the backstory of just about every character to be properly effective. It rolls out these maudlin moments at a consistent rate, but without sufficient build-up through the narrative or a prior focus on the characters involved, it doesn't manage to tug at my heartstrings as much as I would've liked.
