| It's between Rintarou Okabe from Steins; Gate, Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in The Shell and Lelouch vi Brittania from Code Geass for me. I didn't like Okabe much initially because of his weirdness, but he slowly grew to be one of my favourite characters when I realised he had more layers to him as a person. I really admire Motoko because of how capable she seems to be in any given situation and the aura of quiet confidence she exudes. She is already well-established as a character at the beginning of the movies and the shows, and her origins are kept hidden, which is a welcome change from the main characters we see in most anime. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Code Geass simply because Lelouch's campaigns were so entertaining. He captivated my attention every time he appeared on screen and salvaged an otherwise poor show and turned it into something really awesome. |

| As many mentioned, Gintoki gets a 10/10 MC status, but he's yet to become one of my favorites. Honorable mentions: 8man, Okabe Rintaro, Natsuki Subaru, Kumoko (Spooder), Beatrice (Umineko) So I'll pick Touman, who is the main character of the Index novels, but not its only protagonist (Accelerator is cool too, and Misaka is good). Starting out as someone controlled by the plot, but still being badass, he slowly becomes one who drives the plot and a gigachad. His will-power is of pure inhuman levels, and the ordeal he goes through is extremely unique for any fictional protagonist. The best thing about him is that he's still the most mysterious character after 50 LN volumes and wanting to know more about him keeps the writing feel fresh. |

| Ginko from Mushishi. He is the perfect vessel for that show. He comes across as fairly ordinary, plain, boring, and unremarkable at the beginning, but as you learn more about the world, about the Mushi, and about his history and personality, it all ties together perfectly. And aside from a few quirks he's just a normal guy, which makes the situations he ends up in even more captivating. It also helps that the voice acting is spot on and his rare comedic reactions are unexpected and priceless. A few that are also very good to me are Natsume (Natsumes Book of Friends), Yuuri/Chito as a join unit (Girls Last Tour), and Yakumo (Rakugo Shinjuu). |

| If anime only and only full fledged protagonist, then Kou Shuurei from Saiunkoku Monogatari. But if Kusuriya no Hitorigoto ever were to have an anime (which is quite a high possibility ImO) then it would switch to Maomao from Kusuriya no Hitorigoto. |

| There are quite a lot of excellent protagonists, I'll go with the three below Yabuki Joe / Ashita no Joe Yagami Light / Death Note Natsume Takashi / Natsume Yuujinchou All amazing in terms of character development but in very different ways. |
