New things we learned in this ep.

1) Falco's last name is revealed to be Grice. Colt's too as they are said to be related. Are they related to Grisha's friend, Grice? The three of them do have similarities in their appearances.
Yes, they are brothers in fact. It's already stated in the first episode
2) Gabi and Reiner are related. They are likely to be cousins.
Yes, they are.
3) Galliard is Marcel's younger brother. He inherited the Jaw Titan from Ymir.
His name is Porco, and his brother Marcel was also a Galliard (surname).
4) Zeke doesn't seem to know that he has royal blood. He didn't know that his mother, Dina Fritz, is a descendant of the royal family. Maybe he knows and kept it a secret, that's possible too.
Spot on.
6) Pieck is the Cart Titan. She said she was just human two months ago. Likely she inherited the Cart Titan just two months ago.
We will find out more about this next episode.

seeing Reiner's side of what happened in the previous seasons makes me want to go back and re-watch to see if there were any hints to suggest that he hated being there ( before we/everyone found out he was a titan)

Surpassingly less intense, and a very character and dialogue focused that is refreshing and very much needed for the change in the direction of the story. Lot of focus and background on the Eldians living in Marley, helps establish their position and stance on the world better.

Huge props for having fluid animation and body movements for a heavily dialogue focused episode. It made the whole thing so much better and far more compelling. There was always something happening on screen. The only part that seemed weird to me was that during the dinner scene Gabi's hands moved way too much for far too long but still very well done.

Lots of new characters, most of them seem likable.

Was it truly was a nightmare for Reiner to live with the corps on Paradis island? I wonder if he liked living there, in a world where ignorance was almost bliss.
Gabi even voiced her concerns that Reiner's story felt insincere. Berthold also pointed out about Reiner developing a different persona back in Season 2. So, Reiner is pretty much in conflict with his resolve. It will be explored more in the next episode.

lmao i dont care about the people talking avout cgi or stiffness or MAPPA bad MAPPA evil MAPPA must die in the comment section.

What i care about is..... DID YMIR REALLY DIED OFFSCREEN?!!!!!! SOMEBODY PLEASE ANSWER ME, I'm in shock, i feel bertrayed, just like when reiner confess he is the armored titan and they did it in the background! WTF ISAYAMA?!!!!!

Overall the episode is really good and im happy MAPPA didnt cut Isayama's trademark jokes, like "tell me how many hair you have in your butt", or "my neighbour said the sea is salty because he piss on it" LMAOO WIT always cut these type of jokes idk why but now im happy~

This season felt darker to me (in a psychological sense) and i love it, well i love WIT's season with all my heart but MAPPA's direction really fit this season's tone i guess.

And if anyone wonder, why am i so positive, im an anime only person who only read the respective chapter of the manga after every season.
Yeah, it's for the best, I guess... It would be gruesome to see her get eaten by Porco's mindless titan. Ymir's love letter to Historia from the last season was taken from this part actually, which is supposed to be a send off farewell to her character.

Also, her character arc back in Season 2 will play an important role in this season, so we would still see some reminiscence of her when everything falls together into place.

I think that the worst thing about SnK is the significant juvenile part of the fandom that amassed in season 1, which will find boring any episode full of information and worldbuilding like this one. They just want the inmediate action with no proper building.

Imagine how it would be with an slower, more faithful adaptation, those fans would moan and moan.

Ohhhhhh! So that's what he meant!! Maybe Reiner indeed changed after visiting the island, and now he wants to set the Eldians free? After watching that scene i believe the chance for that is quite high.

I blame WIT studio for the fact that the anime fanbase are to focus on waiting for fight scene and don't realize that it is the dialogue and lore that make AoT a masterpiece.

WIT have a notorious history on cut some very important dialogue for world building and character development in AoT and change some scene to favor eremika ship.
(There is many Eren and Historia scene got deleted by WIT).

So yeah it's a breath of fresh air to see mappa actually care to make the Heavy dialogue eps look important and enjoyable.

So first of all. I’d like to talk abt the ‘middle’ of the episode from when Reiner was talking abt Sasha and then Eren, is he having second thoughts? Like, he knows that they are normal people, so like is he gonna like not? Also whose that guy with the baby lips and long hair and facial hair. He looked like Eren. ALSO ALSO!! What’s up with Falco? Simp much? Lol. That’s all I had to say.

After four brutal years of war, the Eldian cast of soldiers comes back home to Liberio the Internment Camp. When they were in the train, Gabi and the whole squad are having the time of their lives, nice one there. We now saw the human forms of the Jaw and the Cart Titans (aka Galliard & Pieck).

Pieck being 4-legged and being a Titan for 2 months left her with walking sticks. And Ymir (S2's best girl) volunteered herself to be eaten by Galliard to become the Jaw Titan (which we saw split second on S3). And the top brass of Marley's army are convinced by Zeke to resume their operation on Paradis.

Reiner revisits his memories of the Walls back in Paradis and...the memories that he shared with his family is pretty trivial at most. But since the Eldians living in Marley have a way different view and ideologies than the outside, everything Paradis-related is demonic and savagery to their eyes.

Wait...is the person Falco with what I think it is. Eren mah boi is dat u?
Well aside from the rotoscoped scenes in the early minutes (which was weird and off-putting), this episode was alright. It's fleshing out the Marley side of characters and it seems that we will not see our main cast for a couple of weeks.

We meet some of the other titans and the plan is set to go back to the island. The worldbuilding is so damn good in this anime. The layers of discrimination and internalized oppression is so deep that it feels like this can, and has, happened in real life.

I think the direction was very ambitious but given the time, it didn't look that good in certain parts but the tradeoff with characters being more expressive was good. Surprisingly I didn't know people here on MAL would know about rotoscoping but oh well. I would've preferred 6 episodes but 5 episodes are alright

Reiner is bipolar, I think it should be obvious by this point. While I´m not a fanboy like some people here, one of the biggest strengths of SnK are the hints. If you look at any previous episode between S1 and S3, Reiner have this "soldier" mentality. Every time he starts talking about his duty and being a soldier, he is having his ptsd from Marley, when he wasn´t, he was just another one of the Eldians with Eren and company. He may have his duty and all of that stuff, but deep down he probably cares about the people he spent years with.

----------------------------------------------------------------

While I do appreciate the risk, I feel like the rotoscopy wasn´t necessarily a good move, specially in this series (because the diehard fans are going to trash about it, probably). It looked a bit jarring in some scenes, but there was one about a certain group of people where it worked pretty well, since it showed what mattered in the "camera".
Besides that, is nice having Reiner in camera, specially since he was one of my favorites in the previous seasons (also thank god he and Zeke got the glowup). Let´s wait for everything to become chaos, once the "Demons" make their move.

Nah dude. I really appreciated your post. You provide a much-needed point of view with your absorbing and informative posts. It’s interesting to see how the story differs from the source material. I guess it just gives more reason to go read the manga after the show for more nuanced, fleshed-out interactions. I hope your anime-only friend is enjoying the show as much as you hoped for.

Edit: Now I appreciate the suicide scene (lmao not ”appreciate” but you know what I mean) even more. Because they had to cut out something like the ”walk of shame” or other scenes that would shed light on how dark their world is, they basically put in that brief suicide scene to remind you of the situation we’re in, and to contrast some of the more wholesome moments. That scene did it for me and now I know why it’s there.

I have to admit the animation were choppy here and there, and the they have that one totally beautifully fluid animation as if making it obvious that it was done by a different team in the animation group. Lol XD

The pacing is pretty good. Iirc when i read the manga, this part has so much dialogue in it i refuse reading like most of them. But they able to make me paid full attention to it now.

Poor Reiner tho. Having a PTSD like that and most likely made him have a split personality too. I pity him, but i still can't forgive the marco incident. :((

Being in her titan form for two months walking on all fours messed up her walking. I’m guessing that’s one of the powers of the Cart Titan, being able to stay in titan form for a long time. If you think about it, putting bunkers with machine guns on top makes much more sense now. I was actually wondering how inconvenient that is having to remove the machine guns and place them back on top of the titan after a couple of hours.

I like that the storyline has now switched to the other Eldians perspective and how they view everything that’s happening ( and a little Marley input too ). It’s now filling up plot points that is much needed for the series to help move it along nicely. The world building is something that doesn’t get talked about much in the anime and that’s such a shame since AOT does really great at it.

Spoilers : This episode was pretty sad in some scenes, I mean with how much you can see the suffering that the Eldians on the mainland have to go through ( I mean we already saw this from Grishas past last season but now they are going into more details ). The injured soldiers poor treatment, the clearly brainwashed people ( Gabi and her family for example). Ymir and her outcome.

AOT just has a very compelling storyline that even without the action and the episode being a dialogue heavy one, I’m into it. Two sides of the story is better then just one. This was a good episode

I would lie pretending I don't like action packed episodes, but holy shit do I love SnK for it's world building, the characters and this absolute crazy story so far. I'm sure manga readers who already finished the story see a lot of things with a different view, but I as an anime only watcher can't complain at all.

It's interesting to see the PoV of Reiner. The life of him and the other Eldians in Marley is so different to what we saw on Paradis. Always being seen as something inferior without any room of freedom, no wonder Reiner has PTSD. If you talk about "demons" would you really come up with the story where Sasha stole a potatoe? I don't think so and that shows Reiners inner conflict. I mean if I think back on the first 2 seasons up to the point where he revealed being the Armored Titan he lived a complete different life and was able to do things which aren't possible to do in Marley. Especially on Reiners family you can recognize how brainwashed they really are.

So this is Galliard and Pieck in human form. Tbh I thought the Cart titan was a guy. Holy shit Pieck was in titan form for 2 months straight? No wonder she isn't able to walk normal anymore.

I wonder if Zeke is pretending not knowing about his blood. Also in the conversation at the very end the words "Not in this room" means Marley shouldn't hear about specific things.

Your review of the episode was very pleasing to read. I appreciate that you were a fan of this episode and I agree with everything you said. The cut content is tragic but tolerable. I can't fathom why they didn't remove the OP and ED (maybe NHK wont allow it?). Those 3 extra minutes wouldn't have made it possible to include more scenes but definitely would have allowed for the featured scenes to breathe a bit better. Visually this episode was an upgrade over the first in every single way possible, truly some breathtaking art.

So, they really went and killed off Ymir. That's shitty. God, I liked that arc a lot, but it really just doesn't work with the new plot revelations. Ymir had no reason whatsoever to cooperate with Bert and Reiner. Like really, if they had taken Christa, what would've happened to her? She'd have eaten Eren and become a pawn of Marley. Stupid.

Once this arc is over I'd really recommend you to read this arc in the manga if you're a fan of world building and character interactions. This episode was beautifully adapted but it suffered from the fast nature of this season. You didn't miss out on anything major but you'll see a bunch of short quirky scenes that'll give you a laugh and humanize everyone more.

That's interesting to read. I will definitely do this. Thanks for the info :)
