Pretty great episode today! Personally prefer it over the first one. I've had no issue with the pacing, and even if I would have preferred having no cuts at all, what they cut was in no way indispensable to the arc. The arrangement, from an anime storytelling point of view also makes more sense to me. Moving from flashback to present to flashback again would have been quite weird. (Rip pieck ass but heh)

On the technical side of things, this is most likely the most well animated dialogue episode of the franchise, which surprised me a lot.
The episode has a very surprising amount of character acting and quite ambitious camera work for the most basic of things. Zeke, smoking a a cigarette and Colt walking up the stairs with the camera following their steps, the camera tracking Reiner's head as he wakes up, Zeke giving fucking coffee, Udo getting on edge and expressing his anger through his body language and Gabi doing the same but for her excitement. There's more but I'm too lazy to mention those so I made a little streamable video with some bits of movement from the episode I liked:

VIDEO:

You barely see these in AOT, especially in a pure dialogue episode which impressed me.

Outside of movement, the art itself was also very good, especially in the first half. very strong AD work. I particularely love the lines on the clothing on those Marley uniform, and under the eyes. Reiner also looks the best he has ever looked. The shading, lighting work and expressions were also on point

Props to Reiner's shots which look quite fantastic and very accurate to the emotions Isayama drawin in the manga. Never seen Reiner look this good. That Porco shot is also amazing

The direction was very nice and I wish episode 1 was as well directed as this one. Daisuke Tokudo did a tremendous work and the episode has a LOT of atmosphere. That mini subplot of the Eldian killing himself overnight and his family and neighbours morning his death the next day, all taking place in the background was a super nice touch which added more tension and reminded us that the Liberio ghetto was far from a cozy place. The color work was also pretty nice and I enjoyed it for the most part.

I also really loved the background art of this episode, the props, walls, houses ect were very well drawn and on part with what I expected from Kusanagi. Very good stuff. Another visual aspect that surprised me is the photography. I've seen dozens of complaints about it for last episode when I thought it was honestly innofensive. But in this episode, I found it honestly very good. Probably Asakawa's best work. With this episode's good direction, she succefully gave each scene a different atmosphere and it's very easy to distinct all the different moods of the episode by simply looking at how it looks. The photography helped making the drawings look very crisp and I really hope people watch this episode in high quality because this is how it deserves to be watched. I hope I wont be seeing terrible "no blur" edits that just slap a baffling over-done sharpen filter and saturation.

So yeah, very satisfied with this episode. This and Bystander are probably my two favorite pure dialogue episodes, this one taking the cake visually-wise. Congrats to the team for pulling it off. I hope to see more of those and potentially even better for the future. I can't wait for the big action episodes!

Nice to see people appreciative of the work Mappa've put in so far. I agree, this episode was excellent, a lot more visually engaging than I was expecting. Considering it was mostly an ep for dialogue it went by in a breeze.

This rotoscoping is really interesting to me. The episode was basically perfect (yeah, I know about dialogue getting cut, but what can you do) and some director just randomly decided to add rotoscope to the Gabi scene...Why? The funny thing is that, this probably took more time than the non-rotoscope scenes.

Horrible pacing. Episode felt rushed.
I dont think anime-only understood who pieck was
Too much information in a single episode. No time to introduce the new characters.

Make up your mind is either the pacing was too fast or too slow. You first point out that the pacing is too fast which would imply that they are rushing/skipping content, then you complain about too much information, when they literally cut out some of the dialogue that can be cut out without hurting the plot and also basically summarizing some dialogue heavy scene instead of following them manga word for word so it would be more easier for anime only to follow.

So my question is what did you actually want, did they need to cut more dialogue to condense the information more since "too much info is bad as as you said" but if they did that you would say its extra rush then, so I need clarification here.

Because it seems like a lose lose situation either way for Mappa.

Will just like to point out whether it is Wit Studio or Mappa we would get this said pacing because its the same script writer from previous season. So this pacing criticism has nothing to do with Mappa.

In an alternate world where Wit is the one that is still animating this season I just have to wonder if these said people would be criticizing Wit studio this much.

02. The warriors' return to Liberio could've been much grander. Omitting their walk through the city was a bad idea as the hateful glares of Marleyan citizens would have added a much needed, darker undertone to their victorious return. It was essentially a weird, twisted walk of shame in the manga. The directors made a much sweeter moment out of it (the slight feel good music wasn't helping either and neither did it help during the scene at the Middle-Eastern bay) by omitting the ugly details that took place before it and in doing that, the scene lost a lot of its tragic quality. Showing actual, detailed and inevitably sad overview shots of the internment district would've helped in setting the mood too, but we're dealing with a rushed adaptation here, and there sadly isn't much time/resources to pay attention to these things.

I especially agree with this. That part is also very important to show the sad irony of discrimination towards Eldians. They are the ones who put their lives on the battlefield and the ones who provide their titans power, they are the very reason the people of Marley live in luxury and safety. And yet after returning from the hell of war for the benefit of the Marleyans that is the kind welcome they receive from the people who should be grateful. It should have been included, maybe by removing the OP or the ED for more episode time, given how important the theme of discrimination is in this story.

I'm just pointing that out or making sure you guys are aware. This is just sad I wish these discussion were like previous were persons discuss the plot, now everyone is a anime expert pointing out all the tiny flaws in the season, but when it was wit despite their flaws we barely saw anyone pointing out these flaws.

Just look at the discussion Majority of the conversation is about the technically aspects of the anime, most people are way too focus on that to give too shits about the story. I may have to lok look elsewhere maybe the more casual side when it comes to discussion because this side.....

I like the world building that we are getting right now, but what I find hard to make sense of is why the Eldians with the 9 titan powers are agreeing to help that shit country Marley that's abusing their people and treating them in sub-human ways. If they have the great powers of war in their hands for all those years, why tf wouldn't the Eldians just turn on them? It's one thing if they didn't have any power and were oppressed, but in this case they have the power and allow themselves to be oppressed.

Man they are really laying it on thick with the Nazi regime references xD The salute, the armbands, the Eldian ghettos, the "race of devils" talks...

On the one hand, it means we don't need a lot of info to understand the situation in Marley, just one look at those details and you understand the whole dynamic without needing any explanation (to those who feel the introduction to Marley feels rushed, this is why I disagree)

On the other hand, I'm not sure they're doing themselves a favour by creating a world so close to real life, it's actually breaking the fourth wall for me a lot more than I think they intended... If they keep pushing that direction, it's going to end up feeling silly rather than serious, mixing Nazis with titans (kinda like Nazi vampires in Hellsing, although that was silly on purpose xD)

I'll have to wait and see, maybe it's just a way to get information to us quickly so they can move on to our main storyline

it looks like the eldeans are constantly being followed, dont know about that.

Although it was more dialogue-heavy, I still enjoyed this episode more than the previous one.

Going from the PTSD "Boom!" from the General to Gabi's "Boom!" in the Braun household was just masterful direction. They're really setting up this season fantastically.

Reiner trying to paint a picture of the "island devils" only to fail miserably and sound more like he's reminiscing about old friends was also beautifully done, and underlines just how conflicted an individual he's become as he's realised years of Marleyan brainwashing were completely false. The people on the island were just like those in the internment camps with families, loved ones, and personalities of their own : good or bad.

From the preview of the next episode, I'm assuming they'll cover some of the Reiner flashbacks in the next episode as one entire segment as opposed to going back and forth like they did in the manga, which would make sense.

The only slight nit picks would be the artistic choices on the animation scenes between Reiner and the 4 young cadets outside, which I wasn't a huge fan of, but it's still not bad.

The OST is understated and used sparingly in this episode, but it only serves to highlight the brilliant job the VA's are doing and fits the darker, grittier tone that they are going for this season.

Bloody loved this episode.

The best scene from this chapter what the flashback of season 3, animated by WIT. Mappa relies too much on CG and overuses 2D acting on irrelevant scenes. Who is in charge of the budget in this series?? I really hope the quality of animation will get better, those camera movements made me dizzy.

I am not criticizing a studio. I am giving my opinion of this episode. And I will also be here to give positive comments if I like a episode.

If you see my comment history, I also criticised episode 8 and 9 of season 3 part 2 regarding "grisha backstory".I insulted Wit studio back then. The same critics.

But this one was even worse.
Not only they cut important parts, they also rushed everything.
At least WIT had good pacing. My point is that they are trying to fit too much content in a single episode. Its so much content that they even need to cut some of it. So yes, the episode can feel rushed and still have lots of informations.

New things we learned in this ep.

1) Falco's last name is revealed to be Grice. Colt's too as they are said to be related. Are they related to Grisha's friend, Grice? The three of them do have similarities in their appearances.

2) Gabi and Reiner are related. They are likely to be cousins.

3) Galliard is Marcel's younger brother. He inherited the Jaw Titan from Ymir.

4) Zeke doesn't seem to know that he has royal blood. He didn't know that his mother, Dina Fritz, is a descendant of the royal family.

5) Someone commited suicide. I don't recognise who though.

6) Pieck is the Cart Titan. She said she was just human two months ago. Likely she inherited the Cart Titan just two months ago.

7) The Tybur family has the Warhammer Titan. They were never involved in the war but decided to help Marley with the Titan.

8) One of the Eldians who has PTSD look like Eren. And he lost a leg? My guess is that he cut off his leg and doesn't regenerate to fake being injured.

9) Reiner doesn't want Gabi to inherit the Armored Titan. He told Falco to inherit it instead to "save Gabi".

10) In the scene where Zeke and the warriors are holding a meeting, he said there are no Marleyans, "not in this room". Maybe he knew all along that Marleyans are spying on the Warriors.

11) Gabi and the others remind Reiner of his young days with Bertholdt, Annie, Marcel and Galliard.

12) Apparently, Reiner's "reliable older brother" act he put on during his mission in Paradis is inspired by Marcel's personality.

I may have missed some points. I'll edit this if I find something new.

Finally someone say positive and important things about this episode

The rotoscoping looked pretty bad. The fact that it's only episode 2 and MAPPA is already having to resort to this is worrying. Aside from that though it was a pretty good episode, we got some nice development for the new characters and world building.

This episode was definitely one of the calmest in SnK but now we know what is happening in the world. I do wonder if most Eldians are as brainwashed as those kids and Reiner... Only one can save them ;)
But i do guess now why Gabi will be hated in the future.

The calm before the storm, the calmer the episodes we will see the bigger the storm will get.

What intrigues me the most is those captain's words, "except that one sentence that Zeke said". I do wonder what he meant by that...but i guess it won't take long before we find out.

I also thought that was weird how "scary" Reiners story was supposed to be...somethings fishy here.

Overall it was a good episode. Pieck was drawn a lot better in the manga in my opinion but most of the other characters look good. OP is definitely one of my favourite openings after listening to it more and ED is good too.

My opinion of Reiner has changed a lot since the last season and he’s probably one of my favourite characters now. His conversation with Falco about Gabi was interesting.

Yeah, it's good that some people noticed this episode is so suspiciously calm.

It's what reiterated by Reiner, "There is no Marleyan here in this room, huh?"

Cmon bruh, I am not judging shit, but you indeed are, even if you haven't even watched the show xD Fairy Tail is shit, and yet I love it.

Cmon bruh, why you gotta be like that bruh? Do you actually think that you have a better taste or something, bruh? Bruh, People have very different tastes, you gotta learn to accept that bruh. No anime is objectively better than rest, except Sangatsu obviously xD

Pieck is cute and interesting, honestly loved how she was laying on that couch during that meeting.

Seems the Anime now mentioned that it was 4 years since Zeke's defeat by Levi, eventho someone was kind enough to answer me last week.

Loving this mature and older Reiner. The way he described all the guys on the island was pretty funny, but its interesting to see how the people there view everyone on that island.

Everyone saying about spotting Eren, rewatched it and yeah spotted him second time around.

Where did you see him? Which timestamp? Was it the guy with one leg?
I can assure you, there is no one named Eren in this episode. Perhaps the people are talking about Grandpa and Grandma Yeager whom we see briefly when they greet Zeke and the Eldian warriors' homecoming in Liberio.
I just realized that all of my favorite characters, beside being stunningly beautiful, also happen to be exceptionally skilled murder machines. \('-')/
