| Well, that was an enjoyable conclusion to this arc, and what a number of surprises I've had so far. I'm surprised at how this arc actually fleshed out Kongou and her friends, they didn't spend too much time in the spotlight, but the time they spent felt worthwhile. I'm also surprised at how I ended up enjoying Misaki's character. I expected her to be some manner of insufferable, but I like how her sense of justice is akin to Misaka's, although coming from a different perspective and with different methodologies. From their powers to their personalities, they're completely incompatible, but they somehow work well together despite all that. I'm pleasantly surprised. From this arc, I also enjoyed the amount of battle analysis and planning, where characters spend time using all the tools and powers available to them, and then make multiple contingencies in case everything beforehand fails. There's a lot of mindfulness for many of the featured characters, where they seem aware of their own limitations and put in the effort to make up for those limitations. The most fearsome abilities become even more formidable when the user is also flexible in applying those abilities. On a similar note, Misaki's ability is, thus far, the most terrifying ability I've seen in the series, if just by how creative Misaki is at using her abilities and protecting her ability's secrets. Every other Level 5 seem powerful enough to level a building, but I think if Misaki wanted to, she could brainwash everyone in the building and have them demolish the building for her. It's a miracle that she didn't turn out evil. Lastly, if there's one thing I can compliment the Railgun series on, the series knows how to use its Touma. There's something about the Index half that always bothered me, but I've never quite figured out what. Maybe it's because of how incomprehensible the magic side is? Granted, I'm used to Type-MOON's magic system, but that's also complicated to the point where using hyperboles doesn't come close to describing its arcane nature. Maybe it's because there's too much Touma, and I don't find him as interesting as Misaka for a main character. Yeah, pretty sure that's it. I feel like I came to this conclusion years ago, and it's reaffirmed here again. Misaka is a heavily flawed character who tries her best to fix her own problems, avoids involving her friends if she can help it, feels immense guilt when they get hurt inadvertently, and ends up needing saving herself once she gets in over her head, usually by Touma. Convenient? Yes. Earned? Arguable. At least, as someone who is a sucker for hard-earned endings, I'm fine with Touma showing up to magically fix everything. I do want to see Misaka and friends survive their ordeals, as they're just trying their best to preserve their peaceful, uneventful daily life. Because of this though, I don't mind when Touma shows up to save the day in Railgun. Through the lens of Index, it's Touma getting the girl(s) by being a bumbling shounen protagonist. Through the lens of Railgun however, it can be interpreted as Misaka getting the boy by tenacity, honesty, and barbaric levels of violence, while also preserving and finding friendship through hardheaded, fire-forged battles. It's been a while, but I'm glad to finally be back watching Railgun. |
