After putting it off for two years, I've finally watched it in a situation where I can cry as loudly and as much as want. There were some parts that were a bit too dramatic for me, the parts with the ex and Kyouko, however the latter one was at least satisfying in the end.

The anticipatory grief really got me, having personally experienced it. I really understood why Sakura wanted to spend her days with someone who could give her both realism and normalcy, someone who didn't have a bond with her at first. But of course, it's sad for Kyouko, her best friend, who said had she known that Sakura was dying, she would have spent more time with her. Again though, it different...there's a bit more pain involved spending time with your loved ones, than to spend someone who wasn't your loved one (but does become one).

I liked the relationship between Sakura and Haruki, and the scene with Sakura in The Little Prince style was really well done. In general, Sakura said a lot of interesting things, and just like Haruki, I also learned a lot from her. The whole thing with how their choices led them where they were was great, and I suppose it would've had even more of an impact on me if I didn't just watch something this season that had a profound moment regarding choices as well. Still, I liked it. The part with the names made me bawl because it was meant to be, but again, not due to coincidences or fate. I've seen/read stories where someone says that everything they've done thus far in their life, it was to lead them to the other person. However, it didn't hit me less hard in this movie. It worked because Haruki changed from someone who didn't care about other people, to someone who did.

I also wanted to say that at first, I honestly thought maybe there's a chance I wouldn't like the movie as much as I did, because of how Haruki is one of those protagonists who is stoic and keeps to himself. We all know how these stories go down, they are changed by the person they meet—someone who is completely opposite from them. Not a complaint of course, since time and time again, I've been either moved by or love those relationships. This time as well. Particularly the part where Haruki cried at the end, after not having done so for 10 days after Sakura's death. That was a heartbreaking moment. Also the after credits scene where Haruki visited Sakura's grave with Kyouko, them seemingly to have become really good friends. Due of meeting Sakura, he chose to change himself and work hard towards what it means to live (based on Sakura's philosophy). To create bonds and to interact with others. I've been on and off being like Haruki, sometimes just not caring to create bonds with others, keeping to myself. I've thought to myself that it's not others who can make me happy, but myself. But I like Sakura's outlook, that the people you interact with make you who you are.

This marks my third encounter (if my memory is correct) of a story with unexpected death of a person who's dying. I know typically it can leave a sour taste for people, since it comes out of nowhere. But I think it's quite fitting here. As others have mentioned, the serial killer was mentioned early on in the movie, and additionally, in one of the first conversations Sakura has with Haruki, she replied that Haruki himself could die tomorrow, yet he doesn't actively try to fulfill his bucket list. Was the way that Sakura died necessary? No, of course not. She died such a gruesome death when she didn't have to. It could've been another kind of accident, which would probably be a little more acceptable to the audience. Still, I don't think Sakura's death not being caused by her illness was a bad choice in writing.

I feel like there's more that I want to say/thought about while watching the movie, however, I can't remember them. Overall, I enjoyed watching Sakura and Haruki interact and how Haruki grew as a person. The title is confusing for people coming into the movie, and although we get the meaning of it quite early on, it actually had even more of an impact at the end. They both said the same thing to each other, a sentence that would make no sense to anyone else but them. It's their way of saying, "I love you," but in the way Sakura wrote in her letter to Haruki...that their relationship can't be described through simple terms like love or friendship. And I think that's beautiful.

Bravo that was great. I really enjoyed Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai, it was emotional, powerful, moving, thus becoming a work of art.

Story was good, the plot of two characters of opposite demeanours slowly rubbing off on one another, until they were both leaning off the other for support and comfort now as changed individuals in their own ways was truly touching. Themes were incredibly well handled, the core themes, "death and living" portrayed through Sakura living her shortened life to the fullest and, "importance of others" portrayed through Haruki slowly leaving his shell chipping his uneventful and almost unhappy days off, turned around with help from Sakura was interesting. The result of all this, was making being able to make overall message ,"live life to the fullest" very clear and impactful in many ways.
Personally although the anime gave a lot of hints to the story making it semi-predictable, i was still shocked non the less and thought it was amazing. And I don't think its hard to deny that, the twist to Sakura's end was a shock to many, equally heart breaking.

Characters, wow. Haruki's development from an anti-social, shell of a person to finding meaning in life from Sakura was interesting. Sakura's reveal to the viewers as a energetic big mouth with little worry to her current condition, to someone truly afraid of her fate and not wanting to be alone was heart wrenching. Imo, both these characters roles were done well. Their, "ying yang" personalities that would hinder a normal relationship, was beautifully drawn out with their interactions to show two characters trusting in another.

Visuals were colourful, scenery was gorgeous and animation was consistent all the way through.

OST had a good selection to dampen or lighten the mood. VA's were phenomenal, could really hear the emotion in there voices, have to hand it to the voice acting in this movie, extremely well done.

One complaint(?) i'd give is, yes, i did think the protagonists both bonded well together under the time they were given, certain scenes showed their relationship well, but i felt that simply, the amount of their relationship that was shown to the viewer did not reflect how close and strong their relationship was. Let me explain, as a movie tight scheduling is inevitable, so i'd agree nothing much could be done to further show this bond without chipping already essential categories down. But personally i feel like if it was, lets say, a 13 episode anime, i feel like then they would of been able to shown their relationship to it's full extent, their time together, their moments and memories together, a stronger sense of their feelings to the other, giving it that extra oof. However I'm no anime studio, and i could imagine doing this could come with it's own down sides, dragging certain points out etc. That isn't to say i'm completely unhappy with what was shown, the firework scene, hospital scene i feel like were significant enough at showing their relationship to get the message across, quality over quantity i suppose.

All in all 8/10, Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai was a great watch, they presented their themes well, the message they were portraying was clear. Again, i believe if it was a little longer, Sakura and Haruki's relationship would of had a bigger impact on me, but that's just a personal whim.

Okay, I finally found the courage to watch this movie. Surprisingly, I actually didn't cry. I actually got a lot sadder when Sakura was around (since I was anticipating the moment) than when she died. It might sounds insensitive, but the reason to that is because it didn't actually seem all that sad to me, because in the end, rather than a tragic story, the movie felt so much more like a love letter to life.

Of course, not gonna lie, I'm really going to miss Sakura. I didn't get to know her for a very long time but it didn't prevent me from quickly getting very attached to her. She's just so lovable, and not only that, she is actually a beautiful character, and so human. She reminded me a lot of Kaori from Your Lie in April, but I found the writing for Sakura to feel much more... Sincere ? I'm not really sure, but her character definitely hit me more in the feels. That's it, I miss her.

I also really liked Haruki. Initially I thought he'd be just the typical lonely mc, and to be honest he kinda is, but just like Sakura, he actually felt so human. I related a lot to him. I can't say I love him because he didn't really stand out but still, his character arc made an impact on me.

Overall, as I said, I really took this movie as a way to tell us to enjoy life, to love life, because we can't know when everything will end. And of course, I also took it as a way to remind us that people who we can be important to, and who can be important to us, actually exist, and we'd better find them and care about them while we still can.

And that's why I loved the "twist" about Sakura's death. At first I was very confused, because I thought it was some cheap attempt to shock viewers, but actually it just perfectly goes along with the message, and what Sakura told Haruki about how we can't know when death will come. Sakura thought she'd die from her illness, and yet she just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong moment. Tragic, yes, of course it is, but at the same time, suffering from this illness allowed her to embrace life. That way, when she died, she died happy.

So for my final thoughts, that was a beautiful movie and as I said, Haruki was really relatable and Sakura was a great character. It wasn't perfect though, I have a few complaints like for example that I felt everything that happened after Sakura's death felt a bit dragged on, as impactful as it was.
But overall, I loved this movie, so I give it a strong 7/10.

The lame random stabbing ruined the story for the most part, it's lazy writing.
Yeah it's tragic and unexpected but also completely unrealistic.
Probability of something of the sort happening in Japan is less than 0.0003% yet here we have the most unlucky girl in the world. Oh, and cardiac penetrating stab wounds are fatal around 50% of the time. She really is unlucky HUH.
It was already on shaky ground with the undisclosed pancreatic illness #1 and it still decided to through in something that random. While it is in line thematically there's a fine line between meaningful developments to the themes and just throwing out tragedy porn and shock value.
6/10, it had potential though.

Simliar to Your Name in a sense that, on the second viewing you are a lot better able to understand how this movie is one of the best to exist. The foreshadowing, and symbolism set up throughout the movie is set up to well to create such a great conclusion to the story (even though it so sad). Being able to see this as more than a romance story and see the deeper themes will allow you to view this movie as what it is, a masterpiece 10/10

This wasn't anywhere near of what I've been expecting, same apathetic main dude and cheerful main girl plot don't work on me, and it won't be an exaggeration to term it as a way disappointing Your lie in April rip-off.

4/10, atleast some of those visuals were eye-catching.

Spoilers

At the start when the MC was leaving for school on the news it said that there was a stabbing... And as we know there was another... Also why did he have to cut Sakura's life short, she only had a few months left.

Having a mortal disease AND being stabbed in the street on the FIRST DAY after she left the hospital ? well that is ridiculous lol should have just say she was in a car accident at least

I mean if you want to be realistic, don't go too far, it's some bad sitcom level shit right there...
"car accident is too cliché", to be fair this kind of series is kinda cliché too, maybe less in animated form tho

Hated it. Guy is an antisocial incel. This is pure author projection (male author?).

So who stabbed her?? did her friends not care enough about this as it was never mentioned again.
Also who confesses at a grave side??
I suppose the only other character involved just falls for the guy she disliked.
I expected a lump in the throat and got nothing.
Disappointing to say the least.

Kyaaa!! So... BEAUTIFUL! I cried not once, not twice, but three times during this movie. During the third time, I couldn't stop crying. I cried soooo much. I wanna cry just thinking about it. I did know that she was going to die, since the beginning establishes that (Hence the melancholic feeling I felt during the whole movie. Even when I was dancing to the songs with my cat and our glowsticks at our sleepover, I still couldn't help but feel that melancholic feeling.), when it hit me, especially in the way that it did, I just couldn't stop crying. Sakura x Haruki is literally OTP!! They are the cutest. Any moment that they spend together, I loved. I want them to be together forever. Their dynamic is amazing, as well as them helping each other progress as humans. Also, despite the melancholic feeling I had during this show, I had a lot of happy, joyful feelings as well, such as when Sakura and Haruki were spending time together at the beach, hotel, and ESPECIALLY THE FIREWORKS SCENE MADE ME CRY TEARS OF JOY. In short, I love this movie, and I love you, Sakura Yamauchi! I never wanted you to pass away, and you will always be in my, as well as Haruki's hearts. You taught me so much, and I will apply your life lessons!

Wow, what a twist. They did set it up with the news report at the beginning of the movie. Plus Sakura's words about not being sure if you might die tomorrow... Yeah it's honestly a great twist for the film thematically. Great way to build tension teasing us on the last message he sent to her as well. Right after the fakeout of her actually getting discharged from the hospital as well.

It didn't hit me super hard emotionally; I'm more of a sucker for family dynamics like in Wolf Children or Clannad, but this was a great film.

I really enjoyed this, and found myself connecting with the characters pretty well. A lot of what Haruki said was amusing to me. At least in the beginning. This is the first time in awhile I've watched an anime movie the whole way through without pausing to take a break in the middle. So I was quite captivated.

That being said, it was a pretty simple and straight forward story, aside from the curveball towards the end. Sakura getting stabbed did seem a bit over-the-top, all things considered. So much so that I was almost expecting Kyouko and Haruki to also get stabbed before the credits starting rolling. That would've been a truly wild ending.

I will say, as a side note: I've been reading a lot about unsolved mysteries lately. It somewhat irks me that there is a random stabbing in this anime and they get the guy who did it within like, minutes. Yet we have people who are caught on camera who are still out there, getting away with their murders.

Anyway, it was quite a good movie.

Was hoping to hear more about the stabber. Was it the guy she kicked in the balls? Was it the ex-bf? Random passerby? Like why did he confess?
Pretty interesting twist. But suppose life doesnt have those answers. Doesnt need to be melodramatic. Random guy down on his luck then went too far I guess.

Usually movies like this are "too" short to hook me up and enjoy them as much as I enjoy longer anime series, but this one was done exceptionally really well.

After Sakura's answer to what she think it means to live, I really like the contrast that became obvious between the two: Even when she was dying, she has being "more alive" than Haruki, who didn't want to communicate with anyone (and hence "not living"). But at the end even after her death, she gave him her meaning to live for.

So to sum it up:
Sakura was "Living with Dying"
Haruki was "Dead while Living", but at the end became "Living while Living", which was actually beautiful conclusion, if that makes sense.

It doesn't matter, because it isn't a crime/detective story, and it could be anything else like traffic accident, terrorist attack, earthquake or whatever, and it won't change anything about the story/message at all.
But if you really need an answer to this, then at the beginning there was a talk about a serial killer, so it makes sense he was the one who killed her. It foreshadowed this event, and I see no other reason why would he be mentioned otherwise.

I'm in love with predictable anime that can make me cry. From the beginning we already know that she WILL die, we already expected her life to be interrupted and that she can complete at least most of her goals and then... her life was simply interrupted, and that was not predictable, maybe some people had taken it from the beginning that she was going to die before the time they thought she would, but I didn't, and this surprise factor caught me off guard, I found myself without that feeling of security that I expect from watching this kind of anime, and honestly, I thought this was great, it was what the anime needed to not be totally generic. I liked the dynamic between the two where the heroine brings out what the main character doesn't know he's capable of and makes him "bloom", I love this type of couple and I enjoy seeing this kind of thing happening. This anime made me very sad and very happy, the time I spent watching it was worth it.
