hardly. for half of the action scenes THERE WAS NO SOUNDTRACK! i was shocked that they left most of the big scenes with no music at all. Perfect Blue is a movie with one of the greatest soundtracks of all time, not Akira

it's a snorefest...and you have no comeback to me saying "where was the music for half the movie?" that's what made Akira an 8 and Perfect Blue a 10. Akiras scenes didn't hit coz they didn't have music!

It is fucking trash, and yes obviously you are suppose to review things based on the time period but even back then it was just fucking flashy garbage with good animation. Junk with good animation is still junk but a lot of the plebs on this website think otherwise. Kimi no na wa for example is terrible but it has good animation so its a top 10.
@Dhaarok Why would you rate something based on time period? Enough things back then hold up better than most modern thing where you shouldn't have to do that. I don't really understand that mindset. That being said, I think Akira is fantastic.

Came here just to see if anyone else felt the same way. That kinda sucked lol I just finished watching it and I'm not really sure I got any of that. The whole plot just feels like a mess. And while yes the animation can be good at times, I didn't really like it most of the time. Idk it just feels a bit overhyped. Like I was expecting a more, but it was a bit of a disappointment. Like yeah I get that it came out in the 80s when there really wasn't anything like this, but that doesn't really make me appreciate it more. I just didn't like this movie :(

An 8 feels generous imo, I really didn't like this movie but yeah I agree with you on the music

Not just you, I also feel that way. I mean this anime is unique and considered the best of its time. But the story has a messy plot, mostly unclear pacing.

Im sure there is some other Teenager, out there, beeing all like "Whats so special about this? So overrated. aM i tHe oNLy oNE?".

We get it. You're different^^
Seriously, you saying "It didn't interest me", is as far as it goes. That's pretty much what you got.
Doesn't mean that it's a bad movie, tho.

This anime only got good in the last fifteen minutes, I don't think this anime is good, but I respect it for being innovative for its time.

The plot is really messy and there is no emotional connection to the characters at all. It just didn't interest me and all the violence and explosions for nothing just bored me. Why is this movie considered a masterpiece?

It was a technical marvel back in its time.

It's kind of similar to Avatar (2009) where the 3D experience made the movie really shine. There was nothing ground-breaking in Avatar otherwise.
@KreatorX Couldn't have explained it any better, Im sure you just had to have BEEN there while this was released to understand its full appeal
remember the lesson, not the disappointment.

I mean, it really crams multiple volumes of the manga together and skips many important parts of the core story. So I am not surprised that people will have opinion such as the one OP has stated here. Personally though, I first read the manga and then watched the movie. Having known the full story, I felt that the animation of the movie felt so much more enjoyable if I just ignore the story (cause I already know the main plot from the manga). Imo, manga is 9/10 while movie (after reading the manga) was 8.5/10. If I had watched the movie without reading the manga, I believe it would be around 7.5-8/10 for me.

It's understandable why one could view it as bad. Lots to criticize. The plot itself and the characters arguably aren't special by modern standards. But if you're capable of watching it through the lens of someone back then, it's amazing especially the animation -- which feels ahead of the current time despite being animated in the 1980s.

@Acesonnall Animation doesn't equal to design or art style. Akira's animation was subpar for the majority of the movie. Characters moved either way too abruptly or awkwardly.

@SnipersKgrooWife Totally get that art style doesn't equal animation; I was praising the motion—160 k+ hand-drawn cels, lots of shots done "on ones," pre-scored lip-sync—more than the designs. I love that fluid, handcrafted feel, but if the movement comes off stiff or abrupt to you that’s valid. Seems we weight historical technique vs. modern vibe differently, and that’s cool—always interesting to hear what lands (or doesn’t) for other viewers.

@JoeChip Well, I won't know whether I'll like it or dislike it unless I watch it, genius. I don't know why you're even on the post that expresses an opinion you disagree with IN THE TITLE, if you can't handle opposing opinions.

@SnipersKgrooWife

There is a difference between having a differing opinion and being just plain wrong about a fact, so don't be sour if someone points that out.

Watch this video and maybe you might get an idea about why you are wrong in your observation about the animation in Akira.

No. I find it technically good, not amazing tow atch but very good, especially due to highlights. The atmosphere of the city too, a special thing it evokes, bcs aside from that the plot is indeed really weak and a slog, even the action itself was not as thrilling as it is hyped up to be.

Best thing about it were indeed the slowed music edits with the visuals of the movie on youtube. It has a nice aesthetic but that is it.

The ghost in the shell og movie was nothing amazing either, but the visuals there and atmosphere, vibes were pleasant enough to make it even the plot there work better in being good compared to akira
