Like so many times in anime, it's what I find bizarre about these shows - their personalities are so unrealistic for high school students.

I don't understand why they made this show about high school. Especially that they've set it up around around kids who live by themselves - like, where's the money for rent and food coming from? You could just make them 25 & 26 (the protagonists) and let them be coworkers.

This story could be crazy-realistic (much more than now, at least) had they made them young adults.

This is the fastest I've ever seen a relationship start in an anime. Went from meeting and trading barbs in episode 1 to hand holding in public w/o either of them blowing it out of proportion, a date, hand on a date, going to another city, buying underwear together, and finally sleeping in the same bed. All that was missing was the kiss but even that got handled with class.

I like how Bunny senpai and Sakuta can trade barbs with each other and it not feel like they are trying too hard or are rude to each other just to get the upper hand and their kill move is saying something cute.

I also like how Sakuta tries to help everyone and even when kicked in the ass he still tries to help. Also shout out to the chick who kicked his ass for admitting she was wrong and letting him kick her ass. And he actually did it.

Can't believe Mai's mother has lost awareness of her. That really freaked me out, I can't imagine how that must make her feel. How is she managing to keep such a cool exterior?! But also, that tenacity is really making me love her as a character. Can't wait to watch more.

@Alex796 You're 100% correct. It's a shame that every anime ever has to have a high school setting to draw in the viewer numbers.

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien handled this pretty well back in the day, by having the first two episodes be high school setting, and then having a time skip.

@xatm092 I love it that you've mentioned Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien!
You should read my review about it! I believe it's the highest scoring one on MAL.

It's actually one of my favorite anime shows ever and just a brilliant story with a brilliant ending.

@Alex796

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien was the second ever anime I watched on my PC, back in around 2004, and it broke me. I genuinely think it partially shaped my avoidant attitude to relationships and romance in my teens.

I can't find your review that easily but perhaps that's because I'm tired and inept!

EDIT: I found the review. What you said is completely accurate.

@xatm092 Thank you very much! Much appreciated for liking my review.

Like I mentioned in the review, I got only a glimpse of the first two or three episodes back when I was 14 and I just realized this story was way too adult for me. But I still remembered it over the years and had every intention of getting back to it once I was to develop an adult mindset to judge it properly.

It's not hard to see where this is all heading. It's like watching a trainwreck in slo-mo.

Also, I can see why many people compare it to Monogatari.

I know Mai's mom forgetting about her has to sting. This puberty syndrome is the worst curse ever! It's really awesome how Sakuta is putting everything on hold to try and make Mai visible again. I'm really liking these characters, they're cool and the growing bond between them is really pulling at the heart strings!

Mai-san: I realized she never cared about anything other than making money off of me!
In the bikini photoshoot incident Mai-san got hit simultaneously by overt sexualization and by her mother's disregard for her daughter's wishes and well-being. The topic of Mai-san's mother exploiting her daughter gets explored more in later episodes, but it is almost brushed past in this dialogue with Sakuta as they walk home from the grocery store. In this episode, there's slightly more focus on the swimming suit and photoshoot itself, with the main topic being Mai-san's general attitude towards the show business.

Mai-san: Did you know I've lived here for two years and I haven't even been to Kamakura?
Sakuta: You mean...
Mai-san: It's not a date.
[...]
Mai-san: I can't believe you're talking about how you like another girl while on a date.
[...]
Mai-san: For a younger boy, you sure are cheeky.
Sakuta: I just don't want our date to end.
Mai-san: Very well. If you're not ready to let me go yet, I don't mind continuing our date.
I like how they are not at all embarrassed when talking about stuff related to romantic relationships. Mai-san only blushes slightly when Sakuta says his dirty jokes, but otherwise they are very direct in talking through what is or isn't going on.

Random people stopped to listen to Sakuta's survey about remembering Sakurajima Mai. I don't know how realistic this part is, but if it is, then it's an interesting cultural difference in Japan. In most countries I know, most people actively ignore such people on the streets.

What will you do if I start shaking and crying, saying I don't want to fade away? [...] Thank you. Thank you for not giving up on me.
In the train Sakuta said that Mai-san is hiding how worried she is, and in the hotel she opened up quite a bit, though partly indirectly.

Seto Asami's performance is, as always, amazing.

Off-topic: as much as I enjoy Rascal Does not Dream ..., the anime Oregairu has been a disappointment for me, and I think it's overrated. I bring it up, because I think I've finally stopped hearing Yuigahama Yui from Oregairu in all performances by Touyama Nao, who plays Koga, which is good news.

Episode 2—where do I even begin, and where do I end?! I want to comment on every single second! Oh my God, I’m at the peak of enjoyment—and this is my second time watching the anime, not the first!

**First of all**: The reason I even started watching this anime was the scene at **minute 8:50**, when the little girl cries. I saw that scene in a YouTube short, and that’s how I discovered the anime and decided to watch it! I was laughing, saying, “What’s wrong with this idiot kicking the girl’s butt?”

There’s also that super famous scene at **minute 18:56**, when Mai-san kicks Sakuta out of the apartment! These two scenes are literally everywhere—you’ll find GIFs and short clips of them all over the internet…

**Secondly**: The dialogues felt confusing when I watched it the first time, but now I’ve realized how legendary and perfect they are! This anime is insanely amazing. Just imagine—I’m rewatching it and *still* not bored!

**Third**: This is where Mai-san’s real problems begin. Sakuta standing by her side, and the emergence of Sakuta’s past, both play a key role in the story! And this is where the true relationship between Mai-san and Sakuta begins.

Let’s not forget Makinohara’s first appearance was in this episode—though her name was mentioned in the previous one… I just *want* to write! If you see me writing a long comment, just know I’m at the height of my happiness—but I’m stopping because I want to watch the next episode! Let’s go to Episode 3. Meet you in the comments there!

Oh, and don’t forget to listen to the **ending theme** again! It appeared in this episode and it’s the best! Though I also love the opening, the ending has a special place in my heart.

It was probably intended but Mai's mom's inability to see her daughter looked especially like she was holding a grudge against her for her little act of rebellion years ago even if she just literally can't detect her presence. Really says a lot when something gets Sakuta of all people to show that much more emotional than normal.

Also, love how the dude actually went ahead and took the playground girl up on her offer to make things even lmao
