I really enjoy slice of life anime but not manga for some reason. Most are ugh. Any recs for good SOL manga will be appreciated.
I looked at your manga lists and it seems to me like you like the seinen manga. Hence, I'm suggesting Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. It's a really good slice-of-life and seinen. If you decide to check it out, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

@TheRegi going over your PTR I'll obviously say Hikaru no Go since it's like my favorite manga ever (duh), but I know it's on the long side of chapter count, so I'll say that I also thought Pluto, Planetes and Onanie Master Kurosawa were enjoyable reads for me and stuff I can always recommend.

Besides that, I thought Mirai Nikki and Deadman Wonderland were entertaining.

I thought about putting Hikaru no Go on my List for One of my Favorite Mangakas (Obata), but I already have some Manga with +20 Volumes, so I don't know, if I can read that much :D
Deadman Wonderland I already have on my list, but I'll take Mirai Nikki :) Thanks !

Sorry if this has been brought up before, but if I have been reading an ongoing manga like Detective Conan, do I have to read everything from the start again for it to count? (I've been reading the series for a very long time and I am up to date with the latest chapters)

Next question, how can an ongoing and seemingly never-ending managa count if it does not finish and continues on after 2016??

Thanx

Yes, you would have to re-read it all.

Basically, for the challenge as far as I can tell you just need to catch up with it (and stay caught up until you submit that you finished).

@Tendon_Unajuu Yes, it's just as Brand said. You'd have to re-read all of the chapters you previously read for any manga you use, ongoing or not, since the challenge only includes things read between January 1st and December 31st 2016.

As for on-going manga, as long as you are caught to the latest release chapter by the time you declare your challenge completed, then it's counted as you completing that item. Let me give you an example:

A participant signs up in February for the Medium challenge, then he or she reads 30 manga in a mixture one volume works and/or one shots, all completed and then 5 ongoing works. If the participant catches up to all 5 ongoing at the same time by July, he or she can declare their challenge completed without having to wait until December.

Heya guys. So, is Densha Otoko counted in

•Read a manga that has a live action (It has a movie and a TV series...)
•Read a manga with adults as the main cast (They were during their 20s)

I already put it in the "Read a manga with adults as the main cast" and I'm just checking it, but if I can put it into the live action one, then I will put it there. If it can't be put on both, can someone recommend me where I can put it? This is my manga reading challenge post. Thanks in advance!

Please Help!: Read a manga recommended to you by another Manga Reading Challenge participant. I like most subjects. I really like Yaoi, Harem, Ecchi or Romance and dislike Historical or just plain old Slice of life. I prefer Action or Fantasy but it's fine without it. Thanks.

I forgot to add this the first time but I would like something that is complete. Nothing ongoing. Thanks. ^_^

i've got a few questions before i submit my participation. i hope you understand that i didn't read the >350 replies :)
there are some questions where i'm already pretty sure about the answers but i want to know for sure^^

» Read a manga that is a collection of short stories
i guess that includes all the chapters/volumes the MAL entry lists, right? what if there is no translation for some chapters?
 » Read a one-shot
can this one-shot be part of a collection as well or does it need it's own entry?
» Read a manga by an author/artist you don't know
"you don't know" as in "i haven't read anything of him" or as in "i've never heard of this guy or his work before"?
» Read a manga that started serialization the year you joined MAL
i just have to catch up and keep reading new chapters until i finish the others challenges? is re-reading okay? (refers to all challenges that don't state anything else)
 » Read a manga published before 1990
does published only refer to the first chapter?
» Read a manga adapted from a video game, original anime or light novel
if i choose a mahouka manga do i need to read all of them since they are adapting different arcs from the LN or is one entry enough to finish this challenge?

thanks in advance :)

1. you gotta read the entire translated bit, but I there are plenty of completed and translated short story collections that this shouldn't be a problem

2. I don't think @tsuyokunaru would mind if you read a one shot that was published with some other story. But it has to actually be a one shot.

3. "have not read anything by them"

4. If you read anything ongoing- you must be up to date when you turn in your completetion form. It'd be better if you didn't re-read something because the point of the challenge is to read more things.

5. I think she came up with something like the whole thing has to be finished sometime around the end date. like something like that ran from 88-92 is cool. But I don't think something that ran from like 89-99 would qualify.

6. Only 1 part

@AudioTsunami Thanks for the help with the answers :D

@Simar It's pretty much as AudioTsunami said. If you want recommendations for completely translated short story collections, I'm sure people here would love to give you some. I also don't mind if you use a one shot that is included in a compilation of shorts, but you can't repeat the compilation from the short stories item.

The one that it says read a manga that started serialization the year you joined MAL, you can also use something that is already completed. It doesn't have to be ongoing. Re-reading is up to the participant, but we encourage you to read new things.

For your Mahouka question, well if the manga is just one MAL entry, it counts as one manga, so one part should work.

@TheRegi it's like AudioTsunami said. If it's possible, it should be something completely published before 1990, but if it started in like 87 and ended in 92, it could count.

Yesterday I checked one of the winners, and he had a Manga (Not sure which one) that started between 2000 and 2010 and ended 2015.
So I thought I'd take Übel Blatt, if it's like thah

Well, it ran for longer in the required timeline than it ran out of it, and it also went on a multiple year hiatus post-2010, so I think that's a weird outlier. It technically only was a running manga for ~2.5 years after the decade change.

thanks for the answers^^

concerning the one shot: i plan to read the elfen lied one shot which is listed in two entries: a short story collection of the mangaka and the main manga but since i've already read 3 chapters of the collection and cannot find all of the other chapters/one shots i can't use this collection for the challenge anyways...
btw do you have any recommendations concerning the collections? :)

concerning the re-reading: i don't plan to re-read a whole manga. i've started Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho some time ago but i only read 5 chapters (out of 175) so i plan to choose this manga for a challenge^^

another basic question about this challenge: am i only allowed to use manga i've started reading after submitting my participation or is it okay to use something i've started 2016?

As long as you re-read the first 5 chapters of YYH, that's fine.

You can use anything you've started in 2016, you also can re-read something that you have started prior to 2016, as long as you re-read it from the beginning.

You can try Benkei in New York, for a short stories collection.

@TheRegi the thing with Übel Blatt is that since it's still publishing, it could end in 2025 for all we know. I'd recommend that you try to use something already finished so you won't have to be wondering if it'll fit the years or not. The work doesn't need to span the whole decade either, just be between those two years.

benkei in new york looks fine since it's not like the manga i've read before^^ maybe i'll use it in another category tho (there is a perfect challenge in stats if it stays like this)

and it's good to know that i can use my older 2016 manga since i've already started some new manga.

No, shounen cannot be used as a genre. I think last year some people may have used shoujo and I wasn't very strict about it, but this year I will be. You may choose action, adventure or any other genre generally associated with the shounen demographics.

As for the banner, I have no idea haha, but! You can try leaving a comment in the profile of the person who donated that and asking them?

@keimaconquesta I'd say it doesn't count since the whole manga should revolve around one couple for that item.

As for where to put it, it seems you already completed the short story item, so I'd say it counts only for Read a manga with a target demographic that does not apply to you (since you have male listed in your profile and Haruyuki Bus has a shoujo target demographics) or for Read a manga with a score of or above 8.5 in MyAnimeList.

Feels level? Well, certainly it's not one of these over 9000 stuff, still it' exciting read, I couldn't put it down until I've read all of it.
A supernatural (or it was super power) somewhat dark manga with great art and charming main girl.
There is politics involved in the plot, and manga it's from 2012, so it looks like it was influenced by the events which happened in Japan 2011.
Naturally I can't be sure if this is to your liking or not.

For "Read a manga published between/before [insert year here]", do you mean manga that started publishing on/before those dates, i.e., a manga that starts in 1999 and finishes in 2003 counts for "between 1990 and 2000"?

Ideally it stays strictly between those 2 sets of years, but if it goes out of it by a couple of year (let's make 3 the top) then that can still count. Though not if it started in 99. That would count for 2000 to 2010 since there's more of the manga in that decade in than in the previous one (since you're use 99 to 2003 as an example).

Basically the manga doesn't have to span the decade, but it should be mostly inside of it to be considered a representation of manga from that era.
