Once, in 1865, while filing the popular "Proust Questionare", Laura Marx asked her father "what's your idea of happiness?", to which the man, today known as the father of modern socialism, responded that happiness is "to fight".

I kept thinking about this anecdote through the evening, after having re-read the last chapters of Kurosawa these last few days. The reason being that, if the question was asked to Kurosawa, I belive he'd respond with the same answer.

An unparalleled masterpiece in slice of life brutality.

A story about a man trying to be popular, getting respect, maybe get a family; all simple goals that never cross people's minds until it's far too late. The future is scary, being an adult is scary in many prospects; not achieving anything noteworthy, not having a family or loved ones to care about you, money always being an issue. The brutality seeps through every page of this lonely man's life, how he manages to deal with it with constant monologues about diverse elements of his life. Kurosawa is the good ending to all those characters that start ... going on a rampage to become something bigger, the incel sigma stereotype flipped upside down to reveal a wholesome story about dealing with the hardships in life. Profound and perfect with so much funny moments, so many awkward moments that land perfectly.

Story 10/10
This kind of story can become stale quickly, a formula of a situation being set up, the gag happening, the moment passing, we laugh, finish, set, repeat. That kind of gag story can work for loads of people, no disrespect to those, but this one becomes special when it actually evolves with each moment to moment. Characters undergo change, everything changes constantly, all in a natural lens of the main protagonist putting himself in a new situation that leads to the next, I can't believe how perfect everything flowed. Pacing wasn't an issue at all, just some conversations that dragged for a panel or two, nothing that ruins anything. The start, the ending, the lessons, the comedy, the dialogue, the monologues, everything deserves a 10/10, no question or doubt.

Characters 10/10
Every character managed to work perfectly towards the ending. A character isn't wasted in this story, everybody matters, every person Kurosawa meets and talks to becomes part of everything. Even right at the last arc, a bunch of new people got introduced; they had so much character, so many moments to develop them and I can't believe how well a story about a 40-year-old man can be so amazing at every drawing and dialogue bubble it gets. I loved every character from a writing standpoint, some are hateful, can't deny that, but everything still works to create a better story.

Art 10/10
There's art that delivers in diverse manga. Art that doesn't really stand out, or excel, but it works well and doesn't intrude. The art from this manga somehow makes it a hundred times better due to how expressive characters are. Tragedy, sadness, anger, laughter, every character has a distinct style, face, form, while keeping how expressive they are. I love every design, and sometimes we have banger double-page spreads with detailed art and fights. The juxtaposition and knowing how art and movement flows conveys enough to be amazing.

Overall 10/10
Not many people will believe that a manga with such a realistic synopsis can deliver such hype moments that make you stand up and scream. A story that can cause cringe to an unbearable degree, that can destroy you with emotion and teach you so much about life itself. A tale that holds a perfect ending with impactful parallels, soul crushing dialogue and thoughts from the simplest of people, everything while still being believable. I love this story, and hope you do too.

His story is a succession of painful moments as he fails at being respected, attracting women or making friends. And the rest is frustration as he keeps comparing himself to others or his idea a what a great man is.
