I just noticed something....Maria gave the charms to Battler and Jessica in episode 2 I think and sais they protect against Beatrice. Then Maria tells Battler that he wasn't killed because of the charm....yet Battler says he didn't have it with him, and we saw Jessica give it to someone else (I think one of the people that died). This hints that Maria knew who was going to get killed, or at the very least knew that neither Battler or Jessica wouldn't get killed. Although I guess this isn't that surprising given how strange Maria acts. She did say she was Beatrice's messanger. And why doens't Battler suspect Maria after this???

It´s simple

I think it's funny that Higurashi was on the TV.

And Maria's grin is awesome.

Some things I found of interest:

Now mind you, I hold no suspicions yet as to the whole whodunnit (or whatdunnit, for that matter) of this series thus far. I just think that if our culprit is being calculating (therefore is not necessarily doing this out of malice) about how he/she goes about this, then the way things were done had a blatant purpose to them.

I'm loving this series so far. It may be a completely unique and different story, but it has some of the flair that made Higurashi popular. I look forward to trying to figure this out before the end, if I can (I failed miserably w/ Higurashi).

Very nice relationship chart.

Let me write my humble thoughts so far.

Even if a supernatural witch Beatrice "exists" as Maria, Genji, Kanon, and Kumasawa says, I think that doesn't necessarily means that Beatrice is the culprit of murders.

And if one think about the epitaph, who knows the correct answer and who wants it to be solved?
It is said that Kinzo ordered the painting of Beatrice to be painted and engrave the epitaph. Does he know the true meaning of the epitaph and wishes somebody decode it? Or is it a challenge imposed by the witch Beatrice? Then why doesn't Kinzo himself decode it by himself to reunion with his love, Beatrice?

The epitaph reads like a procedure of certain ritual or something. Maybe all this murders are carried out by someone who believes that he himself decoded the epitaph and by following the rule his wishes will come true. Or maybe he is only misunderstanding it and obsessed with paranoia.

I think the most important point of the epitaph is that it says it can resurrect the dead and recover lost love. What does it mean? Are there any supernatural power which can resurrect the dead? Or is it only a metaphor of something? Or are those apparently dead people merely feigning death? Then for what end?

Want to hear any opinions. Lets discuss here.

So, I'm watching Ghost Hunt (another Studio Deen show, by the way), and in episode 16, they talk about a curse called a Kodouku, which is performed by trapping a bunch of bugs or snakes, or whatever in a jar and waiting until they kill each other off. You take the one survivor and perform the curse by placing it in the house of the target. It posesses the house and brings in lots of wealth, but needs a human to be killed as an offering, or it eats and kills its owner. If they can't feed it, then they have to exchange all of their wealth and interest into gold and silver and throw it with the bug onto the road, thereby continuing the curse.

Sound familiar?
I think so too.
I wonder how much of this is the basis of Umineko. And if so, doesn't it sound like the only way for the murders to end is for the family to find and then give up the money?

The first part of Umineko is a generic trapped on an island and people mysteriously die mystery. It's very common. But it's just Umineko's prologue. The real story hasn't started yet.

Oh well, if you putting it that way, it seems more "logical" now. I really pity Maria's mother for having to take care of such an annoying & problematic child though, ahhh...if only I can have Persona 4's MC power to go through the screen to comfort her on my manly chest...;d

I really liked how they made the stakes, really well.

About the chessboard thing:

"Turn over the chessboard" means to look through the eyes of your oponent and predict his next move and the reaction of your turn.

In this case it means to look from the perpective of the killer.
Why does the Person act like "Beatrice" what is to gain and so on.

But what is if the culprint isn't human?
Will the game logic still work?

You totally had to pull that straight from the game. Which is why

Things are going along nicely and well. They made a bit too... suspicious of the servants during the kitchen scene.

And HELL YES. 問い詰め, Battler's pre-awesome theme. Made it a bit too quiet, but all is well.

But Studio Deen doesn't make Umineko, they didn't come up with the plot or anything.

I know, I'm just saying that Deen produced another horror type show outside of the 07th expansion stuff, and in the case of Ghost Hunt they don't do the whole bulgy eyes; though they do do a whole lot of the other stuff associated with their style.

The pacing for this episode was a lot better than the first two. Although I can understand why they wanted to get all the character introductions out of the way and get right into the meat of things. Hopefully this will be the pacing they use for the rest of the series and try not to skip over important character details in future episodes.

I do think they are going a bit over the top with Maria's facial expressions but

@ScooterT: Same atmosphere. No direct plot relation though.

~~

And I have a question. Battler vehemently refuses to believe in Beatrice and the supernatural. But Maria got a letter and an umbrella from Beatrice. Does Battler think Maria is lying, or too stupid to recognize one of her own family members? It just annoys me that he is ignoring obvious evidence of Beatrice's existence.

The logic is that someone (the culprit) that looked like the witch Beatrice could have dressed up like her and tricked Maria. Or that one of the family members tricked her. It is never really stated in the anime, but Maria is extremely naive and gullible. The family believes that someone could have tricked her fairly easily. There is also no proof that Beatrice wrote that letter at all, anyone could have.

Battler doesn't deny the existence of Beatrice or a 19th person. He denies that that 19th person, Beatrice, is a witch. Which, according to how Battler thinks and, in fact, something he was born with can. not. exist. period.

Thank goodness I started playing the VN about a week ago and already completed the first episode. Otherwise I think I'd have been too scared to watch it, especially when they found the magic circle on Eva and Hideyoshi's door.

Eva sticking the receipt in the door still seems as random as ever.

What does the episode's title (Dubious Move) refer to?

I don't know why people are comparing Higurashi to Umineko.

The title, maybe? They both end in "no Naku Koro ni" and are part of the "When They Cry" series.

Also, I heard from my friend who's read the VNs (I'd love to, but I forgot to save after going through the opening exposition in Episode 1, and I'm not clicking through that shit again), that the story actually connects to Higurashi later on and explains things that were left unexplained in that series.

I'd prefer no one spoil it for me, if that's the case. This is the first thing I've watched in a while where I haven't been spoiled.

I am really getting into this anime, unlike practically all of you lol I have not had any previous knowledge of this series. So going into it blindly I'm really impressed, I'm also not one for blood but I like the mysterious aspect of it and Maria kicks ass!! I feel like she could be a little mentally unstable, just a little... lol but for some reason I have a feeling it works with the anime maybe even has a connection to the mystery?? just my guess though since I have no idea >.<

It is SOO tempting to click on "Spoiler" almost every post just to get some more ideas!
I'm looking forward to Kanon I did hear he might be an interesting character... >.> maybe :)

Whoa, whoa now two of the Ushiromiya member dies? The suspicion I had with that girl with the one winged eagle disappeared since she is already dead. I thought at first that she was the culprit, but after she died, it left me confused.

WHO'S THE CULPRIT? It can't be Maria, or can it? Hmm, also why does Maria's face turns like that? Is she really one of the bad guys? Are the servants the one who's behind this? Zomg, what a mystery.

Also, Maria was watching Higurashi on her t.v, lool. Epic win right there.
