This looks pretty good so far. It has an interesting premise with many possibilities for plot development. What really happens when the androids’ software expires? Do they really go crazy or is there some secret that the corporation that makes them does not want revealed. It will get more interesting once they encounter cases of androids who do not want to be flashed (which is tantamount to death in this case) and their owners who do not want to let go of them.

There was also some nice comedy particularly with Isla and her hijinks. I almost died of laughter when she jumped from the balcony. Overall she is a pretty cute and funny character.

The last farewell scene with the grandmother and the little girl android was pretty emotional.

The only negative aspect of this show is the so prevalent in contemporary anime pushy/abusive girl and timid/submissive guy dynamic. I’m not a big fan of the orange-haired tsundere and the red-haired bitchy field ops leader’s characters. I found them meaner than necessary. In contrast, both the boss and the protagonist were too weak-willed to my tastes. Is it too much to ask to actually stand up to an overbearing girl and tell her to lay off rather than just cower in fear?

Also, the protagonist was pretty much useless in the whole episode. All he did was getting yelled by girls the whole time and wondering what is going on. I was hoping he would come up with some solution with the problem of the day but it did not happen. At least at the end of the episode he acknowledged that he did not do anything, which means the show itself also acknowledges it and conveys that this is not really normal/expected and will hopefully get fixed in the episodes to come.

Overall this is a minor complaint for an otherwise nice and enjoyable first episode, but I just see the violent girl/timid guy routine so much in anime nowadays that it’s an instant turn-off to me.

The world and characters are interesting enough but the retrievals are trying too hard to make the audeince feel sad.

Are you serious?
To me it's actually the opposite. I mean you lived almost ten years with someone you consider family, you have ton of memories with him/her and love him/her like you'd love any of your other family member.
If anything I think that they part far too easily considering the situation so I don't see how those retrieval are trying too hard.

While it was nice and all, this episode produced some rather important questions (about the Giftias) which I dearly hope is answered by the end of the season and while there were some fun moments (Isla failing at jumping and then failing with her tea bribes), the flow between serious moments and the comedic moments (Nina's revival to Isla needing to pee) are very weakly executed. That being said, this probably has the best OST from what I've heard so far this season.

First ten minutes - explaining the androids and their expected lifespan. In that moment I immediately said: "Oh, I see where this is going.. Right to the feels, I guarantee"
I'll probably be right since Isla is considered a "veteran" *sigh* Feels connect to Fate Saturdays I guess...

Eh... So they can make robots but they can't do something like back up their memories?

The main character, when talking to the old lady, said something about upgrading their operation system, keeping their body and what not but losing their memories, that's no different that upgrading hard drives on a computer, all you need to do is back up files. With the kind of technology they have, I'm amazed they can't do that if all it takes is a single button to 'terminate'.

Feels like the only reason was to induce sadness.

None the less, the ending scene did have feels, mostly because of the BGM. No tears though, not for characters that have less than half a episode of screen time.

Cautiously optimistic about this show.

I don't get how the concept of greed is so hard to understand for some people. (to the people asking 'Y DNT THEY JUST BACK UP THEIR MEMORIES!!!???')

Well, this may seem like a comedy and Isla sure has her funny quirks but there are already some heavy undertones running beneath this. Sort of bittersweet feelings this episode left in me.

Great anime, hope this escalates even further, it could be very emotional in the end. And I kinda like Isla.

Ok, now I want to rewatch Blade Runner.

This thing would be great if it turns out the humans are actually the machines, and the machines they are recovering are actually the humans. And they wipe the human memories to prevent they from rebelling.

One of my crazy theories is that SAI are making these Giftias for themselves, or the government, and the "9 year service time" is basically a lie just to get people to pay for their production. Once they're reclaimed they still have like 100 years in them and are put into some underground standing army.

This anime is beyond stupid. Androids that cry and need to use the bathroom but can't have software beyond 9 years? Why is the contract not signed beforehand? I mean this is full of so much fail.

I can't even. Have you thought that since the androids are so advanced that it's hard to keep them running at a mentally stable condition for so long? I mean you want a brick that can listen for hundred years, or a fine piece of machinery that can act, feel, and talk on it's own for ten. Also the contract probably is a confirmation that android was successfully recovered and it's personal info from the owner wiped rather than permission to take it.

Thinking.... it's a skill I guess, not everyone can do it.

So i went on a whime and watched plastic memories, Still kind of wary of it, i love the idea of its premise in how there are these robots who grow to be human only to ive such a short lifespan leaving them with a looming thought of their mortality their whole life as well as how the families who own and attatch themselves to them have to prepare to say goodbye, and generally i found the show did a good job so far on portraying this, i just see a few possible chances for this show to go into a less than stellar direction, the tsundere chick was kind of annoying and i had a niggling feeling like she might be some unnecessary love interest which hopefully they avoid, i worry the show might be a bit too predictable with where its going in its heroine's condition, and the real big one i think the show needs a better balance of comedy and drama cause there was simply no reason for that comedic ending after such a serious scene as it completely ruined the tone

Now i like the episode, i just am very cautious of this one and would rather wait a few episodes before assigning any praise.

Im a fan of android anime. but this is quite different from others.

and finally a show with 3D CGI that blends well with the backgrounds / doesnt stand out or make my face cringe. and i like the really colorful atmosphere.

the red hair girl reminds me of Revy (black lagoon)
and the orange hair girl reminds me of a highschool class president. (forget what series im thinking of)

edit: aha it IS Revy.

Ask yourself: "IF you could have an android, BUT it would have a lifespan, would you want one?"

Goodbyes are always sad unless you're emotionless. People see their grandparents and parents die all the time. It hasn't discouraged humans from reproducing. Many people have kids just because they want a family (of blood).

I can see multiple reasons for having androids with lifespans over having androids that are immortal. The most prominent reason being the closer an android resembles a human, the less likely humans would be afraid. To rephrase this; the android can be your child, your friend, your confident, your soldier, and so on, but it can never pull off a lasting rebellion! (because people always fear robot overlords?)

Why live if in the end you will part with people, suffer and end up dying yourself?

I think the moral of the story is that you should enjoy and make use of what little life you have. In the end whether you are a robot with a lifespan of 9 years or a human with a lifespan of 70 you will die. You will live through both happy and sad times and you should accept that at some point everything will be over for you.

3/5. Nice animation, though not excellent. Nice setting, looks well made so far. Characters seem okay, though a little stereotypical on some aspects. This first episode succeeded in rising my curiousity. But it totally failed with the excessive and tear-jerking drama. Too early and exaggerated, especially when in contrast with comic sketches.

When I first saw the cover, I feared it was just gonna be another shitty dick-bait anime but reading the synopsis got me interested. After finding out that its written by a reputed visual novel writer, I really got my hopes up. Episode 1 was decent, certainly shows potential.

One thing though, he said he fell in love with on first sight even though she's in the body of a five year old. Must be a Japan thing.

It's like when an SSD is overused and the files become unrecoverable, I'd imagine. http://techreport.com/review/27909/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-theyre-all-dead

Also, it's likely a binary hardware failure due to their "life span" of 81920 hours = 10*2^13, so their technology hasn't gone too far past ours.

After a certain amount of memory (in this case, probably literal memories) is collected, the machine can't store any more data and starts to wipe. It's curious why it's measured in hours though, because logically that makes no sense unless it's just an average. If it's not an average then they'd have programmed a kill switch to activate after that exact number of hours passed, but that'd be extremely lazy programming.

You can't just transfer the files, if the file is corrupt then it will transfer corrupt. The body stays clean though, as was shown when MC offered to insert a new "soul" in the girl after her current one had expired.

As for why they don't just transfer the data to another drive before the crash, I'm not sure. We have ways to check for errors in order to keep operating, and ways to recover files before it's too late. I'm guessing it's just capitalism, example being the Sony Timer fiasco. Or it's a bug that nobody has caught. Or the data just degrades naturally and there's no way to keep it from naturally degrading for whatever reason.

The better question is why the need for a recovery team. There has to be a very specific reason why they cannot just shut them down remotely, and it's likely some weak bullshit answer just to cover up plot holes.

You are assuming that they can be shut down. There are machines that can't be shutdown once they powerup (the most common example, the human body, which IS a machine). So if they can't stop writing information to their hard drive, you cannot make an exact copy, specially if they also have a delete opiton for memories like humans do.
