This is experience from when I ran my anime club. I ended up having about 2 meetings because they were all such outcasts of society. They were so stereotypical, they had the nasal voice, the weird humour and they weren't very pleasing to the eyes either. There was just myself and one guy who were normal (as mean as this sounds).
This isn't just my experience, my brother joined an anime club at his university ages ago and he ended quiting because the members were just so antisocial and took anime to such an extreme level.

Honestly, I'm not trying to discriminate, but I don't see myself as being even half as strange as some of the people who came to the club. I'm not at the top of the school hierarchy but I am friends with the people who are.

So what are the majority of people who watch anime like?
Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!

Yes.

I too am sometimes shocked by groups or fandoms playing into cliche's. Even if I share their interests I find myself embarrassed to be around certain groups because of the way they act or look. I know I shouldn't but why don't people take care in their appearance? just because you are a fan of anime, or warhammer or something doesn't mean you don't need to bathe and change your clothes now and again, or wash your hair!

Also this nerds and proud attitude is also embarrassing, why can't groups act normal why must they be so...awkwardly nerdy when out in public. Ive seen it because they think they are better than so called regular boring people they act superior and its really embarrassing.

At my school's anime club everyone is kinda normal we're just a group of people with a common interest. So no, I don't think anime fans are strange but occasionally there's that one person who takes everything too seriously and is over the top about it.

To be fair, I don't think "most" people who watch anime would join an anime club. So saying most are strange would be totally wrong. I personally wouldn't really want to. I enjoy watching it on my own whenever I feel like it. If I want to discuss things about anime, there is always this site and many others.

Maybe, a friend of mine that has a few self-proclaimed otaku friends is always telling me about how much she dislikes them (sometimes she says she only goes to their meetings for the food), anyway, I'm a manga fanboy anyway

I've never ran into that kind of people, tho, so I can't be certain

Exactly this. I don't understand how you can "like" to stink. You have time to watch anime, play video games, warhammer, ect. But you can't take 10 or so minutes to bathe? I saddly know people like this. They even have a reminder to shower and use underarm deotorant before coming to the anime con I go to ( and I'm sure others ) whoch is quite sad.

Though I'm sure not all anime fans are like that, I'm a bit of a clean freak myself lol.

Yes im not telling them that they are gross for been nerds im saying nerds don't need to be that stereotype. I used to be one but I developed shame and decided to start taking care of myself, sure now it takes me ages to get ready in a morning, moisturizers, concealer, getting my hair just right and so on but when I went back to a meeting a few months later I was literally overpowered by the stench of body oder and I had to sit there for 3 hours smelling it ugghh.

We had an Anime club in university which was full of people like that. I was surprised that people like this existed. Me and my friends who eventually joined the club are not your typical otaku. We like to go outside and play sports, go clubbing so we can hit on girls and get rejected. (Uni girls are not as "loose" as they are portrayed on t.v and the internet)

They looked at us like we were the weirdos but we helped them to come out of their shells by inviting them to go drinking with us, trying to pick up chicks and when I say try, I mean TRY!... You guys should do what we did and encourage them to venture outside their bedrooms. It will help them integrate into society a whole lot easier.

My anime club in college is... not entirely bad.

There are some... normal people... (me....)

That's right I totally forgot about the anime fags that hang out at this burger joint by my College.

I go in there to order some club sandwiches (best ever) and those guys WEEB.

I mean, they seriously WEEB the fuck out.

Pokemon, Dungeons and Dragons, Yu Gi Oh, BlazBlue, Naruto, and shit like that.

I don't talk to them... well, except when I have to kick ass at Blazblue. That's my motherfucking game! >:0

In my last year of high school, a few seniors started the Otaku Club (no need to finish the story at this point). I didn't know what it meant back then but people said it was an anime/Japan club so I thought why not? At the introduction meeting, there were around 70 or 80 people, which is three times the normal club member size.

First thing I see when I walk in is 90% of the room is covered in black clothing, with like 20 people with anime color hair or some accessory that screams extremist. Most of the conversations in the room were filled with broken and disgruntled Japanese phrases like "omg that is so kawaii uguu!" or "Konichiwa minna-san ^_^ welcome to the kawiiest club in town!" The president/founder was in a goth loli cosplay. She was by no means a loli, nor was she "kawaii uguu!"

Anyway I guess what I'm trying to get at is it's up to you, the reader, to decide this path for yourself. I ask that you not be afraid, because no matter which choice you make, it's the right one.

People who watch anime beyond Shingeki no kyojin and apart from that don't really care for anime? No. People who do watch anime on a regular base? Yes.

I go to these cosplay meetings in my region, and I've met some of the most obnoxious people ever there. From people randomly making uncomfortable and sexual comments, from people stealing my food, from people randomly hugging me.

I usually just go away from the group with a smaller group of people who were also getting annoyed with the others. I'm thinking of to just stop going to these cosplay meetings.

So many people quoting this -_- I started the club because our school used to have clubs and I was trying to start up the tradition again and anime was the only thing I know enough of.

What the club which my brother was in did was trial a bunch of animes and if you found it good, you would pick it up in your own time.

I'd never go out of my way to join any form of club revolving around anime, I can easily watch anime on my own and discuss it on forums like this with you fine people.

The majority of people though? I don't think they're ALL crazy extremists / otakus. I know plenty of people who lead normal lives and watch a fair amount of anime in their spare time.

There are weirdos who make normal anime fans stay in the closet about their hobby, lest they be associated with the weird ones.

I'm not particularly secretive about it myself, but I don't think I'd ever join an anime club.

The club at my school actually has a lot of normal people. Sure there are those strange members that just seem really awkward, but generally I don't hang out too much with them. I'm always happy to talk about anime, though, so if they approach me themselves then I won't ignore them.

Though, apparently I've seen the most anime out of everyone there so I'm not really surprised about how casual the club is.

I saw an anime club at my university, however, I couldn't really be bothered to join it. They all looked like stereotypical anime geeks, and most of them looked like guys who secretly watched hentai manga/anime in their rooms.

I really think it depends. I think those who incorporate their love of anime with their normal everyday life are usually just normal, however, of course there will always be those who are completely obsessed with anime, and make it their only life, but then again, their could be people who do that and appear normal, it's really hard to judge.

I for one am completely normal! XD

I just felt like I wrote the word normal a thousand times in that post

the people who join anime clubs are often weird social outcasts, thats one of the reasons why I never actually joined a club like this.
I wouldnt say that the majority of anime fans in general is weird.

In conclusion:
People in anime clubs: often
Rest: Probably not

I live in a small town, so I can't really comment all too accurately on this matter. However...

I'd personally say that it depends. I've met both very normal-ish people who are into anime and a few eccentric ones as well. None of them were obnoxious and stereotypical weaboos, although people were estranged of at least one of them.

Although I do find it a bit upsetting to discover that I'd be considered one of the strange people, at least according to the stuff said on some of the posts. Not necessarily to the same extent, but still.

No, I don't think most anime watchers fall into that stereotype, although I haven't met any offline. From my experience the majority of them *are* strange and eccentric, but in good ways. But then again, I haven't conducted a worldwide survey on it, so I'm no expert.

Maybe that problem is just a local thing, OP... right? Surely that's it.

I don't think so, at least in my experience I've never met any really stereotypical weeaboo types. I've met lots of people who watch a lot of anime and read lots of manga, but they've all seemed to have a normal personality. The university anime society that I go to seems pretty normalish, a few people who get more into it but they only mention their cosplay plans and meetups and other groups occasionally. I did used to be friends with someone kind of like that though when she was pretty new to anime, but she quickly matured out of her weeaboo phase when she realised how weird it was to use random Japanese words in her sentences and get really excitable over little otaku culture things.
The people i've met at conventions also seemed pretty normal people apart from one or two eccentrics, with every fandom I think they'll always be a few people who are obnoxious and take it too far.

They can be, but watching anime does not inherently make someone strange in my opinion. It's a combination of other factors and experiences that shape them that way too. Then again, what's weird depends entirely on the person who is looking. In my opinion, most people who enjoy anime are not weird.
