One of the best anime episodes I have ever seen. Flawless.

Definitely among the top shounen fights of all time. Fast paced, amazing animation, very good metaphors and dialogue, great twist at the end. There is literally nothing I can complain about.

I applaud you, Madhouse. Well done. You brought a tear to my eye.
Just sit back, and let your tears do the talking as I save you.

From what I gather from the comments, that Netero gave out hints of military weapons and such...
So the reason the bomb was implanted into his body was all for military experimenting purposes. It could also mean that, even the chairman of the Hunter Association turns out to be a military puppet. And how such a potent weapon came into production is still kind unclear, since the military stood no chance against the Chimera ants during the early fights.
If the anime is going to point toward hunter association vs military/governmental conspiracy, that would be a huge twist.

Does anyone know which chapter the anime has reached? I read the manga's not serializing at the moment, so I'm interested in how many episodes we've got left. I hope the arc will get finished, at least.

What is Deux Ex Machina??? Mirai Nikki Reference?? or the manga with that name?

''Deus ex machina (pronounced [ˈdeus eks ˈmaː.kʰi.na], /ˈdeɪ.əs ɛks ˈmɑːkiːnə/ or /ˈdiːəs ɛks ˈmækɨnə/[1]; from Latin, meaning "god from the machine"; plural: dei ex machina) is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly resolved by the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability or object. Depending on how it is done, it can be intended to move the story forward when the writer has "painted themself into a corner" and sees no other way out, to surprise the audience, to bring the tale to a happy ending, or as a comedic device.''

Brilliant episode and I understand the asspull gesture for the arc but the way they wrap the bow and tie for this arc is spectacular and heart-wrenching too.

Man, Miniature Rose is one scary bomb. I can't wait to see the faces of Pouf and Youpi when they see their King.

The only part I was disappointed in was the translation of Netero's final speech

in the manga it was more like

'Ant King, you have no idea. There is no limit to the kind of evil humans posses'

Haha, this was awesome. Now I know why Knuckle and the other Hunters seemed so confident after losing to Youpi. Thinking about it, why would they not have some sort of counter measure? I mean, Netero went into the fight knowing there was no way in hell he would win. It only makes sense he would have an ace in the hole if you will. Also, this must have been another reason why he took the fight to such an out of the way area.

I don't want to think this actually killed Meruem, but the narrator describing it as a "suprisingly lethal" explosion doesn't give me much hope. I hope he lives long enough to see Komugi one more time....

Netero was just fucking badass here, btw.

Well that's just too broad and not specific. Which means Togashi could have used anything else and you wouldn't have noticed a difference or wondered if he changed what he wanted to do from the beginning. Hence why this is a foreshadowing for Netero's sacrifice whatever that would have turned, and not the rose.

It isn’t very broad. Although there are possibilities to choose from they are definitely limited. At the moment, I can only think of 4 possibilities that fit the line and two of them are really vague. The rose fits and this arc has been very consistent thematically. I don’t think the foreshadowing was made flexible because Togashi was “playing safe”, I think it’s because he didn’t want to be too obvious.

Yeah but how does that imply that he had a plan? someone will be sacrificed doesn't it was part of a intended plan.

Because Netero just didn't say "someone might be sacrificed" he said "someone might have to be sacrificed in order to complete the mission". He was cooking up a contingency plan in the case that the situation became desperate. If Netero was thinking about the possibility of someone dying during the mission he would have used different words and I don’t think entertaining such an obvious thought is enough to warrant thinking pose. xD

If Netero said the "someone might be sacrificed” at the end of episode 88 without having any plan in mind, it would sound pretty weird. In this case, it would be more correct if the word “killed” was used instead of "sacrifice".

It setups for many possibilities without specifically hinting for a specific conclusion that only it fits.

As I said in my previous posts, there aren’t a lot of possibilities. Although the foreshadowing doesn't scream "bomb" it's far from vague with only few possibilities fitting the line. Besides using a nen attack and a bomb, there aren't lot of ways the death of someone on the invasion team could bring about the death of the King. Back at NGL there were more possibilities (still limited nevertheless) but I only say this because the line could have also referred to a complex plan that involved a person sacrificing himself in order to kill the King, and seasoned writer like Togashi might have been able to come up with one. Besides the two possibilities I mentioned earlier (nen attack and bomb), Netero's line could have also referred to an elaborate plan that involved using one person as a decoy or a sacrificial lamb but personally, I can't think of anything.

What is the true meaning behind that asspull?

It shows that the show is realistic enough to acknowledge the inferiority of a certain side, that they don't use asspulls like power surges or sayian modes to wriggle out of it, but by using things alternative to Nen, which already exist in the world.

But it's an asspull. Doesn't make much of a difference if it's a power surge or something that exists in this world, it only adds to one theme.

Don't worry the power surge kind of asspull is near.

It isn't actually like that, there is a deeper meaning. I'd like to explain it, but unfortunately I'm not that good with english.
Also, to explain it properly I'd have to do spoilers and I bet Tsudecimo would still say that's an asspull, so I won't waste my time.

Actually I already know the meaning behind it or rather the theme behind it. The meaning however has literally zero relation to whether or not it's an asspull.

Ok.
Still, bringing up unrelated series to the discussion is not much better. Comparisions are meningless because what other series does or stop doing doesn't has any effect in this one.

I understand that you want to prove your point, but lets just keep the arguments in HxH and lets avoid making any more flame wars.

I quote -
"These days, deus ex machina has the negative connotation of an utterly improbable, illogical or baseless plot twist that drastically alters the situation, as if the "deus ex machina" came down to give fate that little push."

It's not really a dues ex machina because netero knew he would lose all the way back when Colt measured his strenght and he went to make preparations.

Ummm, I dont quite understand it, it is same as asspull?

Either way, in this chapter, i give this...
http://puu.sh/8aetE.jpg

A deus ex machina, as my professor explained it earlier in this semester, is a point in which an author writes themselves into a corner with no other foreseeable solution and therefore has to write themselves out of said hole with stuff that doesn't really make sense. So like, if there was a guy fighting a dragon in a sealed off cave and his only weapon is destroyed, looking like all hope is lost yet there just so happens to be an even stronger weapon conveniently just chilling in the cave so that the hero has a means to defeat the dragon and continue the story. That's the best example that I could come up with to explain his definition of the term.

OOOHhhh thank you for your explanation and the example, i get now, your professor is great at teaching

10 pages of people proving that it's not an asspull and you ignoring them for said bashing comments, because that's what seems you're really after.

Also, it's hard not to bring up comparisons when it seems SO peculiar the one thing you loathe so much is in your favorite show 100 times over with more clear evidence. So, you still owe an actual explanation as to why it's an asspull.

Your only claim is that it was not foreshadowed, yet it was, not sure if you just don't want to think it was foreshadowed or for some other reasons...

Repeating the same refuted reason is not "10 pages worth of explanation", still twisting the words.

The chairman himself has taken everything into consideration and came to a conclusive estimate!
The necessary preparation time to defeat the king with certainty, and the number of casualties during that time... will be 5 millions minimum.

So is this when they know about the rose bomb, about the possibilities that it could go off and kill all of them, along with 5 millions persons outside the palace?

Miniature Rose is a very powerful technique only possible by Creed and Limitation but in expense of the nen user's life, that's the restriction.
