The best thing about them is that they are direct to DVD movies so they are uncensored. Batman TAS even though it was dark for a cartoon couldn't be too dark in terms of content because its main target audience was children.DrGeroCreation said: I'm a fan of 90's Batman but I would have to say Batman Year 1 and Batman Dark Knight returns are on the same level or even better than the 90's Batman. 90's Batman is definitely better than Batman the Brave and the Bold (although I really liked Brave and the Bold) and the new CGI Batman cartoon. Really? Since I don't have TV in my room, I may have missed a few of the newer shows that have cropped up. Brave & the Bold was alright, but I decided not to watch anything new after giving that a shot. My intrigue will get the better of me though, so perhaps I will see how they are compared to the 90's lineup. |

My favorite is the animated Spawn series that ran on HBO in the late 90s. Got canceled, was supposed to get picked up again, and now I don't know what's happening with it. I really liked it, because it told the story in a similar, yet different manner from the comics. Check it out if you're in the mood for something darker. It was animated by Madhouse, too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NjhkwpFBbo |

@Cinerary I remember watching that as a teen, Spawn is really badass. Just saw the trailer for Justice League War http://youtu.be/q3F9ASSsHUk Looks good especially Wonder Woman's and Superman's character designs. Darkseid however looks and sounds terrible. Steve Blum is great as Spike from Cowboy Bebop and Shishio from Rurouni Kenshin but his voice doesn't fit Darkseid AT ALL . |

After this thread I've caught up so hard on DC stuff, Young Justice has definitely been my favorite out of a lot of the JL stuff I've seen, besides Mask of the Phantasm and Flashpoint. Watching so much Batman consecutively, no one else should be allowed to play the Joker besides Mark Hamill :/ |

I think instead of having a fourth season there should of been a Justice League of the future spin off with Batman Beyond in it. There were 2 episodes actually of Batman Beyond where a future Justice League exists made up of Superman, Aqua girl (Aqua man's daughter), Warhawk (Green Lantern's and Hawk girl's son) and a guy who can shrink and enlarge himself like Antman.DrGeroCreation said: Aylaine said: You would definitely like and be impressed by Batman Year 1 and Batman Dark Knight Returns if you liked Batman TAS (90's Batman). In my opinion I think in general DC focuses more on their animated movies than Marvel does theirs thus DC's animated movies are of a higher quality in terms of artstyle and plot than Marvel's animated movies. Marvel to me seems more focused on its live action movie franchise. When it comes to Marvel's animated series for me X men Evolution, Wolverine and the X men, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes , 90's Spiderman, Spiderman Unlimited are the best. 90' X men to me didn't stand the test of time.DC, IMO, has much better animation quality than Marvel. Has anyone seen the new Justice League: War film? That one is awesome! Marvel's best animated series would either be X-Men (90s) or Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. ataxia_ said: I agree 100% his voice is just perfect for the Joker. Watching Looney Toons on Nickelodeon when i was younger made me an animation lover for life. Looney Tunes is still my all time favorite. The X-Men animated series that ran on FOX Kids in the 90's is, in my opinion, the best cartoon series to air on tv. The 1st Season of Spawn that aired on HBO was amazing. Johnny Bravo was my introduction to Cartoon Network. Cartoon Network was great with shows like Bravo, Dex's Lab, Cow & Chicken, etc. There seems to be a general consensus that Cartoon Network sucks these days, which i agree with. i have Adventure Time season 1 but haven't watched yet, i've heard it's a good show, otherwise i don't watch any of the current shows on CN, Fox, etc. Here's my collection... MyCartoonList *Looney Tunes (Golden Collection 1,3,4)(Spotlight Collection 2,5,6) *Tom and Jerry (Spotlight Collection 1) *Ren & Stimpy (Season 1 & 2) *X-Men (Marvel Comic Collection) (Volumes 1-5) *Spawn (Volumes 1-3) *HellBoy Animated (Volumes 1 & 2) *Transformers (Season 1) *PowerPuff Girls (Seasons 1-6 + Movie) *Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends (Season 1) *Dexter's Laboratory (CN Kid Favorites Disc 1 Season 1) *Johnny Bravo (Season 1) *Beavis and Butthead (Volume 2) *Adventure Time (Season 1) *Garfield and Friends (Volume 1) *Inspector Gadget (Complete Series) *Courage the Cowardly Dog (CN Kid Favorites Disc 1 Season 1) *Ed, Edd, and Eddy (CN Kid Favorites Disc 2 Season 1) *Sonic the Hedgehog (Complete Series) *Johnny Test (Season 1 & 2) |

Watched the mini series Over the Garden Wall a while ago. I really liked it and hope that it becomes a full series later on because imo it has a lot of potential. The art , music (especially the music) allowed it to have a really great atmosphere and some episodes actually felt like old Merry Melodies shorts if they were directed by Tim Burton. To me it's similar to Courage the Cowardly Dog in that even though it's target demographic is kids it sneaks in some dark and scary stuff that you wouldn't find in other cartoons for the same demographic. |

I've loved animation of all types since my preschool days. As a baby of the 80s, both Don Bluth and Disney were a huge part of my childhood and they were solely responsible for my interest in art because they inspired me SO much. (Don Bluth used to work for Disney but after Walt died, he decided to open his own studio, claiming that Disney movies "lost their magic" and took a few animators with him who felt the same.) Bluth created some of the BEST animated movies during the 80s including The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and All Dogs Go To Heaven (<---my personal fave). His last hit film was Anastasia in the late 90s. If you saw a "kid's movie" that shocked or scared you as a child before the year 2000, Mr. Bluth was likely responsible for it because he loved to make things deliciously dark and ugly. But he also could make beautiful scenes and I feel that the dark bits only empathized the beauty and made it stand out. His films enchanted me every time I watched them and even when parts terrified me, it didn't stop me from wearing out the tapes! While Mr. Bluth created my strongest desire to draw and imitate his characters, Disney had no smaller part in taking my attention span. I was a crazy little kid who obsessed over every new movie that came out during the Disney "Dark Ages and Renaissance". While everyone here knows the classics, the movie I feel that "everyone forgot" was The Great Mouse Detective. Yeah, rodent Sherlock Holmes lol. It's very underrated. It has both a fantastic protagonist and villain (I MEAN VINCENT PRICE FOR GODDSAKES), a well-constructed story, and an EPIC climax. Definitely one of Disney's darker films. So....yeah, watch that one, ok.....I mean if you're interested. and watch all those Bluth movies I mentioned too. JUST the ones I mentioned. Now onto animated series.... During my teenage weeb phase, I once thought "ALL ANIME IS BETTER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE" but I mean....it was my teenage weeb phase, you know. I grew out of it. My favorite (currently running) cartoon right now is Star Vs The Forces of Evil. All I really had to do was watch the opening and I fell in love with it. Big surpise.....magical girl fan!! Lol But of course "American Magical Girl Show" has been done before.....several times. So why is Star better than say, The Powerpuff Girls or Winx Club? Winx Club comes off as a shallow attempt to attract every girl who liked Sailor Moon. That was it. I could be totally wrong and if there is a fan of the show in here, feel free to correct my ass. XD Now, I do think PPG is a good series (I also obsessed over that one as well) because its main characters are only five-year-olds, they are kind of hard for the audience older than that to relate to. What the older audience liked were the funny villains, action scenes, anime parodies, and witty dialogue. Which is EXACTLY what Star delivers....PLUS two really well-written and likable main characters. My other favorite cartoons are Invader Zim, Danny Phantom, Hey Arnold!, Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, and Dexter's Laboratory. Truthfully, I think anything created by Genndy Tartakovsky (sp) is gold. I love his direction and energy. By the way, if you caught any resemblance to his style in Hotel Transylvania, yes, he directed those movies. lol How about adult-oriented series...... I do like both South Park and Family Guy....but it's mostly for laughs (though I am amazed at how much SP has evolved since its first couple seasons). It's a very smart show....but not every single episode is a hit with me. Same goes for FG which as others have put it, is definitely suffering from "seasonal rot". McFarlane wants it to end and it's painfully obvious. Yet I just keep watching it. Lol. What's the most important to me for cartoons? Lol, same as anime: character. But I also like a little depth. I think it's GREAT when a cartoon offers an important message other than just laughs...and that message is subtle instead of blatant preaching. When kid shows are able to pull this off, you can color me very impressed. Of course, creativity is very important too...but I wouldn't say it's required to make a cartoon good. And yeah, anime has had a HEAVY influence on today's cartoons....you can tell merely by just looking at them. XD I prefer 2D very much over CGI (as a stylistic choice-don't think I dislike CG movies; quite the opposite!). But I really want 2D animated movies back. MY FAITH IS IN YOU, BLUTH. |

If anyone is interested in watching something funny and original try Axe Cop. It's based on a web comic by two brothers. One (age 28) draws and the other (age 5) writes. The a 5 year old comes up with all the stories is pretty cool. |

Tron: Uprising Avatar: The Last Airbender Invader Zim Adventure Time Samurai Jack Those four stuck out for me. I wish Uprising wasn't cancelled haphazordly like it was, such a shame really. The series had such a unique art style that suited the in game-world setting. Also Avatar was great, can't say the same for Korra though. ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ ) |
