When I was 6 I was I didn't have cable and I was board of PBS Kids so I flipped through various channels and found Kids WB and got into Pokemon but I didn't even know it was Japanese for years. Later when I was 14 somehow discovered Initial-D on YouTube, I didn't actually watch it until I was 16 or something though for some reason, I liked it but I didn't really feel compelled to watch any other series. When I was 17 I watched Death Note and I liked it so much that I started watching anime often off of Toonami and some online. About late summer 2015 (I was 19), I was watching anime almost everyday.

Technically, I was introduced to anime by Totoro as a four-year-old, and manga by Chi's Sweet Home in 2010. But as a hobby? Late last year I accidentally started watching Nanatsu no Taizai on Netflix. Haven't stopped watching anime since. And I started reading more manga than one-volume-a-year because of Citrus, which I really enjoyed until it lost any resemblance to a plot around chapter fifteen.

From anime club back in my middle school days, when we were still using old school PCs at library with ultra slow internet (which at the time was still considered a luxury even for public school), and it often took hours just to torrent few episodes so we had to take turns keeping the PCs on after school (otherwise the janitor will shut it down). We mainly watched shounen stuff like Kekkaishi, Flame of Recca, Bt'X, and Shaman King, occasionally some ecchi like Urusei Yatsura, and calming ones like Aria. Our club members consisted of super nerds neither into studying or sport - basically bunch of losers watching cartoons at school. Three years later (around 2008), when internet became much cheaper and more available, a friend of mine introduced me to anime forums and then here i am now.

Read a couple of chapters of One Piece at a neighbor's house by accident, and got hooked. But even before that I'd seen quite a lot of "cartoons" that turned out to be anime like DBZ, Jungle Book and Bleach (-_-) I'm still in the periphery of anime though. It'll take time for me to get to the middle of the giant beast known as anime.

I didn't know at the time (I was like 5), but my all-time favourite kids cartoon was anime all along: The Moomins. Growing up I'd see shows like Magic Knight Rayearth, DBZ and Pokemans on TV and well, it was all downhill from there. Didn't really get into anime until after high school, though I'd be late for school all the time because there was Digimon or some crap on the morning cartoons. Usually it was Tuesday. I was never on time on Tuesdays. Fucking hate Tuesdays.

I used to watch a popular show or two once in a blue moon, but then I saw the first season of OreImo and Kaminomi by mere curiousity and realized that I was missing on a lot of genres within animation that I had never explored before. And then I started working night shift at my office, my co-worker was an avid anime fan and we had a lot of free time, so I had the time to watch anime and he kept recommending me shows. That simply finished sealing the deal and i was hooked.

I watched some anime when I was a kid, but what got me into anime was watching Card Captor Sakura on TV when I was in highschool. | I know anime since.. like 8 y.o., cause my brother used to watch it, but my very first anime was Dragon Ball, 2015 August. I watched it cause I thought that It's an anime that is a must watch for every single person... But my very first Anime that is ACTUALLY an Anime (for me, ACTUAL anime is smth like.. not as long as one piece, pokemon, naruto and etc.).. Was Death note, end of November/start of December 2015. I turned 16 November 26th, I was in a mental depression, not sickness, I was just sad every day, but I could easily cheer up... I barely have any friends, I barely go out.. Even when I go out, I just go out for a walk or exercise. I had a friend, who kept telling me I should start watching anime. Finally, I decided to give it a try and watch anime, I asked my brother, what anime should I start with, he suggested Death Note. I liked it, my brother kept suggesting me: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Cowboy Bebop, Ergo Proxy, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, Shingeki no Kyojin. Later my friend suggested Elfen Lied and White Album 2. I liked every single one of them, some made me cry... Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso and White Album 2 made me realise, what type of anime I like the most. But what's best, anime helped me escaping from depression (I was close to entering a state of depression, when it's needed to be cured, not simply make me happy). This is my kind of story |
