THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Okay, freaking ending episode. As I thought it is now a happy ending. But then, till the end their real name isn't revealed; and one last confirmation, the real monster is still there and it is Johann. To this long-epic series to have a big hole ending in the end is really just like any horror movie should be. I'm kinda disappointed that it didn't ended happily since there will be no sequels. But well, just that thought; I just want to know the real names of the twins. XD

Anyways, a good story overall. I'll give it a 9/10.

Personally I found the real answer to "who is the monster?" to be "no one". Not a single person was irredemptible, everyone had their saving graces - and I think it poignantly pointed towards Johan, in the end, giving up his massive play with Tenma. After all, everything he did, every single action until his planned final suicide, was to make Tenma confess that humans were in the end not worth saving, that everyone were disgusting creatures. When he was proven wrong - when he was told the real story, where even the ultimate symbol for human evil showed mercy on his sister, he realized his existence in itself was, well, pointless as he had built it on something that was not true.

I believe he wouldn't kill anymore after escaping the hospital. maybe kill himself, but I even doubt that.

Okay, you've made me enlightened. I'm so dumb I didn't catch that up. Since Johan is forgiven by his sister, then he would think that all that he did was nothing, right? And that Tenma is just doing his job and not because of mercy or something. So, there's nothing bad and good in Tenma's doing that Johan wants him to prove. XD Kinda confusing story. Hahahah!

Anyways, I still want to know their real name. ^^

You're welcome - although my interpretation is not "true", all interpretsations are :3

Personally I felt that it would be a horrible anticlimax to know their real name, especially Johans. But that might be just me.

I also liked the ending, even though I had heard previously from some people that they liked the series except for the ending. I didnt care about not knowing their real names, I think it would have sucked if we found out Johan and Ninas real names. Ep- 10/10 Series 10/10. I loved it.

Hahaha! I was really frightened in the scene in Johan's hospital.

Hmm, although I would like to know their real names. Really, I also thought that it would destroy the whole meaning of Monster if they really told us. So, it's okay I think. Haha! Still 9/10, because it's my taste but not satisfied. XD

I must say that this was a brilliant finale. Loved the hospital scene with Johan and Tenma, that was so freaky! =P
Overall, I really, really enjoyed this anime. Give it the obvious 10/10, and it's definitely going into my Top 10 :D

Hahah! Finally, you've catched up Kayro! XD

You're far away from me when I started watching ep33 (you're already ep62, I think), then I've marathoned it. Hahah! Even when the DVD is jacking up, arghh!

Yeah, most horrofic scene I've seen so far is that scene. My heart is really beating up fast when it focuses on Johan's eye. It really creaps me out! XD

It's suggested that in the end the monster was their mother, because of the simple fact that she couldn't choose between Johan or Nina to send to that school and at the time, she couldn't tell them apart. I believe this is what made Johan snap.

Regardless of theories and whatnot, it was a beautiful ending. Definitely one of the best series ever. And even though you really wanted Tenma to end it by killing Johan, it would've been out of his character. So I though it was done really well.

Who would've thought Roberto and Grimmer were childhood friends? Those two were epic!

Oh yes. Grimmer. His death deeply touched me - maybe because of its inevitability, maybe because of his beautiful farewell speech, or maybe because he was such a wonderful character. Most probably it's all of these.

Their mother, eh? From Johans viewpoint, that certainly was it, but from the series, I'm rather confident to say it had a very bright view of humanity. It said, basically, that all humans are at the very core good beings (I use good here in lack of a better, non-dualistic non-dichotomous word). Of course, it is a very nuanced picture of human nature it paints.

Man, I love it, love it a lot.

Yeah, it's an epic one that Grimmer and Roberto are best friends. Although Grimmer's true name hasn't been revealed, unlike Roberto; XD

I'm still impressed with Grimmer for taking those people out in the building, those 4 thugs. How did he do that?! Even though he's really injured. Is it just that he's scary when he's angry, that's it?! Hahah! Seems impossible, eh?! He has no gun, he just throw out those people out of the building.

^ They didn't really said it to each other. But as the viewers we know it. Try watching it again. ^^

I think it's on episode 73 and episode 74. When Grimmer said that the only thing that he remembered in the orphanage is that he had a bestfriend when he was a child there that likes (coffee) or something like that. Then when Roberto and Lounge fought in the hotel. Roberto said that he didn't know his name or anything, he just remebers that he likes (coffee) with his bestfriend when he was a child in the orphanage.

The finale was how it should be. At first I was irritated because I wanted a clear ending that would provide me with an answer to everything after such a long show. But after all, it's better to leave it questionable. That way the story never dies and it kind of makes a bigger impact, I think.
It's not an 'easy', clear ending but instead you just sit and go 'wait, what?!'. That's Monster for you :)

All right it's 4:30AM right now so I'll try to type up some thoughts before I go pass out (seriously). I started this show when it aired in 2004, but I got lazy and gave up, then a friend told me it (the manga) was good so I gave it another go but I got very lazy so I stopped. I decided to pick it up again a week or two ago (the anime that is) because I needed something suspenseful to watch, and boy was it suspenseful. :D But yeah, VERY glad I finished this after 4 years!

Onto my thoughts about the ending...I thought it was sort of sad how it ended, Johann's question to Tenma was really shocking, I thought Johann was about to kill again, but he didn't. Did he just run away, or what? I'm thinking he must have thought that his mother thought that Anna/Nina was actually Johann and handed her over to Popper so he thought he was 'unwanted' in the end and died? It's hard to tell I guess.

I was just as shocked as you guys when I found out fatass Roberto was Grimmer's friend, if he had his memories then we would know Grimmer's name as well...I mean I really wanted to know his real name! But in the end, I think the names of the twins weren't revealed because maybe the idea is not knowing the name, but the fact that you actually have a name.

10/10 for me, I really enjoyed it even though it was a bit boring in the middle (when nothing was happening). The plot was pretty thorough, it's probably hard to even try to make this anime shorter lol.

Okay sorry if none of this made sense, good night!

It was sad how the names were never revealed, but the whole episode was great until the last few minutes of the episode when it left a HUGE cliffhanger. What did Johan's question and flashback mean? What was the ultimate fate of Johan?

But overall, with the exception of the very end, this was one of the best anime I've ever watched. One of a kind I should say at most.

A great ending. I loved how they showed the characters redeeming themselves, with Eva going to work, Runge talking with his daughter, and Nina going back to school.

And of course, Johan continues to prove that he is the scariest thing out of everything, everywhere. Period. His whole essence just screams Anti-Christ. But even he had a redememptive ending - loved how his final scene was done, with the flashback to his mother's decision, and his question to Tenma... and how it's hard to tell if that was even real.

A great ending, and well worth of watching the entire show. I especially liked the scene in the hospital between Tenma and Johan. It was scary XD. And that scene where Nina is so glad she'll be able to see Tenma. I dont know why, it strange, but you can almost say I was happy for her. And happy the show ended the way it did. I just loved it.

So it's over, but I don't want it to end.. hangovers like that always leave me feeling so empty. Questions will come like what will Johan do? Where did he go?

Well.. actually, I think he was a human with a real devil or at least some kind of powerful demon inside him, which won't disappear until he just dies once and for all.
This wasn't a happy ending. That monster only continued its wandering on the earth.

After four long months (at least for me)I finally completed this anime even though I had finished its manga adaptation. Monster is extremely brilliant and poignant, it actually makes my heart ache. I was also disappointed that Mr. Grimmer died though. Such a shame - I was looking forward for an optimistic ending for him too.

Kudos for Dr. Tenma. I wonder if real benevolence actually exist in this world.
Hmm, I also wonder what path will Johan would take, but I guess it's up to the viewer's perspective...

As for Inspector Lunge, who became a professor at the end, I congratulate him for finally enlightening himself to the truth. (He was quite good when he fought that damned Roberto.)

Amazing anime indeed. It's the only anime/manga that I had the dedication to complete.
I'm looking forward to another Naoki Urasawa's next manga/anime.

The anime was awesome. I think its called "The Real Monster" just so that you really understand there isn't a real monster. Everyone can be understood by the circumstances surrounding their lives. Johan became all messed up because his mother seemed like she was trying to save one of them, and he didn't know who she was trying to save. So he didn't see every life as being equal. Nina was the one being tortured but she didnt become a monster because she was the only one that knew that Bonaparte told her not to become a monster. The fact that Tenma saved johans life in both cases with and without knowing Johan history and craziness, gave johan peace. That his life is actually worth saving, even though he thought his mother might have been trying to save Nina. In the end I think Tenma got more scared that Johan lived his life not knowing that every life is equal.

The point of not revealing the names is consistent with the show. The monster who never learned his name learned to accept himself as he was; the monster who became Johan did not. We know who these people are and what they're made of whether we have a name for them or not, and I am glad they did not reveal it to us. In fact, I thought the story book shouldn't have revealed Johan's name either.

All in all, I think it's one of the most satisfying endings I've seen (though nothing will ever beat Death Note in that respect), and the entire show is brilliant.

Just finished watching this series. I had been delaying this series for around a year or more due to it's length. After some struggling and pushing myself through the number of episodes and the rather boring middle section of this series, I finally made it through to the end.

Quite the perfect ending, although there are some things such as the tape recording that Johan dubbed over that I wished had more detail. I would have liked to hear the entire interview of Johan at Kinderheim 511. I would also have liked to see some of the childhood scenes between Roberto and Grimmer.

I love the way Johan's eyes look or how he frightens people when he appears from the shadows all of sudden, as well as the way he can talk his way into people's hearts. I'm going to search and look for more picture books like the ones in this series. I find the stories in them really intriguing.

I just don't know what to say about the scene where both the twins were holding their mother's hands. You could really feel the horror and desperation of the situation they were in.

This series is either a 9/10 or 10/10. Although there were quite a number of times when I kept on wishing this series was faster paced and more intense, I believe that it doesn't deserve any scores lower than a 9.

Wow.. What a story. Truly a one of a kind anime. I'm not sure if I liked the cliffhanger ending or not. I'm curious about the fate of Johan - Since the window was open and the hospital bed empty, it makes me believe he killed himself in the end, but I'm not sure what to think.
I wanted to know the real names of Nina and Johan too...

I'm glad it was a happy ending. Tenma was cleared of all charges, Nina graduated from school, Runge got in touch with his daughter and became a professor at a police academy..
I'm really sad that Grimmer had to die though. He was my favorite character from Monster. I was shocked to find out that Roberto was his childhood friend from Kinderheim too.

I'm drawn between giving Monster an 8 and a 9 for the final score..
Even though I thought it was too long, slow and almost boring at times the story kept me hooked and interested enough to watch it to the end.
It had really good animation with a realistic and dark style, the sound and voice acting was good and there were many interesting characters.

Well I enjoyed that ending, and the series overall. While its a fact that most cliffhanger endings annoy me, this one didn't, and it felt alright with me. I like an ending that leaves some things for you to decide, and Monster did just that.

Overall, some minor things about the series bothered me, but nothing so horrible that it overcame the overall enjoyment. I cant honestly give it anything less than a 9/10.

When I first watched Monster 2 years ago I really liked it but now after 2 years and re-watching it I really LOVED it. The characters of the show are well defined and are so real that you can live with them. This is one of those rare anime that, apart from some very short moments, feels and stays realistic and that's a winning factor for the amazing thriller plot.
I loved how this anime analyzes human behavior and human nature without trying to pass judgment on every single character. In the end many of the characters stay gray. They are not either pure white nor pure black and that realistic approach makes them lovable and more importantly believable.

I really loved how this anime has an open ending. It suits the plot the best.

Finally finished it. It dragged in some bits but Wow! A great saga. First time I've seen a TRUE horror story. Especially loved the ending, except for those final 20 seconds where Johan presumably escapes from the hospital.

Seriously. That was awful. It would've been perfect if they had ended it with Tenma walking away, leaving the so-called devil to his sleep. But instead they tacked on that extra cheesy little bit, just like a question mark after the "the end" screen. Completely unnecessary. Kinda ruined it.

Still, an amazing series overall. 10/10.

This anime has made me lose so many hours of sleep! Especially the last 15 or so episodes have kept me awake till the wee hours of the morning until I could no longer see the screen due to blurry eyes. I am sad it's done though, it feels like a whole 6 months of my life has ended with it!

My theory on Johann dressing as a girl, was because he thought that they (he and anna/nina) were one and the same, they were one person and so he became Anna/Nina by dressing the same as her. That's why he took on her memories and her time at the Red Rose Mansion as his own. If they were the same person, then they both experienced it.

Well, I give it 9/10, cause I have never given anything a perfect 10... but it came pretty damn close! And now I need some much overdue sleep!
