I didn't knew it has a bad reputation. People that are not interested in anime won't even bother to understand what it is. The ones that look down on it don't really know much about the genre or judge everything from the 1-2 anime they've seen. About cosplayers, I don't think they are to blame. There are cosplayers for video-games or movies and people don't mind them, so why should the anime base be any different? |

Probably because most anime involves high schoolers, even the anime for adults. People see high schoolers and either think pedophilia or cartoon for kids, which strangely enough is usually true. |

I think it's a mix of several things actually. The most important is the fact that most of society seems to follow dumb rules and stereotypes of what is right and wrong, thus they come to people like us with completely ignorant statements like the "cartoon", "hentai" or "for kids" stuff. Also, we have to admit that a very important and big part of the anime-watching community is made up of socially-awkward people. I personally have no problems talking to people and stating clearly what my hobbies are but the vast majority of my geek friends have a lot of difficulties talking to people, especially when they're just meeting them so the non-geek part of society tends to associate Anime itself to "nerds", which is just another ignorant way of looking at things. Sadly, we usually don't get help from things like the TV industry that almost never airs the good stuff. So people don't have any normal means to watch anime other than the ways we do it (download, stream or buy online). This is most likely a social stigma the geek community (I include gaming in this) is going to suffer for several more years. So we have to just bear with it and keep supporting the things we like. |

Yeah but it takes more than that for someone to continue looking at anime beyond these endless series. Still, hatred for long-running, popular shonens are more of an inside thing that from outside. There is the odd-one out (like myself, went as far as saying "I'll never watch Naruto" to a friend of mine), but that is like 1 in every 1000 non-viewers. Also, normally when someone watches one anime and enjoys it, s/he'll start looking for more anime that is similar before deciding to broaden his/her anime. |

Most people outside of the anime community aren't even aware of moe, so I wouldn't give KyoAni so much credit. There's obviously a stigma that all anime is for kids, since the best known ones are things like dragonball. Also, anime fans are mental. |

Okay, I'll be honest (and I'm sure I might get berated for this statement). I honestly think anime fans, most specifically the fans that are given the name "otaku" give anime a bad name. I guess that's a little vague since "otaku" is generally speaking a subjective title to begin with, so let me give an example. An otaku that collects several figures, posters, has it/them all over their room/house, dresses up as their favorite characters and go to cons. The sort of fans that talk like their favorite characters (I'm looking at you, weeaboos) and use catch phrases that are common in anime but aren't commonly used. An example if you call something you think is cute "kawaii" and all you ever use is "kawaii". Yeah, those kinds of fans. I think those kinds of fans might turn a lot of people who are somewhat interested in anime away from becoming a fan. Generally speaking, I've seen a lot of normal people call those sort of fans, strange, demented, and you can pretty much throw in any generally insulting phrase here. I think there is another type of fan that doesn't help, and that's the obsessively closed-minded fan. Here's an example and it's oh-so-common on MAL. When someone says they have a favorite anime and say why it's their favorite anime. Then another fan comes along and says, it's shit, it's garbage, and this is why it's garbage and you can't convince them otherwise that it's nothing but a pure pile of shit. Then, they not only degrade the anime, but degrade the person for liking said anime, saying that that person has no taste in anime and has no business telling other people what are good and bad animes. Yeah, those sort of fans are a major turn-off for a lot of people who are semi-interested. At least, that's my experience. I remember one time I was having a conversation with someone and I was talking about anime. That person asked me, "are you an otaku?" I'm never quite sure how to answer that because I don't really collect dolls or cosplay, although anime is my favorite form of entertainment and I do enjoy talking about anime quite a bit. At the time, I think my response was, "I'm an anime fan, but not an otaku." |

Time has passed, and my perspective has changed I think non-anime watchers see anime in only 2 different ways "the anime for kids" (pokemon, dbz, yugioh) and "the anime for perverts" (most of the covers for mangas and animes that you find in stores show a lot of ecchi'ness/fanservice on both the front and back; even if it has nothing to do with sexual things..) They don't see it for what it really is, they don't see how many genres it truly has |

1. Stereotypes. Ok, this is probably the main one. "Anime is for kids" actually have a reason to be called like this on America or just outside Japan. Think about it, ask someone that isn't addicted towards anime and say if they know any of them. If they say yes, chances are that will be Naruto,DBZ or Pokemon. Surely, these animes are for teens, but nobody can deny the dark undertones (or overtones) with death. And even so, there are censorship, which unfortunately, is handled badly by some really known company: 4Kids. A lot of anime got screwed with it by them (while there some small changes that was actually good, and they were amazing back then before the change of the major workers there). With this thing, not only it messes with plot (Death is a plot device, after all) but it changes to be aimed AT KIDS. There are teens and there are kids, but they make teen programs fit for kids. Why? Not only that, but the lack of any investiment of anime to outside isn't good either. Good animes generally are japan-only because lack of investiment and the fact that is to risky to invest anyway, let alone the very fact that anyone that actually watch anime outside of japan watches it on the net, and does it subbed. 2.Moeshit I can't really explain to much about it, but like some previous posts said, it can get annoying at times. 3.Cultural clash perhaps? You know, Christianity or any other religion doesn't support most of the japan main-cultured animes very well. 4.It's hand-drawn, therefore it is childish Believe or not, I saw someone saying this with different words. They watch Disney Channel with that teen-only programs and yet they say that anime is childish. Oh well, sorry for any contradictions or errors, this is a rather quick post of mine. |

(I'm aware being cutesy with japanese slang irks the crap out of anime-watchers too, hehehehe) Or the fact that a lot of animes portray gods/godesses as reapers. Or on earth, and clueless of being a god(like haruhi) instead of being all mighty heroic fathers. A classmate of mine told me this is why he doesn't like anime, he's a hardcore christian and gets mad at anime going against his morals.. he even told me to stop watching it or I'l go to hell sorry if I was being a little biased.. As a teenager, I'd say the people around me who don't watch anime would describe it as being either childish, nerd-ish or perverted.. The reasons for this are simple IMO, some people watched shows like pokémon, digimon and yu-gi-oh as children, so they'd think it's only child-oriented. Others see only the little otaku/gamer groups that spend the breaks discussing anime and video games. And lastly there are those who have heard about hentai, and see it as being the only genre of anime. These are only preconceptions and are based pretty much on lack of knowledge, though most of these people don't really want to gain any knowledge on the subject |

Probably because when people think anime they think of what they saw as kids on cartoon network, like Pokemon, Naruto, Dragonball Z, etc and people think that's all anime had to offer. I thought this for the longest time until I randomly found Haruhi Suzumiya one day. And then there are the fans of anime who to have a tendency to nerd out over things, which gives off the impression that if you like anime you are just an odd social reject, so to avoid that happening they jump on the naive hate bandwagon and never try it for themselves. Because people are just that stupid. If you wanna screw yourself over and not watch some of the best shit the human race has to offer for that reason than so be it, but you will be forever labeled as a moron who can't think for himself in my book. |

natssuu said: Why do you think anime/manga(in general) has bad reputation among the people who don't watch it? I personally think it's because of moe characters which appears everywhere on the internet... I'd bet people who don't watch anime out of disinterest genuinely don't know what moe is. Frankly from what I observe, it's not so much that anime has a bad reputation as it is that rather people outside of the fandom are not interested in watching anime as part of their entertainment. And the reason for the disinterest is similar to the disinterest in American animation in general. There is still this stigma that animation no matter where, has an appeal limited to specific audiences, whether its kids, nerds, or otherwise. A big part of the problem of course is marketing and how it influences the shows being made, labeling a show and all its cliches for kids, preteen/teen boys (shonen), preteen/teen girls (shojo), adult males (seinen), adult females (josei), male otaku or fujoshi. But I think we as fans tend to contribute to that problem through we bring it to discussion. In any discussion, we boil down the appeal of anime so much in terms of genre, age/gender demographics or culture rather than in terms of the story and whether it can be compelling and meaningful to anyone, that we risk alienating audiences. |
