I'm in the middle of two books (because I got disappointed with one, but I will finish it... once school/work let me.) Those two books are Breaking Dawn and Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

Andrej Kurkovs The Death and the Penguin - the title had me already. About a lonely reporter/freelance writer in a pretty run-down Ukraine, bonding with a penguin and writing eulogies. And other stuff. Pretty simply written, but it has a depressed penguin named Mischa so all's well!

Murakami Harukis The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - Took me a sweet while to start on this considering Murakami's one of my favourite authors. As great as always - as a swedish reviewer put it, "the style is clear as glass, the prose even as a snowbed and the unfolding of events completely unpredictable." Capable translation, too.

And still going through Pynchons Gravitys Rainbow and The Crying of Lot 49. Both very nice.

Anyone care to recommend truly awful writers/books? I've found recently I only read stuff I like and find good, and would like to read bad stuff too.

Today I went to the biggest book shop in the country and (after going with 20 different books to the cashier and changing my mind) bought The Book of the Dogs. It's a cute and simple collection of dog stories and things about dogs and comes in a format that I haven't seen for years... It's like a religious catholic handbook, but only about dogs. xD

Thank goodness I had not many experiences like that, but I can name two international writers:
Stephanie Meyer (yes, I love Twilight and I love Edward, I hate the way the woman writes and can't understand how a former Lit student can make such horrid mistakes) and Kymythy R. Schultze (this one writes dietetic books for dogs xD)
I could name a couple more Portuguese authors, but those are most likely not available anywhere else (yay)

Then there are the "repetitive" authors (which are almost all the female Latin American authors), who tend to pick on the same issues or do it in a very similar way every book. But they are not necessarily bad.

ALSO! A badly written book is not necessarily an uninteresting book! The same way I recognize that there are fantastically written books that I just can't stand even though they are so well written.

I didn't realize that Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist was a book... hmm I'll read it after I see the movie, so the movie isn't ruined. :)

Heh, thanks! I've actually long planned to read Meyer exactly for this purpose - I'm quite prejudiced against that kind of magic-vampire-romanticism. Never heard of this Kymythy though. Canine dietics sounds... "interesting" as a subject. Will check them out.

Regarding badly written but interesting books, I agree (not so much on the reverse, because I can quite dig good language for good languages sake). Nearly all pulp ever written fits snugly into that and if there's something that's great to read it's pulp, though hard to find. It's a goldmine, I tells ya - W. E. Johns is probably the worst writer I'll ever count as a favourite, or even one of the worst writers I've read at all. Strongly recommended, by the way.

The diets lady is just plain incompetence and lack of writing talent. Not a sentence of what she says on the book is correct, it's quite a laugh if you actually studied a bit of the issue before. =p I could also name a couple more dog people, now that I think of it...

As for well written bad books, I've found quite some. I love to read for the sake of reading, but two of the three books I ever dropped were very well written. One was just too hard and I quit it to read when I was older (I'm older now, I may as well retrieve it xD) and the other I found the issue so stupid, but so immensely stupid that I could not read more.
I'll look for that W.E. Johns in my personal library and try him too. ^^

(also, the said book about dogs is just plainly cute and pretty. It gives me a smile every sentence.)

OH MAN, SQUEE~ ♥ I love that little guy xD

Also, I remember trying to read Nich & Norah and getting annoyed by the tone of the book - it was all "Look at us! We're unique and quirky teenagers! Let's see how many obscure/indie band names we can drop in the span of five pages! :D" So I never finished it - which is a shame.

The duo who wrote Nick & Norah wrote another book - Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List - which is hilarious and thoughtful and much better, imho, than the one that's being made into a movie. :3

Alright, list ahoy:
Book I'm Reading Because I Have To (exams are coming soon for me) is Regeneration by Pat Barker. It's alright, but I'm not too sure if I would read it if I wasn't studying it.

Book I'm Reading Because I Want To is History's Great Untold Stories by Joseph Cummins which I'm enjoying. Good pick up and put down read, as it's cut up nicely into small sections. Currently reading about Filipino rebels in the 1700's.

Book I've Just Finished is The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. It's good, it's short, it's intelligent.

Book I'll Be Reading Next is Well Done, Those Men by Barry Heard. I saw him give a speech and got my copy signed; very interesting man and I can't wait to start reading the book.

Now that you have read the book, what do you think of the movie? I believe the biggest difference is the way the main protagonist is portrayed.

I'm just surprised at how different the movie is. I see that they had the world as being quite accepting of robots in the movie whereas in the book they weren't really very popular. In the movie, only the protagonist had the distrust of robots. As per usual, I enjoyed the book a lot more than the film.

I'm reading "The Six sacred Stones", a damn good book. It's the sequel to "Seven Ancient Wonders" ("Seven deadly wonders" in the US), which is also good as hell.
And, really I have realised how many referneces it does have XD
I mean, the first book is about Captain Jack, who does have an automail, trying to find "one piece" of a Pyramid, and they keep repeting it all the time XD "We have to find One Piece!"
In the second book there is this dude with the automail trying to find the Philosopher's stone XD

Great book! Read it! By Matthew Reilly! Buy it in your store TODAY! :''3
