Say it ain't so..........great so now that's Speed Racer, DBZ, Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Cowboy Bebop. I'll take to the skies and bomb Hollywood like Deidara, if they pull a Naruto movie out of their ass! |

I actually loved Speed Racer (yeah, I'm a Wachowski fan), I've only seen clips of the old anime but it doesnt look like anything I can sit through. The film was just awesome good fun with a decent encouraging story for kids. DBZ looks so hilariously bad. Death Note was very bland and full of the worst acting I've seen in a long long time. Dont even get me started on GitS and Akira... ¬_¬ |

Bebop is one of few anime titles I could see Hollywood pulling off, mainly because it isn't distinctly japanese. Westerners can relate to the Bebop crew, a sort of jazzed up anime Firefly. The only real japanese elements I remember were a lot of the yakuza-esque stuff going on and hollywood should have no problem doing that. Fans will never be happy no matter what the hell happens, that's always a given. Even if the actual full series of bebop was shown in theatres uncut in japanese, fans would still find something to bitch about. The scary part is we really don't have much of a track record when it comes to hollywood anime adaptations despite all upcoming movies. It's like a big jack in the box - we have no idea what the hell is going to happen. My hopes are high but my expecations are low. I'll keep an open mind since I think this is a good choice for a hollywood adaptation (unlike DBZ and Akira). I'm just terrified Keaneu is going to be cast as Spike. |

There seems to have been some kind of agenda against the Wachowskis as usual, probably because they refuse to be interviewed by any media outlets. The whole 'its like having acid poured into your eyeballs' argument is so lame, the movie is just colourful, there's nothing incoherent about it at all. The only time where it feels like you're tripping is for a few minutes in the climax, and that's how it should be. Seriously guys, check it out. It tries to be different from regular blockbusters, using neat narrative tricks, the middle section is a bit slow, but the pace picks up again quickly and stays exciting all the way the end, and it literally looks like a live-action anime, the cinematography and direction is pure anime, its just brilliant. /end review. |

Just throwing these out there: Apparently, New Line Cinema has the rights for a Monster movie in '09. Also, Darkhorse says a US adaptation of Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service is in the works as well. |

I see a trend of Asian interest in US. First we gotten a bunch of Asian action films then Jhorror films released and american adapted now Anime is getting that same treatment. It really depends on the series and who is involved to know how good it'll be. I don't know how this will turn out until we get some more info. So for 1st reaction, don't screw it up I like this series. I did like a few movies he worked on so I have a bit of hope but I don't want Keanu Reeves as Spike, rather he can play some exclusive main character instead. |

I'm really having my doubts about this movie (and pretty much all of the planned adapted live-action anime movies). I just really hope that I'm proved wrong.... I wonder if they're going to use a bunch of blue screens in this movie, too, since it seems to be pretty popular these days. |

They pick the most accessible, lowest common denominator, or (pop) culturally recognisable works from Japan, and leave the stuff that doesnt tie in with their (ideological) agenda. Like why Disney turned down distributing Grave of the Firelies and Only Yesterday. It's why they're taking Asian movies and replacing Asians with caucasians, it's been annoying me for years, but what can you expect in a world with countries, everyone thinks arbitrary lines on a map means something. /end rant. |

This is more encouragement for me to watch Cowboy Bebop...My friends just slap loads of praise on it, so I might watch it now before this movie comes out. That way, if I enjoy the anime, I'll have a movie to check out too. |

now the true question, do they cast no names so not to make it so people go and see it because of the person cast, or do they get big stars for the roles to bring in the non-anime fans? |

Well... I don't know about this. I'm not too optimistic about it right now. I thought something like this would inevitably happen. I'd have to hear more about it before I say anything positive. Nothing he said inspired much faith about the quality but atleast it's better than the information we got on Akira and NGE. I just wonder what they're going to do about the plot. Cowboy Bebop was really as good as it was because things fell together very nicely. The episodic nature of the plot fit in with the sporadic, spontaneous and energetic characters. The fabulous music and sound track really gave the personality of everything Cowboy Bebop another dash of spice. I really doubt the movie will have that same type of cohesion. I just don't see the actors / plot / music really being on the same page like the anime was. |

Brian333 said: The fabulous music and sound track really gave the personality of everything Cowboy Bebop another dash of spice. There's a headache right there. Who's going to do the soundtrack? Are they just going to follow Kanno's lead or do something creative on their own? Will the film even bother with the jazz motif? Too many questions. Only an OCD-natured director like the one's I mentioned earlier in the thread could pull this off, a workmanlike director will give us a new level of mediocrity tinged with sadness and pain. |

Even if they do reproduce everything else in live action, without the trademark Yoko Kanno music, it just wouldn't feel right to me. They need to keep the music, or hire Kanno to write more.... Indeed. If they get The Seatbelts back together they can have my money, lots of it.If this movie doesn't have Kanno & The Seatbelts it isn't Bebop. Agree, 100%. The original music has got to be there, or at least the same jazzy sound. I'm with you guys on this. They should use the OST of Bebop, or hire Kanno back on. mr_utopia_man said: Spike has to have his cig... 'Else he wouldn't be Spike. And, this dude should know what he's gotten himself into. The American otaku regard Bebop as "sacred". You either do it in a way that we would praise, like, or you do not do it. Period.I cannot think of one live-action movie based on a remotely serious anime/manga that has turned out well. This concerns me. Bebop is sacred. Do not mess with it. We do not want to see any personal artistic interpretations of it. And they had better give Spike his cigarette. I just hope... |

Nah, I think Tarantino and anime would not work out well at all. It would end up like Afro Samurai or something. Note: Afro Samurai is crap. Tarantino and Bebop, an even worse mix. He's more about dialogue and slow-burning pace. We need a director who's good at mixing visceral action with comedy, who's quirky in the head, visually striking, knows how to pace his films, we need a screenwriter who isnt so loyal to the source material that he just splatters the whole thing onto the big screen without realising they're two different mediums, we need lots of things and I need to stop thinking about this so much because it's gonna come out crap anyway. If any of the directors I mentioned on the previous page turn up for the job I'll be there day 1, otherwise I'm gonna keep bashing this project until everyone joins in or it turns out non-crap and I can be like "I'm so glad I was wrong!" Also: people need to realise we're not gonna see all 26 episodes in the movie, so get over it. Personally I'd prefer an all new adventure, like the animated movie, than just bringing the anime to life. I'm so bored of origin tales now, just throw me into the action already damnit. |

I dont like Kill Bill. :P Jackie Brown is his peak. Reservoir Dogs was his peak. :P and on another note, the optimism surrounding this is astounding... are that many people expecting this to work out? And as for the sound track, I would rather they not just hire Kanno and give her control or use the old soundtrack. This is an issue with appropriateness. Kanno's work might or might not even be suitable for this work anymore depending on the director, the cast, the story, and the stage. Her work was really one of the defining factors of Cowboy Bebop but like I originally said, more than her music, it was the fact that everything just fit together very, very well. If they just layered Kanno's work over another story with another cast and another director's vision, then it'd be out of place if it doesn't have good cohesion with the other elements. I wouldn't mind a couple reworked homage pieces, though. |
