Just now finishing up with George R. R. Martin's A Clash of Kings, and so I'm about to start A Storm of Swords. Taking my time, only reading a chapter or two a day, since he's still writing them and all.

I'm waiting patiently, note the word patiently, for George R.R. Martin's fifth book, A Dance with Dragons. I hate the 3:1 odds of him passing away before the series is finished. :(

I hear ya. After Robert Jordan's passing away before completing The Wheel of Time, I've been a bit paranoid (glad I never started reading those). But as far as I know, there are no health issues with Martin (please tell me there aren't), although I suppose he is getting on in age.

At least he hasn't pulled a David Gerrold. It's been fifteen years since the release of the fourth Chtorr book. I loved the first one, but have hesitated reading any more for fear that he'll never finish them. Gah! =/

Got done with Guns, Germs and Steel and Meat : A Love Story by Jared Diamond and Susan Bourette respectively. Good reads. GGG was a good one to think about and Meat was a fun read.

I pt 1434 by Gavin Menzies on hold. I wanna read the first book first before that one.

I'm currently on Brian Greene's The Fabric of the Cosmos. I'm having fun with it. Lastly, I might start The Twelve Kingdoms : Sea of Shadow along with it.

The strange thing is, prior to this, I didn't read that much compared to now. Its a good thing I suppose.

@shiTsu

I can't bring myself to read any more Jordan. I've got a hardbound copy of Book 11 I bought around the time of its publication and I can't make myself care enough to get back up to speed on the plotline and all the tertiary characters. WoT is waaaay too long, and ultimately reads like a hybridization of David Eddings Belgariad and Mallorean with the Dragonlance Chronicles, Dune and The Dark is Rising. Plus the usual Tolkien retread material. But, really, the borrowing in WoT is sooo blatant (especially from Eddings, but plenty of others as well) that it makes my teeth hurt. Rand is Garion all over again. I could make lists that go on for pages. The characters, the races, the kingdoms and factions, the gods, the whole thing. More complicated and convoluted but alarmingly and disappointingly familiar as the series drags on.

For my money, George R.R. Martin's work is the best in this genre. He takes forever to release new books, so pace yourself, but I'd highly recommend his Song of Fire and Ice cycle. The first book is A Game of Thrones. He'll make you forget all about the Wheel of Time. Note: these are not books for kids, or for "young adults." Some of the characters are rather twisted and act accordingly. GRRM doesn't pull punches with violence, sexuality, or human vanity and frailty.

@Wonpie_ -- if you want more fantasy, I'd suggest Tolkien if you haven't read it (skip The Hobbit, or read it later, it's the least of them) or, if you have, Eddings or G.R.R. Martin (depending on your age: Eddings if you're on the younger side and/or want more Harry Potter-ish material; Martin if you're older or want something grittier and more literary.) You might also like Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea series a lot, having been a Potter fan. (Or the aforementioned The Dark is Rising series, although it is for younger readers.)

.. trying to find something new to read that has completely nothing to do with Twilight (my friends keep asking me to read it >_>).

Wow I've always loved that series (and the rest of his books - Peeps and the Uglies/Pretties series are great too). Really hope to see more of his works.
