13 Assassins - A gorgeous samurai film. The lighting and cinematography are some of the best I've seen in a Japanese film. I also like how Miike tried to capture the old school samurai film feel while incorporating some of his antics, such as the ridiculously intense action sequences.

Movie of the Week
Humanity and Paper Balloons
( Sadao Yamanaka, 1937 )

Oh God, what did you think of Norwegian Wood?

One of most disturbing movies on my "list". Yes ... and depressing.

Yeah, the movie was just one big depress fest really, which is such a shame as it could have been much more. Though the cinematography was nice. Have you read the novel?

My last films were two because I saw them on the same evening. So they were Shoguns samurai somewhat historical and Glass cape somewhat weird. But I liked them both a lot
Ultimately, there is a freedom to take the consequences (Terry Pratchett)

Aw, that's a shame. If you ever come across it though I definitely recommend you get it. It's one hell of a book.

That last films I watched were Kikujiro (which I watch every summer) and A History of Violence. Dragonball: Evolution is on tonight at 7:20pm so I'm going to give it a whirl and see if it's worse than The Last Airbender.

That's interesting. I think Dolls is one of my least favourite Kitano films, though the cinematography and score are absolutely beautiful. Maybe I just need to watch it again.

The last film I watched was Rise of the Planet of the Apes (again) and before that it was Adrift in Tokyo and Suicide Bus. The former of which I thought was an absolute masterpiece.

Suicide Bus! I remember watching half an hour of this film when I was about 14, and really enjoying it.

I have been trying to find the title of the picture for years, and now I finally found it. Thanks, dude!

Aha, no problem! I'd wanted to see it for ages and actually came across it while looking for a quick film to watch on YouTube. It's quite brilliant and surprisingly unpredictable as well. Let me know what you think when you watch it. (:

Will do! Meanwhile, I watched an amusing cult classic;

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)

Follows a nuclear physicist/gunfighter/brain surgeon/rock musician called Buckaroo Banzai and his crew "The Hong Kong Cavaliers" as they get involved in an insane intergalactic adventure.

Buckaroo Banzai is unique, quirky, and throws one into a strange, interesting universe where he/she has to figure things out on the fly. It tries to inject humor throughout (not always successfully), and has some funny details and Easter eggs. The sci-fi, while mostly mumbo-jumbo, does add a neat vibe of weirdness to the picture. But damn it, in the hands of a quality director this would have been GREAT, not decent. Ultimately, this was a wasted opportunity, and what a fucking opportunity it was.

69/100

It should also be mentioned that Buckaroo Banzai has not only one of the best trailers I have ever seen, but also one of the best ending sequences, too.

The tree of life - It was good. Very powerful visuals and such. However, I didn't like the way the different stories were connected, and the excess of planning at the aesthetic aspect made some images look cold and artificial.

All in all, it was enjoyable, but not the definitive reinvention of cinema or something like that. 7/10

April Story. A short film from Shunji Iwai. Simple, but absolutely lovely. Could have been rather average in another directors hands, but as usual, Shunji Iwai completely nails it with his delicate, subtle and always beautiful presentation. The man really is becoming one of my favourite directors. Takako Matsu was also brilliant. So glad I could finally see her in a role from her younger years. After this and Confessions I definitely want to check out her other work.

It's quite late here, so I'll just post the rating:

Everyone says I love you - 8/10
M - 8/10
Candy - 7.5/10
Ghost in the shell 2: Innocence - 9.5/10
Donnie Darko (rewatch) - 9/10 turned to 10/10
The big Lebowski (rewatch) - 10/10 although a little less impressed than the first time
Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny - 7/10
Earthlings (documentary) - 3/10
Stranger than paradise - 5/10
The passion of Joan of Arc - 10/10

Well, that's basically my experience with full-length movies in the last month. Hope I can watch things as regularly as I did before all this Erasmus shit.

13 Assassins (Takashi Miike)

I found it really disappointing considering all the hype it got. It was too rushed, had too many characters and while I'm no expert at cinematography I disliked how it was so damn dark during indoor scenes.

Definitely doesn't hold a candle to Seven Samurai as far as I'm concerned.

Glad you enjoyed Time Traveller, Seyrun. I think that's possibly the most underrated Japanese film I have ever seen.

Last films I watched were...

- Never Let Me Go
- Chalet Girl
- Kung Fu Panda 2
- Boy A

Kung Fu Panda 2 is still great a second time around and the former and latter are both absolutely superb. Andrew Garfield just has to be one of the best upcoming actors there is. Chalet Girl was okay for what it is. Wouldn't watch again. Not enough Bill Bailey.

Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid - Nothing special. Not only its comedy value is quite low nowadays, but the story itself turns quite repetitive once it is revealed to consist basically on these two guys getting pursued again and again. The Bolivia part improves a little but then it also falls in the boredom of routine. And the soundtrack may be mythical but its use in the story has actually a large room for improvement, so in the end it didn't work either.

But Newman and Redford are both great in their roles, transmtting their charisma to the already good performances, and in the end it's just the charm that the main characters arouse what saves the movie from being a worthless disaster. 6/10

I agree, I really don't understand why it recieved such a bad reception.
Also, Bill Bailey is a genius :)

Poetry - Quiet, but very moving. I think it's a film I will grow to appreciate more with each viewing.

I watched Tora! Tora! Tora! and Tropic Thunder twice, since I watched it again afterwards with commentary. Still can't make up my mind whether I actually like Robert Downey Jr. or not. Tora! Tora! Tora! was a pleasant surprise. I thought it would be really biased. Glad it wasn't. I still haven't seen Pearl Harbour, though from what I've heard I'm not missing out.
